In the end, they get hailed as heroes. Also, despite Google Translate being the best automated translation there is and being really good at it, every character in a story needs their own way of speaking, which gets lost through GT. It's also not difficult to hire someone to translate your dialogue more naturally or to get an accent coach.
i would pay so much if foreigners made such movies based on US and european cities.

I'm an actual Mexican person who's tired of most popular media depicting mexico focusing on the drug cartels and crime, while doing it in a way that can't even be respectful or mindful of the victims, like I actually do know ppl irl whose family members or friends have gone missing or had their lives ruined by criminals, and here we have a film where the family member of a missing person kisses the hand of a drug lord, who btw never faces consequences nor is held accountable for any of their past crimes and basically dies a martyr 🤮. Im pissed that a foreign director said "he knew all he needed to know about Mexico" so he didn't do research and this is just full of stereotypes and unauthentic bs, while also having a casting director saying they couldn't find any talent good enough in all of mx or latin america, like they're just racist.
Not to mention the movie is boring, no one sings particularly well, the editing has tons of small continuity errors, the spanish sounds like Google translate, the musical numbers don't give us sufficient character insight nor move the plot along, tons of telling rather than showing moments, several kind of important characters we don't really get to know... Not even getting into the awful way transness was handled
As someone who wants to learn Mexican Spanish, I legit thought "Maybe if it's too bad I can still count it as a listening experience" but nope 😂 it doesn't even pass that
The same way that "I saw the TV glow" is a much better trans narrative made by trans people, "I'm still here" is a much better latin-american movie made by actually latin-american people. It should absolutely get the best international movie instead, but if anything, I just hope more people see it now that it got both the best international movie and the best movie nominations.
I do believe this Spanish woman deserves best actress.

The makeup... i HATED that they made her 10 shades darker pre transition, while she's a white european woman, and pre transition she was Still white and blonde, just google her on Nosotros los Nobles, she's white and was always white, and as Manitas they made her the same shade as Zoe Saldaña

So... As a native spanish speaker I don't agree with the performances being good at all... I know it's more so the script but between the script, the accents and the bad awful pronunciation it's .. boy... specially Selena Gomez, she sounds like she's drunk all the time. Also the anger towards this movie is also because the director said directly that he didn't do any research on the topic or mexico cuz "he knew all he needed to know", and the cast director said she look all throughout mexico and latin america and she "couldn't find anyone talented enough" which woof

You can't understand what she says at all, she mispronounces everything and the script makes her say/sing a bunch of things that as a Spanish speaker make you go "no one in the history of the universe has ever strung those words together like that"

While I agree that it's a step forward to have a trans woman play her character pre-transition using make-up, the critiques I've seen of this movie haven't addressed that the make-up also darkens her skin tone. It seemed to me like they were trying to make this Spanish actress look more indigenous in her scenes as a criminal, and while I think a much better movie could have talked about white beauty standards and how that affects transitioning, it still wouldn't have changed the fact that this was a Spanish woman being made to look non-white in order to play a drug lord. Add that to the pile of reasons to throw this movie in the garbage.
It’s kind of hard to tell and I was wondering about that but the thing is she’s heavily shadowed in every scene she has pre-transition so I wasn’t confident that they’d actually darkened her skin vs. it was just a side effect of the lighting.
Emilia Perez gets the 2024 GreenBook award of movie pretending to be pro-diverstity but its actually offensive, that gets all white folks feeling good about representation.
More accurate is it gets the "Crash" 2004 (I believe is the year) treatment. Green Book was tone-deaf but mostly harmless. It at least works as a movie, and while tone deaf it isn't outright offensive, at least not to the degree of Perez or Crash. Crash is not good as a movie, it's politics go against what it wants to say, and massively overshadowed a litany of far better movies that deserved the critical attention (famously beating Brokeback Mountain).

The director has actually bragged about his lack of research because "I already knew everything I needed to." He seems to be a real piece of work; it was originally gonna film much more in Mexico, but real Mexico didn't match his unresearched mental images, so off to a Paris soundstage it was. I've been reading/listening to a lot of stuff from not just Mexicans but all kinds of Latin Americans, because boy there's been a unifying wave of this thing pissing people off.

