This song was introduced in the 1934 Broadway show Hi Diddle Diddle and was an immediate hit, it's been recorded by many artists since. Just one note, though her name is spelled in a variation of the name Betty she was named and has always been called Bet. Her mother named her after classic film actress Bette Davis, who did pronounce her name as Betty but it was a common habit amongst her fans at the time to refer to her as Bet Davis leading to Midler's mother's confusion. Mrs. Midler was a rabid movie fan-Bette's sisters were named after 40's stars Judy Garland and Susan Hayward!
