Right now I’m at Robert Downey Jr Ryan Gosling Mark Ruffalo Colman Domingo Willem DaFoe I still need to see American Fiction Melton and Sessa are good but not better than my top 5 and I didn’t see De Niro doing anything more special than the five guys I have being nominated. All of these above performances are great though.
A phenomenal year for best supporting actor. My personal five are Gosling, Downey, Howerton (BlackBerry), De Niro and Sessa but I’m predicting Gosling, Downey, Ruffalo, De Niro and Melton. A few others that deserve a shoutout are: John Magaro (Past Lives) Jason a Clarke (Oppenheimer) Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) Milo Manchado Graner (Anatomy of a Fall) Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers) Just a note, in five of the last six years they have had two nominees from the same movie in this category (Banshees with Gleeson and Keoghan, Power of the Dog with Plemons and Smit-McPhee, Judas and the Black Messiah with Kaluuya and Stanfield, Irishman with Pacino and Pesci and Three Billboards with Rockwell and Harrelson) which could lean me to predict Ruffalo and Dafoe in this category
I find Sterling K Brown sort of affective in that film. Jeffrey Wright is the one that grounds the film and helps make it as much of a compelling watch as it is.
My current GoldDerby predictions (as of 4.1.24): 5. Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon) 4. Charles Melton (May December) 3. Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things) 2. Ryan Gosling (Barbie) 1. Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) My 6 is Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction). Feeling pretty good about keeping this 5.
I saw Oppenheimer in advanced screening and immediately thought Robert Downey Jr is gonna win that Oscar, I completely agree with Perri, I’ve never seen Mark Ruffalo like that before, that also goes for Sterling K Brown being a Junkie 😂

I guess as long as all the big stars keep showing up, the GGs will remain relevant… it seems they just can’t get enough awards and basking in the glory of what a great bunch of people they think they are!! 🤷🏻♀️ To be fair , like the SAGs, it IS a moment for film and tv people to get together which makes for more excitement in the room, and it’s importance for many many decades now gives it a lot of heft too!!
Just giving a shout-out to my personal wishpick Milo Machado Graner for his killer performance in Anatomy of a Fall I truly hope he's gonna be an upsetting shocker nominee 🙏
The reason why I pick Robert Downey is that if he wins this year, then it’d be remarkable achievement for not just as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer but also for his entire journey of life that he had crossed through. That man faced a rock-bottom of life and now he is here, back to form. If he succeeds, then it’d be a great inspiration for people who’re seeking a “second chance” in their life to redeem themselves. Honestly, succeeding over drug life with sobriety isn’t easy at all. His wife is truly a gem. This award means more like honorary award for him and his career. And truly he has a long overdue, and I won’t say his performance was bad. It was incredible and people will never get to understand how Biopic works.
WAY TO GO JEFF!!! I thought I was alone in dropping Robert DeNiro out of the Top 5. My top 5 are exactly the same: Robert Downey Jr. , Ryan Gosling, Mark Ruffalo, Charles Melton & Sterling K. Brown. I think Robert DeNiro runs into the same problem as Leonardo DiCaprio does in Best Actor. Both actors have given better performances in the past; I don't see much passion for either performance. There is more passion surrounding other performances by potential first time nominees. I also think the focus of the acting for awards consideration for Killers Of The Flower Moon is solely on Lilly Gladstone's shoulders. Well done Jeff!!!
It's RDJ all the way. Agree with Perri about Margot in "Barbie" -- the work of a genuine artist, the film's soul and engine....and SHE won't win the Oscar either. With all due respect to Ruffalo, DeNiro, Brown, Gosling, and/or Dafoe, the threat here is actually Charles Melton, unless by some miracle Mescal or Bell get in for "Strangers." Sessa is the wild card. The ongoing debate about Lily Gladstone is irrelevant -- the very fact that we MISS her during that 30-plus minutes that she's not the center is proof of her Soul Of Film status, and her final scene clinches it, whereas DeNiro, as great as he is, plays Absolute Evil without the center of film that say, Bardem in "No Country for Old Men" had. As ever, you three are just so darned entertaining. Happy New Year's, Scott, Perri, and Jeff, and thank you for a fantastic 2023.