I get the Latino outrage, but I'm not personally offended. I just mourn the two hours and 18€ I will never get back. Took my teen to see it, which is unfortunate as I lost some valuable filmcred there.
In my experience (I work in the business) it is high time for the CNC to forbid French directors from writing their own scripts, especially once they've reached high enough Cannes-darlingship to have a vanity project greenlit.
I love some other Audiard films, but this one is a big disappointment and, frankly, an embarrassment for the French film industry - though its fans will never know that ;)

Imagine a terrible movie musical made by Russians, with French and German actors speaking bad English, filmed in China, about US American school shooters being redeemed.
That's what this movie feels like for Latin Americans.
I knew the movie was going to be bad the second that Emilia (who at the time, had not transitioned) kidnaps Rita and takes her out to the desert. On the surface, that’s not a big deal. It’s par for the course for drug dealers. However, the movie is established as taking place in Mexico City. Mexico City is a city, there’s no desert. The desert is on the border, not the city. So either one of three things happened. Either Emilia teleported, hauled major ass for about a day and a half to five days to get to the desert, or it’s just bad writing. I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s bad writing. As a Mexican American, this movie was an insult and a slap to the face.

So I listened to a podcast interview with Zoe Saldaña and she confirmed that Jacques Audiard does not speak English nor Spanish. They had interpreters all throughout the set and the making of this movie which sounds like a logistical nightmare and it makes everything make so much sense. I have to disagree in that I think Selena Gomez is REALLY bad in this movie. I don't speak Spanish well but she sounds like a student who had wisdom tooth surgery in a Spanish 1 class. But knowing that Audiard does not speak the language made that fact make so much more sense because how was he supposed to know she was sucking? My friend and I joked that everything was lost in translation with this movie and it only gets worse in my mind.
Man, remember when multilingual continental European movies were good? I'm thinking of course of the WWII themed "The Wages of Fear".

Another video I watched pointed out that Selena’s cadence is also really off and once they mentioned that and showed a clip it became very obvious. Even to me as a non-Spanish speaker it clued me in to just how stiff and unnatural it sounded without even being able to understand the language. It’s like someone who’s written out the phonetic pronunciations for a debate in a language class they have and instead of giving an impassioned speech they’re just monotonously reading it out.
Kind of ironic that the show (Squid Game) with a cis man playing a trans woman is more respectful in character and overall story than a movie (Emilia Perez) with a trans woman actress.
Fun fact: A bunch of Mexican people made a parody movie about a trans French woman and it was filmed in Mexico with a large number of prop rats. I think it's on TH-cam and I want to watch it. It's basically mocking the behind the scenes issues with this movie.
There should be no shame in disliking a movie that bigots also dislike. There can be a lot of different reasons to dislike a movie.

As a cis guy, videos like yours are very educational when writing trans people.
Hi, composer here. Those filler songs have a technical name. So in opera, you have arias/duets/trios, which mostly convey the emotional state of the characters or reactions to events. Choruses, too, to a lesser extent. Between all that is something called recitative, or recit, which is loose, very speech-like musical material that is used to convey plot information. Some Broadway musicals emulate that by having some of the songs take on that loose, recit quality. Sweeny Todd is actually a lot closer to an operetta than a traditional Broadway musical for that reason. Phantom too to about the same extent.
I recommend watching channel called Sideways. He has a few videos discussing this and explaining how musicals work. he has a really good one about cats and explaining how that show in particular works that I think you would find fascinating.

Sideways is amazing. Sadly I heard that he has practically left TH-cam because so many people pirated his videos. If this is true, it’s a loss, as his in depth explanation’s of musicals was fascinating to musical illeterates like me.

Yes, its true that 80% of Mexico is brown but if the director had investigated a little more he would realize that most of them (narc()s) are lighter skinned, because the mayority comes from states who have paler skin or because their mothers are beaty queen (Whose characteristics are having lighter skin and being taller).
Also she is xenophobic with the mexican, she said and quote "I want to thank all of Mexico and Mexicans. I know perfectly well that all this unjustified hatred does not come from you, it is simply a four GATOS with many and varied interests involved"
Gatos is the way rich people call people who they believe are inferior. So if we don't like the movie, we are inferior.
And that just part of what I think is wrong with her character.
Don't get me started on how they take the issue of disappearances with the utmost disrespect and give Zoe and Karla's character a white savior form, that Emilia's only motivation to "help" is to feel better about herself.

