UK Class 195 full kickdown to 100mph

- After many bodged attempts to get one of these accelerating to 100mph, I've reached the conclusion that the only place this is possible without any inhibitions is from Wigan North Western to Preston. Also have to have luck on your side with the driver "flooring" it and background noise on these busy trains.
The best place to hear the engine/transmission is the tip up seats in the vestibule.

Always loved trains with the ZF Gearbox
Great vid. These units get a lot of stick it seems but their performance can't be questioned

Very bumpy I can get over that I do like that personally gives the sensation of speed and that you are on the railway

In Argentina there are Materfer "Coche Motor" with Allison 6 speed
I love this. I got on 195 126 which held its second gear. Please do more of these :D
The irony is, these sound more like a bus than the pacers they've replaced!

This was my reaction when getting on the overground. I didn’t know all part of the lines were not electrified back then, if I was blind I would’ve assumed I got on a bus 😂

It is the same as the 172. They sound the same.
It's a rail version of a bus transmission- the ZF Ecolife.
These are cracking things when they get to speed. Was up that way last weekend and had one on the Furness line. Bit along the WCML between Lancaster and Carnforth really did show how good these are at near top speed, just a shame they don’t really see it with the work they do!

These classes are one of Britain's best commuter trains. you filmed a similar transmission type on the chiltern railway I do believe many years ago.. w/kickdown
They’re really not, class 172s and 185s put these to shame

Air con or filtering system if some kind . Perhaps for any warm electric component.
You can hear the motor /,gearbox whines of typical emus also in the mix

Believe me, the 170s and 158s are far more comfortable than 195s. The seats, noise level and ride quality are all very poor in the 195s. There's a reason it's joked within the rail industry that CAF stands for 'cheap as f***'.

Quist a decent sound from these newer trains. Try a get a ride on 150146. That thing is a beast when you have the right driver in the cab!
Nice vid, thanks. Would be great to see this along with an overlay of GPS speed to see what these units can really do. I've ridden one once and I don't have a high opinion of comfort or noise isolation.

It’s diesel-mechanical. The engine drives the gearbox which drives the transmission / wheels. Just like a bog-standard diesel bus

Maybe use a gps overlay with a map so time and speed can be seen. Another place is church Fenton going towards York.
I'm not gonna lie, it almost sounds like the class 4000s I have here in Northern Ireland
they’re both CAF trains as far as I know
I caught one on September 30th 2019 from Lancaster to Manchester Oxford Road and it got to Preston in like 16-17 minutes 🙂!
How long would a 156 take or another class
@@andybray9791 I believe the 156's were timed for around 20 minutes.

Wigan to Preston, 10 to 15mins, however Wigan to Manchester via bolton or Atherton line 40 mins.
However work has started on extending my local station ince in makerfieild, and electrification! However my house backs onto Springs Branch and noisy traffic in the night and horns can be a bit much.
Sadly electrification won’t go from Wigan to Kirkby or Southport

100% - same awful interior rattles that you get on the 172s too. Awful passenger experience!
Listen to the interior rattle about 20 seconds in!

@@willparton the ride quality of near life expired class 150, 155 and 156s is far smoother, on a 195, you can feel every bump and the clunk and jointing noises the carriage makes is very obxonious
In terms of seating the 195 is among the worst I’ve experienced, they’re not even comfortable for short journeys
The class 196s are far more refined in terms of ride quality, but I’d still say it was lacking. The seating is acceptable for the journeys they will do, but not much longer