I would love to see an all-drunk FYC episode! 😂 For my predictions, not only will De Niro get in, but Dicaprio will get in as well. It is not going to be one or the other just because KOTFM is still standing strong. Maybe not a lot of wins, but this movie will get nominated in a lot of categories! I think RDJ has this sealed, the more he talks, the more his chances increases as well, he is only going to gain more momentum, and he is already at the top!
I want Dominic sessa to get in so bad he is one of the things about the holdovers that impressed me most I saw him and though oh this is a kid who has been stuck on some tv show for a while or something bc he is so good it’s impressive that this is his debut
I can see De Niro missing I want Charles Melton in so badly he deserves to be in the conversation. I think next episode they should revisit screenplay or predict animated feature. Thanks again for an amazing 2023 of FYC and can’t wait for 2024 :)
1. robert downey jr. (oppenheimer) - great performance, deserves the nomination, but i don't think is oscar winning worthy 2. ryan gosling (barbie) - absolute scene stealer, so funny, but the oscars usually don't fall in love for comedic performances 3. mark ruffalo (poor things) - such a good performance in one of the best movies of the year 4. robert deniro (killers of the flower moon) - also good, but he's overshadowed by lily gladstone and leo 5. charles melton (may december) - SHOULD WIN, one of the best performances of the year
Yeah most oscar movies don't start playing here till mid january and frankly usually all the way up through march. Kinda sucks! But can't do much about it haha.
The Golden Globes have changed and that was pretty damn evident this year with their varied picks across the board. The new GGs members led to more diverse and international nominees and due to the change in members and voting system, I think they are arguably more interesting/important precursor than usual. It's even crazy how MOST people prefer the noms from the GGs than Critics Choice this year. That says something imo.
I just don't see Bob de Niro getting nominated. His performance was mid. His accent kept changing. He looked like he didn't want to be in the movie. To hear him being preferenced over sterling k Brown or Colman Domingo is sad to me.
If you guys have a 'tie' in any category by number of nominations, I say you tally up the ranks and use golf rules to determine which is 'best'. So, take Actor A who is #5 for Perri, #4 for Scott and #4 for Jeff, the total 'score' for Actor A is 13. Actor B is also on all three of your lists, but is ranked #5 for Jeff, #4 for Scott and #3 for Perri, Actor B gets a score of 12. 12 is a lower 'score' so indicates an overall higher ranking than Actor A. If you guys have a person on honorable mention outside the top 5, you can still do the same. Actor C is #7 for Perri, but is #1 for Jeff and #2 for Scott for a total of 10 points making them superior to Actor A and B. edit: As a caveat, if you guys don't like the idea of someone not in your top 5 leapfrogging those within the top 5 (like in the case of Actor C over A and B) , you guys can just apply the above rule only when there are ties in nominations then just use the scoring system to see who comes out on top.
oh remember Oscars 2023... we are all expecting it was Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever or someone else like Kerry Condon for The Banshees Of Inisherin or Hong Chau for The Whale or Stephanie Hsu for Everything Everywhere All At Once and Jamie Lee Curtis won for the Oscars 2023 Best Supporting Actress for the film Everything Everywhere All At Once
@@pb.j.1753NEON is too late to launch a campaign for him now. Their biggest efforts are for original screenplay and best actress both of which aren't too difficult tbh. And it's not like Anatomy of a Fall is one of those typical small indie film, NEON has some money to spend if they really want to. I'm just disappointed at this point that they're so narrow-minded to only bang on two categories… maybe three including best picture
i don't think sterling is even top 6 let alone in over melton. rdj and gosling are "bet your life" level locks, with melton and ruffalo looking much more likely than not right now as well. which leaves the 5 slot between deniro or dafoe (i think deniro gets in)
Mantz is spot on. Glen Howerton is getting in. Especially after BlackBerry got the Obama endorsement. Ppl are talking about (and watching) that movie a lot more now. We’ll see really soon.
Easy to say in hindsight but Obama‘s film list (which I don’t even believe is authentic) means absolutely nothing. You need a strong campaign by the US distributor to get any Oscar noms and Blackberry was released by IFC who don’t really invest in campaigning. The last nominations they scored is literally a whole decade ago with Boyhood.