Gonna be cliche: As a cis woman, I'd love to see more trans stories in movies.
Show me a trans woman who breaks up with her wife/gf and they build a whole new life together as friends, as she explores her new life, meets a wonderful (cis straight) man, and everyone's happy. An empowering story of love and success. Because it's real. Because I know those 3 people.
Honestly, for many trans people, choosing to stay married or live your truth and transition is just our life. It was certainly my story.
You know the trans story I wasn't to see? A wallflowery trans woman meets a far more extroverted/outgoing trans woman, she hits it off with her, and in the process realizes that contrary to what she previously thought she's indeed capable of being loved, recovering from her past, and actually enjoying being trans. Maybe include flashbacks to the main character's pre-transition life at key points.
I know this thing happens in real life. It's literally the story of my girlfriend and me.
I found the series Transparent quite good.

Aaaanyway, to this random cracker, EP is decanting as a shallow, cliché, pretentious flick with too little plot (lazy) and way too much money on its hands, featuring two-dimensional characters that made me feel nothing but boredom. Oh yeah, and cringe.
Faintly reminds me of how I felt after Lars Von Trier's awful Dancing In The Dark (which takes place in the US - where he'd never even been, was the word on the Croisette).
If you love musicals, I recommend vintage Baz Luhrmann. I'm NOT a lover of musicals (except for a few classics #thesoundofmusic ;) but flicks like Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge and the wonderful Strictly Ballroom, really took me by surprise and have stayed with me for years. I saw EP last night and am already trying to forget it.
May I suggest as counterprogramming, a Chilean film called a fantastic woman which actually won the Oscar for best international feature, back what it used to be called best foreign language film in 2018. Now there’s a project about a transgender woman that is actually made by Latin American filmmakers, in this case, Chilean. An interesting fact is that the actress who played the central character was originally just a consult to make sure the character was portrayed accurately, but ended up being cast to play the character herself.

This movie reminds me of “The Help”. The subject of the film is not the perspective character. I turned off the Help after 15 minutes when I realized the white girl was the perspective character. I found it annoying Rita the lawyer was perspective character in a film about Emilia.

The trailer of that movie made me want to barf. I ended up seeing "The Secret Life of Bees" which is set in the South during the same time period and shows a Black family's point of view. It's mostly a quirky movie about coming of age with the politics of the time leaking in through the edges. It came out a few years earlier & stars Jennifer Hudson.
This is a tangent from Emilia Perez, but: The Help is actually a really interesting case to me, because I saw the movie first and did enjoy it at the time, but then I read the book and feel like I have more memory of the book and its structure that's coloring my recollection of the movie. That is to say, I think it probably was a failure of adaptation that it came across as so much Skeeter being the perspective character, since in the book very clearly and evenly divides the perspectives by chapter between Aibileen, Skeeter, and Minny. And within that structure I always considered Aibileen to be very much the main character as her chapters both start and end the story and it feels like she's more of a catalyst for the plot than Skeeter. In the book, Skeeter is A key player, but we absolutely see Aibileen's story from Aibileen's own point of view, and I think there are more deliberate moments of Skeeter overstepping and having to learn to step back and let Ailbileen, Minny, and the other maids tell their own stories.
That said, it's been a while even since I read the book, and also I'm white, so I'm curious to seek out some perspectives/reviews from black people who've read the book as well! I do believe the book does a better job of not centering Skeeter, but I'm also not the best one to be the judge of that. Your comment just helped me pin down that that's probably why I've always had a bit of an urge to defend The Help, since the split perspective structure is such an integral part of the book and I've got that in my memory probably more so than the reality of how it was adapted for the movie.

Honestly, most of the voting was done before trans/Mexican folks started really pushing back at why they find this movie offensive. Not only does Hollywood like to pat themselves on the back, they also hate controversy about discrimination. Now that the objections are getting louder, I'd be surprised if there were any wins for the movie.

