In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Expulsion of Indians from Uganda in 1972. Idi Amin after a coup in 1971, became the president of Uganda. Immediately after getting power, Idi amin started a tirade on Indophobic rhetoric. In August 1972, Idi Amin, ordered the expulsion of his country's Asian minority, giving them 90 days to leave the country. Indians reached Uganda in 1892 when British east india Company recruited workers from the Punjab Province to work in construction of a railway line in Uganda. In time Indians became the most prosperous society in Uganda. Which led to resentment among local population. Amin later went to do mass murders and attacked the neighbouring country Tanzania. Adi Amin though Barbaric was right in a way...The indian traders exploited the native Ugandans very similarly to what British did in India..however when the Shahs,Patels and marwadis were told to leave 85% of them chose to go to North America and UK than return back to India,, when studying in England i came across 2nd generation Ugandan Indians most of whom are settled in Leicester and Native Black Ugandans who were in my University who actually told me the real thing which happened in Uganda.
All in all you are indirectly supporting the repression on one community just because of some other reason. No matter how much exploitation happened, it never justifies the violence and transgression against others.