Gosling getting this much buzz for that terrible performance is baffling. We all know that actual good performances like sterling will be off the academy’s list while they honor gosling for playing a bimbo.
Charles Melton could actually win the Oscar. Unlike Melton, the other 4 contenders you've chosen all play viilains, cads and nemeses. In the past few years, the academy has favored awarding noble, sympathetic 'good guy' performaness in this category. Plus, the academy is also more mindful of acknowledging diversity in its supporting categories, so a nomination or win for Melton would not cause any complaints. I do think the award is Downey's to lose, though I'm personally rooting for Ruffalo- and Dafoe, for that matter. But I think Melton's nomination is a lock, even more than DeNiro and Gosling. .. .
I don't understand the praise for RDJ in Oppenheimer. Nothing in this role shouts Oscar to me, it's not very demanding, difficult or spectacular. I feel the same about De Niro's role in KOTFM. For me neither of the two performances deserves an Oscar. What helps them is that both actors are acting heavyweights and Hollywood may feel the pressure to award them.
To me he looks ready to win an emmy next year in the sympathiser I don't really see the quality to win an oscar from him, personally I think there were many other actors who could have came into his role and given a comparable performance imo.
Barbie was a good movie but giving any actor and oscar for this film is mind boggling to me. There are some performances this year that floored me (i.e. danielle brooks or carey mulligan whew) but barbie was good as a whole but to compare the acting by charles melton against gosling feels unbalanced. Maybe i need to watch barbie again. But thats the thing… i feel once was enough. Idk. Love them all tho
Charles Melton - I was surprised he wasn’t mentioned last time. That Gotham Award was big for him. I personally didn’t like May December but the only person I felt for was him in a film that looked like an 80s tv movie.
Similar feelings, although i am not *as* hot on him as some he def deserves a nom (but i"m also weird where I don't really get what people are seeing in downey's performance other than "it's his time", he looks way more interesting in the sympathiser honestly)
my Oscars 2024 Best Supporting Actor holiday edition predictions my top 5 Ryan Gosling - Barbie Charles Melton - May December Dominic Sessa - The Holdovers Robert De Niro - Killers Of The Flower Moon Robert Downey Jr. - Oppenheimer next-in-line: Mark Ruffalo - Poor Things Glenn Howerton - BlackBerry Sterling K. Brown - American Fiction Willem Dafoe - Poor Things Jacob Elordi - Priscilla
Gosling is a phenomenon actor, truley a great talent. But can we stop acting like hos performance in Barbie is oscar worthy, like cmon ITS THE OSCARS , oscars means all time great. Did gosling really give a generation performances and all time great acting job? I mean let's get real and sperate ghe succes of the movie from the fun energetic funny performance, like the pure acting job of some others this year is just stronger based off what they had to act as..... gosling a beast of course, but there's a big gap from a great performance and oscar worthy performance... ITS THE OSCARS THE BAR IS ALL TIME HIGH!!!!
I think Downey, Gosling, Melton, and Ruffalo are locked in. Pretty sure De Niro is the 5th, but I wouldn't be shocked if he got bumped for Sessa. I don't think Sterling K. Brown will get in.
My predictions for Oscar awards for best animated feature film is teenage mutant ninja turtles mutant mayhem paw patrol the mighty movie elementals wish trolls band together
@@Aussie27Legend and I’m really upset that Halley Bailey is not gonna be nominated for the Oscar’s same thing for best original song for Lin Manuel Miranda to become a egot
Yeah after seeing all the films I feel like he does not have a performance that would get a win and also doesn't have that strong of a narrative. I don't see it at all.
so Barbie might get the Oscars wins along with Ryan Gosling might be winning the Oscars Best Supporting Actor the Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Original Song & Supporting Actor might win
1. Charles Melton (May December) 2. Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) 3. Ryan Gosling (Barbie) 4. Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction) 5. Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon)
Melton feels like a lock at this point. Even though Sterling K Brown should get in I can absolutely see the Academy snubbing him for De Niro or Dafoe. I would be less mad about Dafoe and even ok with Dominque Sessa getting in over Brown versus De Niro.
so it's not farfetch to Ryan Gosling winning the Oscars 2024 Best Supporting Actor.. Barbie gives more momentum and buzz than Oppenheimer.. and Ryan Gosling's Ken is more popular for the audiences.. Ryan Gosling's Ken is now a pop icon for the modern era

But I think Melton's nomination is a lock, even more than DeNiro and Gosling. .. .