@CouncilofGeeks true but I will hold on to a little bit of hope here because (1) the academy has gotten a lot more voters in these past few years, particularly more international ones, (2) there's still a month for the backlash on the nominations to settle in, (3) Emilia Perez is competing against Brazil's "I'm still here" in 3 of the big categories, most people are only seeing it now as it went onto wide release yesterday and it might just be enough to, if not take the wins, to split the vote and give it to a third movie. Also, the academy does not like to give awards to Netflix movies, they usually get a lot of noms due to the strong lobbying but walk away with very little: the power of the dog got 12 nominations and only won 1 in 2022
@@republicacoes Important Mexican directors such as Guillermo Del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón are also championing I'm Still Here as one of their favorites of the year. It's very likely that a good part of the Latin American Academy members voted for its and Fernanda Torres' nominations and will bear an importance on the final vote too. If that's enough to beat EP, I don't know though.

But despite all of Brazil's cheering (I mean, oscar night will be on carnaval Sunday, it'd be perfect for us to win), I'm not even hoping for best picture, I hope best picture nomination gets us in a better position for the other two nominations and that, in best picture we manage to split the vote and not win, but keep Emilia Perez from winning.

Nimona winning would've been so perfect after Disney tried to kill it. Unfortunately the academy loves not giving the award to who it should have gone to, realizing it later and the next time they get nominated, they immediately get it as an apology. Miyazaki won that year because he should've won years earlier. What makes me really mad is that if they give it to Emilia Perez, they might feel like they've made it up for Nimona which would absolutely not be enough. If anything, they need to make up when N.D. Stevenson writes their next project or Annapurna makes a new movie, because at least it would be the people who produced nimona instead of a random French guy who wasn't even willing to do the research about Mexico because he already "knew all there was to know".
The tricky thing is that that year had so many amazing animated films, all of them deserved it in a way. Like, Nimona was a beautiful queen story based on one of my favorite graphic novels, Spiderverse changed the future of CGI animation AGAIN, and The Boy and the Heron was gorgeous.
I was so happy “I’m Still Here” came up in a surge. There’s a minor chance it dethrowns Emilia Perez. People need to rally around this movie (because it’s actually very close to be one of the best of the year). If enough Americans watch it, it’ll make it a race versus Emilia Pérez. All you need is watch it. I’m pretty sure considering how powerful it is, it’ll pull through.
Also it is a better message against Trump.
If I’m Still Here pulls an upset in International Film Feature, it considerably diminshes the chances of Emilia Perez in Best Picture as both are nominated.

Just because it has the most nominations doesn’t automatically guarantee a Best Picture win (look at Netflix’s The Power of the Dog).

What you're talking about with the filler songs is based on operatic tradition. The musicals you named, Les Mis, Sweeney Todd, Phantom of the Opera, those are all essentially operas in their style, so almost all the dialogue is sung. It's called recitative (pronounced Italian, like many Western music terms), because the music follows more of a general speaking pattern as the performers "recite" their way through to get to the arias (the big showy songs). Just in case anyone was wondering if there was a term for this. (Also, filler music where no one sings at all, it's just orchestration, is called "interstitial music")
The problem is that white critics online are the most vocal, so the movie supporters can ignore the criticisms as anti-woke trite. We need more people like you, Kayla Says, so that at least we can try and make older liberals NOT put a horrid representation in film as the pedestal to aspire to.

"Under the Sea" is both a philosophy song (giving a character's point of view, in this case Sebastian rebutting Ariel's assertion that the surface is a good place to be) and a charm song (pure entertainment to break up tension and delight the audience).
Yep, it shows Sebastians and by default Tritons argument and perspective, which just highlights more how much she is breaking with expectations. And how, yeah Sebastian and Triton are legit worries and not just bad parents. He is by being not talking and dealing with the mom stuff a bit, but he is sympathic.
i wish i could hold a positive opinion over Karla Sofía Gascón but she is a Spaniard playing the character of a Mexican and that alone makes me have some thoughts (go back to the extremely problematic history of colonialism between Spain and México) and then she has the nerve to call the very same Mexicans she is "representing" a bunch of "ignorant" and "uneducated" people (she called the ones who liked the film "the good Mexicans" and the bad ones "gatos" which is a derrogatory name in México) only because with good reason we have a lot of issues with the representation of México and the very sensitive topics that affects the country until this very day.

The pre-transition makeup was very good but this year I think the Oscar should go to the Substance. Not o ly the ugly parts are incredible but the pretty parts were also achieved using makeup, camera tricks and prothestics (The actress who played young Demi Moore doesn't look like that. 1 small fact check. Having gotten a vasectomy is still safer than just hrt hormones. HRT is not birth control. And I know they fear monger about fertility, but that’s often not even true. I know too many accidental pregnancy stories because they thought just estrogen hrt and blocker was enough contraception.
The same goes for trans men being on testosterone is not contraception!

@ that’s just another problem on top, that some doctors think contraception works as estrogen hrt, which it doesn’t even do with blockers, because it’s different estrogen in there and way too low doses.
But you can also be on testosterone blockers and actual estrogen hrt (not just contraception pills) for years and still get someone pregnant if the rest of the equipment is intact. I have seen it happen in my friend group.

Although you mentioned that the movie was oscar bait cus of the trans thing, I think more oscar bait cus of the fact it was set in mexico. If it was just a trans film set in america I doubt they would of nominated it. But since barely any non english films get nominated and mexican/south american films often get zero respect from award shows they wanted to pretend like they suddenly started caring about "foreign" films to pretend they aren't racist as well as transphobic.
If that's all they want, to give an award for a non-English speaking movie from Latin America, "I'm still here" should be the one. It is a Brazilian movie, made by Brazilian people, with Brazilian actors, and it is about something that really happened during the Brazilian dictatorship. And now its message is more prescient than ever, with the rise of the far-right and all... So if all the academy wants is go give some awards to pander to a different group of people for inclusivity points, "I'm still here" should be the one with the tons of nominations, but they only got 3 (even though one of them is for best picture and another for best actress), but we all know that the french movie about Latin America would get more nominations and awards than the Latin American movie about Latin America, because the academy will only go so far for "inclusion", and asking them to give more appraisal for real authentic depictions of "non-white countries" is just too far for them 🙄

And the effect is compounding, the trans factor of it being oscar bait builds on top of the oscar bait of it being set in Mexico, and from that perspective it is a feature not a bug that it has a french director, because the US would much rather give an award to Europeans than Latinamericans. It coming from a perspective that's extremely close to the one they already have but just different enough that than can feel like they're cosmopolitan and expanding their world view make the old white cis straight, and lest be honest, mostly male portion of Oscar voters feel really good about themselves while never having to actually leave their position of comfort. And because of that, they get really defensive as well, because they will absolutely defer any criticism to coming from bigoted people and therefore not even warranting consideration.

As a Brazilian, when this thing won against "Im Still Here" for "Best International Film" at the Golden Globes, I saw my hopes on these awards completely vanish. I speak Portuguese but I could really tell how awful Selena Gomes's Spanish sounded, and she would suddenly speak American English for no reason with zero accent. Like what, is she even Mexican? I know the actress is not, so what is up with this character? I also follow a lot of queer youtubers, and boy I'm a cis woman and even I could tell how problematic that depiction of a trans person was. This movie managed to offend trans people, Mexicans (and latin people), musicals...And is still nominated for 13 Academy Awards. Dune part 2 is nominated for 5! Make it make sense!

The most frustrating thing about those noms is that 2024 was a pretty good year for movies. A Real Pain, Nosferatu, A Different Man, The Apprentice, The Wild Robot, The Seed of the Sacred Fig are all good to great movies who deserve the best picture nomination more than Emilia Pérez - and mind you, I'm only naming the movies who were nominated for anything else. Emilia Pérez is one of the only dark spots in a great year in my opinion and it's sad that it gets all the attention. At least Green Book was somewhat of a competently made movie...
I saw Flow and I Saw The TV Glow this year, and am dying to see The Substance. Not seeing any of those legitimate masterpieces show up on the nominations list is heartbreaking.
I haven’t seen the movie but I was paying attention to its nominations. What stuck out to me were the Golden Globe-nominated (and apparently Oscar-nominated) songs. Mi Camino? El Mal? My Road and The Bad? These simple-ass titles felt like they were an indication of how little they understood, maybe not of the language (because of how similar French and Spanish can be in areas) but at the very least the people. If not that, to keep it so dumbed down for its international audience so they could understand it. Should I have looked into it more to confirm my suspicions? Is the suspected lack of understanding a microcosm of the broader issues with how they handled trans people? Maybe, but the alarm bells still rang.