Robert De Niro is getting in guys
I don't understand the praise for RDJ in Oppenheimer. Nothing in this role shouts Oscar to me, it's not very demanding, difficult or spectacular. I feel the same about De Niro's role in KOTFM. For me neither of the two performances deserves an Oscar. What helps them is that both actors are acting heavyweights and Hollywood may feel the pressure to award them.
That’s how I feel about many performances that have won an Oscar lol
To me he looks ready to win an emmy next year in the sympathiser I don't really see the quality to win an oscar from him, personally I think there were many other actors who could have came into his role and given a comparable performance imo.
When can we expect your final picks?❤
Barbie was a good movie but giving any actor and oscar for this film is mind boggling to me. There are some performances this year that floored me (i.e. danielle brooks or carey mulligan whew) but barbie was good as a whole but to compare the acting by charles melton against gosling feels unbalanced. Maybe i need to watch barbie again. But thats the thing… i feel once was enough. Idk. Love them all tho
I feel the same way. Like Barbie ? Really? It was an average movie with decent performances but not Oscar worthy.
The gang better not snub Dennis.
Brown, DeNiro, Melton, Downey, are all in Gosling is out ….
The ever influential Gotham Awards 🤡
Then do a GG noms reaction!
jeff, i like you
This is the correct list. I’m certain. Mantz I love you buddy, but you gotta let go of Glenn Howerton. As great as he may be, it just ain’t happenin.
giametti is a def no...moore & portman out - supporting - Downey, Melton, Deniro, Ruffalo & Gosling
my Oscars 2024 Best Supporting Actor holiday edition predictions
my top 5
Ryan Gosling - Barbie
Charles Melton - May December
Dominic Sessa - The Holdovers
Robert De Niro - Killers Of The Flower Moon
Robert Downey Jr. - Oppenheimer
next-in-line:
Mark Ruffalo - Poor Things
Glenn Howerton - BlackBerry
Sterling K. Brown - American Fiction
Willem Dafoe - Poor Things
Jacob Elordi - Priscilla
Melton!
I would like to see Joaquim De Almeida get nominated for Missing
That's a wild pick! He was good, mind you.
Mantz thinking Saltburn has more fully realized characters than Poor Things is crazy lol
My predictions for Oscar awards for best animated feature film is teenage mutant ninja turtles mutant mayhem paw patrol the mighty movie elementals wish trolls band together
in no universe do spiderverse AND boy and the heron not get nominated
@@Aussie27Legend and I’m really upset that Halley Bailey is not gonna be nominated for the Oscar’s same thing for best original song for Lin Manuel Miranda to become a egot
@@TheNintendoPeep i think that is a shame too honestly
I would choose DeNiro, Brown & Melton out if it were me
deniro
I find it super hard to believe the Academy will give RDJ an Oscar.
Yeah after seeing all the films I feel like he does not have a performance that would get a win and also doesn't have that strong of a narrative. I don't see it at all.
Same with gosling
Take deniro off
so Barbie might get the Oscars wins along with Ryan Gosling might be winning the Oscars Best Supporting Actor
the Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Original Song & Supporting Actor might win
I'm going with Charles Melton.
I see Melton getting in and having a good chance to win. The Netflix campaign plus I hear alot of ppl talking about May December now
Are those people actual Oscar voters or your friends from high school
Melton has momentum, he'll get in. De Niro is not going to be passed over for Sterling K. Brown. Brown is the one that's going to be left out.
Scott needs a break.
Charles Melton Duh
1. Charles Melton (May December)
2. Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer)
3. Ryan Gosling (Barbie)
4. Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction)
5. Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon)
Gladstone has more screen time than DeNiro. Leo has, by far, the most. But Gladstone is second. Someone on twitter timed it.
Melton please.
Charles melton