The cultural appropriation is terrible and has us in Mexico very mad, but it’s just such a bad film that you can pick the musical numbers, the ridiculous story, and so far.
As a Honduran it really offended me to, let me explain, Honduras has become a Narco state since the early 2000s, due the fact of its location that works as a "bridge" for cartels to transport drugs from south America, to Mexico and the US. The former president (Juan Orlando Hernández) an his brother are now in jail in NYC for drug traficking. Many doesn't understand how horrible is to live in a place controlled by drug cartels 😢, that's why im fully on the side of my mexican bothers to be mad against this movie, I know what they suffer, el narco isn't something you can joke about or take it so easily, there are several people that drug cartels have made them live horrors beyond imaginable, really I pray for the families of the víctims of this kind of organizations and I hope movies like this to stop being made.
Now if only I Saw The TV Glow was nominated…

@jukesy1992 I know that international movies have to be the submitted choice of the country in question, but that only applies to that category in specific. Last year, a french movie was nominated for best picture but not international because of this rule. In the case of I saw the TV glow, however, it's probably because it didn't even campaign. Running a campaign is very expensive, so the studios choose which of their movies they are willing to spend their marketing money on, and the executives probably decided that it wasn't gonna get nominated anyway so they didn't even tried. Even "I'm still here", which has a lot of Sony's money beside it, probably only got in because the director is footing part of the campaign bill (he is the heir to the fortune of one of Brazil's largest banks)
The thing that surprised me most about the list of Best Picture nominees was that Dune: Part Two was on there. Not because I don't think it deserves to be nominated, but because I can't believe that it came out after the last Academy Awards. Feels like a lifetime ago since it came out.

Even those of us who WANT surgery mostly can't afford it because we aren't cartel kingpins and in most countries gender affirming surgery is classed as purely cosmetic so you pay the entire thing yourself - even with "universal health care".
I saw the tv glow was an incredible movie. Im not a trans or gay person but I found it extremely moving. Its also terrifying. And well acted. This other film is just kindof nothing. A bobble. Something that causes harm to the very people it claims to protect.
Hi. I know this is completely irrelevant to the points of your review, but as a cartoonist and occasional comics artist I have to comment on the use of boldface in comics text. I've seen more comments recently by folks who are befuddled by what seems to be the random use of having boldface in dialogue and captioning. It's a convention that's fallen out of favor in modern comics and maybe that contributes to the confusion about it. It's meant to convey emphasis, especially in spoken dialogue. Because there is no sound in comics, boldface used to be a way to capture the rhythm and cadences of spoken dialogue, a way to approximate the speech of someone as if we could actually hear it. In a sense the writer is acting out the dialogue for the reader as if we were watching a film and hearing the character speak.
Granted, some writers are better at it than others. Frank Miller, for instance, tries to capture the sound of film noir dialogue and hardboiled detective fiction narration *as he hears it in his own head*. Whether he's successful at it I'll leave to others to decide, but that is the intent. There is a reason behind it. Comics fans for generations have made fun of Jack Kirby's use of boldface...let's just say he does not have an ear for the rhythms of naturalistic dialogue. However, even he is using the convention with intent, as he is often trying to convey heightened, very stylized dialogue to create grand drama or spectacle, albeit in a "I was born during the Great Depression and never received a formal education" kind of way.
I don't know how old you are or how familiar you are with older comics, so forgive me if you already know this stuff. But i did want to explain to those who aren't familiar with a style that has pretty much dropped out of use in modern comics what it was meant to convey. Thanks for letting me ramble about this, and now i know not to watch Emilia Pérez!
Oh I know the reason for doing it, but have you tried actually reading Miller’s dialogue out loud putting emphasis where he places it? Especially in the last 20 years? It doesn’t sound noir, it sounds alien.
as someone that dabbles in writing, if I am writing just a female character, I have said character ran through a couple female friends to make sure I am not doing a bad job, if it comes to other depictions I so have a someone from that community look it over.
This is something I’m gonna do when writing my next manuscript. I only didn’t for my first because the characters are, well… mostly non-anthropomorphized dinosaurs.

So, I disagree about Disney musicals. "Be Our Guest" is a fun (allegedly) filler piece that only exists to introduce the mansion as a character. It's not like the other famous songs from the movie that exist to tell you everything about the bipedal characters.
However, "Under the Sea" is different. It exists to present the stakes to Ariel for the course she is going to take in her life. Like Achilles in the Iliad, Ariel must choose between a long life with her loved ones at home or to sacrifice her life for the glory of becoming human. In the song, Sebastian is trying to persuade her to give up her obsession with the other world and accept and be grateful for all the blessings of her life at home. All of the lyrics are about how the grass isn't greener, home is better, we love you, and you love us and will miss us if you leave. This song, and the sea witch, are probably the most true to the original fable, although visually not so much. I think you may be thinking of the visuals which were used as a showcase for Disney's new digital colors. But that's not the song.

I don’t care for musicals, but I did recognize this was an especially bad musical. This video really made me reevaluate how I looked at musicals. I especially found it informative how and why songs exist within films. Just something I never considered before.
I'm cis, but I suspect a major reason a lot of cis people focus on the medical aspect of trans-ness is the fact that a lot of people don't understand the difference between sex and gender. Those people tend to measure gender using sex because they don't know another way to do it. They know that women can be masculine and still be women, and they hopefully know that men can be feminine and still be men, so without an understanding of what is actually meant by gender, they assume gender must mean sex . Otherwise, why couldn't trans guys just be tomboys? We know the difference between gender expression and gender identity, but many people don't because it's not a topic most people are ever exposed to. As a result, people assume that being trans is inherently about switching sex. These can be well-meaning people who just don't know.

The more and more and more media companies elevate people who don't actually have a passion for media, the worse all media is going to get. like, Walt Disney was a business man, but he was also an artist. He knew his stuff. A lot of movies over time were made by people who knew the media they were working in, or who at least respected it enough to get people who knew it to make it. But that has become less and less common as time has gone on. Disney's Wish did a similar thing with the music, where they got people who did not know the medium and said 'good enough :) this will give us profit' and it showed. Wish was a horrific failure. And companies keep looking for new ways to cut creative and expert corners...for what? Is the slop really that good for them?
by the way, another thing that doesn't make sense in the movie: the Israeli surgeon. in Israel, bottom surgeries are illegal unless approved by the state (one of the many contributing factors to the fact many Israeli trans people do their bottom surgery abroad, sometimes with their insurance even paying for the flight as well as the surgery).
had this been an Israeli surgeon working in the US it'd have made sense. but in the movie he's working in Tel Aviv. that means that either the surgery is illegal (something that the hospital staff would know), or Emilia is going through the state's bureaucracy and is getting recognition from the Ministry of Health, which is defnintely not the case.
French movie cosplaying as a Mexican movie without giving any credits, awards or prestige to actual Mexican cinema, it's so cruel in that aspect too. It makes me think, having a movie like "I'm still here" winning an academy award would be positively huge, culturally and economically to a latin american country- Emilia Peréz would take these possibilities from Mexico by simply existing in the spotlight, it's cultural appropriation to a T (saying this in the perspective of academy ratings, because if we're going by the overwhelmingly negative public perception then I don't feel bad for France to take the immense L for it instead of latino artists lmao)
This film is hot trash. Thank you for putting in your two cents. I watched it in November, and I’m so glad to see my reaction is up there with the majority of trans people and Mexican people.
I watched it.
Wow. Terrible. The only good part was the lead actress. And the fact that she took the role makes me wonder just how bad it is for trans actors, that she was desperate and would have taken any role, y'know?
And the music? The "music"?? With subtitles, and honestly, the "musical" aspect is ridiculous! Most of the time that the captions add music notes, they're just talking!!
It was awful. Awful awful awful!
Also, as a side note, I used to really like Jessie Gender and her videos and creativity, but ever since she started working with PhilosophyTube, someone who openly supports novels like Lolita, amongst a slew of other problematic issues that no one but me seems to care about but me, her style and content has changed. PT's influence is starting to rub off onto Jessie, and I don't like how it has changed her style. I'm frustrated that I'm the only one who speaks up against people like PT (and Contrapoints), but I hope soon people will start to see what I've been seeing for years, and I hope Jessie isn't harmed by that deserved backlash. Just sayin'.

Oh, just a small distinction: In regard to the actressses, Selena Gomez is Canadian not American, but yes, Mexican critics are valid.
I love every video that is being recommended to me hating on this movie and it's nominations. But mostly, I love when it's a video with a trans person or mexican/latino perspective because you can really see how outdated the whole concept of this movie is. And of course, I'm discovering amazing channels and creators throughout the process, like you! Amazing video!
No, the Director dont know Spanish either, he have being shown using translators in every spanish speaking interview. This explain another criticism that a lot of us people from latinoamerica have with this movie: the spanish dialogue, which like you say was most of the movie. It honestly feels like it was writen by a spanish speaking AI or more likely the script was written in the director original lenguage and then translated using "Google Transtalte". I know a lot people that have only expirience the movie by subtitles because doesnt speak the lenguage wouldnt notice, but for as that can is baffling that this acceptable for a movie nominated for the oscars and even worst the main actor, that is from Mexico, let herselfer and her costars continue with this atrocity to the Spanish lengugage.
In south america we have many issues but a big thing is: you mess up with one of us you mess up with EVERYONE.
I'm gonna make a radical perspective: imagine I make a movie about 9/11 with actors from south america with extremely thick english accent and in the middle of the movie, I chose to direct that one of the people manipulating the plane looks at the camera and said "oh no what i'm doing is bad :( let me stop this" and then the person stops the plane and starts helping to clean the area and rescue people, while everything is a musical saying "my vajayay hurts!" and then, when understandably north american people have questions, I will deflect saying "yeah I know 9/11 by heart, I don't need research. Also, the actors there suck so we HAD to hire south americans to act as north americans!"
Although I'm not mexican and I really don't know much about the suffering that carteles have brough over decades, I know the hardships of living here (I'm from venezuela) and I would be LIVID if someone made a musical about Chavez/Maduro and that the director had the guts not only of saying that there isn't talent and they didn't need to research but that the language (spanish) is a lesser language which boils my blood because french people became STUPID and hothead if you misspronounce a single word.
Also the attitude of Karla has been nothing but terrible. I get it that she chose to sink alongside the movie because she honestly believes that she will won an oscar, and who knows, maybe she will but this movie is the perfect representation of the people who are like "SHHHH IM YOUR SAVIOR, I KNOW WHAT YOURE DOING, SHUT UP YOU IDIOT!". It's not only insulting to Mexicans but to the entire latin community.
Hell we usually don't hang out that much with Brazilians and sometimes they feel outside of being latin (because of the language barrier) and even then, they joined with us with the boycott of this piece of absolute trash that made a caricature of real pain for white people to pat down their shoulders thinking that they did something

HOW is this movie even being considered for best direction when Dune part 2 exists?
The weird thing about the focus on the surgeries (aside from the fact that it's gross) is that those surgeries aren't exclusive to trans people, so why bother bringing them up at all? What was the point? I have heard of this movie, but I didn't realise it was this bad. I usually try to watch anything LGBTQ+ themed in an (admittedly, probably futile and useless) effort to supporr them, but I think the world has gone beyond visibility at any cost and better to have negative than none now. We're a quarter of the way through the 21st century. Movie makers need to stop acting like it's the 1970s.
These characters do not come into contact with a single grain of sand during this entire film and the director actually expected me to believe they were in Mexico??? 😑
Honestly, the only Oscar winners I saw in the the theaters were "Everyhing Everywhere All At Once" and "Parasite" every year I look at the Oscars and go, What the hell is this film?"

@cas4047 I saw the TV glow is probably the highlight of trans movies that came out in 2024. Nimona is a Phoenix of a movie that came out of the ashes being rescued by Annapurna after Disney canceled post purchasing the studio that was making it. Pose is a TV show that is a bit older now, but no less good. There's a lot more, but those are the ones to come to the top of my head.
I am a pansexual cisgender woman* who has only had one trans friend & now has a young, trans family member. Medicalism is terribly harmful & terrifying to me. I don’t want someone I love to risk surgery (general anaesthesia is dangerous) to be recognised. It doesn’t matter what you have between your legs, you are valid from the moment you recognise yourself. Then when you decide to live as your authentic self, other people can recognise your truth. It’s completely okay to change labels as you learn more about yourself. I used to identify as bisexual because I didn’t know pansexual was an option. The people who love you will recognise that you are still the soul they cherish in a different wrapper (god that has to be so expensive, creating an entirely new wardrobe)

I never saw anybody like this movie, everybody hates it for the awful rep of both the hispanic and lgbt+ communities as well as the lack of research and a whole lot of other problems, so it having an oscar is insane
