    I shoot almost every year in the pistol phase in the Presidents 💯. Military and civilians compete during this match at Camp Perry Ohio. The course of fire is 20 shots slow fire at 50 yards, 10 shots timed and 10 shots rapid fire at 25 yards. You must use one hand only. This is a prestige match but the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge is the highest US shooting award for the military and civilians. It’s one of the most difficult marksmanship awards to earn. Each badge is made with coined gold, has your name, serial number and year engraved on the back. My badge was awarded in 2011.

    I’m a bandsman (42R) currently serving with the 10th Mountain Division Band. The band tab is interesting because many bands don’t wear a band tab, but some bands do, like the 8th Army band from Korea, the US Army Field Band, and TUSAB. The idea for a 10th Mountain Division band patch to be worn was floated around, but never came to fruition. We just wear the mountain tab like the rest of the division.

    It's true that you can be in a "Airborne" tabbed unit and not be Airborne qualified. I was in the XVIII Airborne Corps but never went to Airborne School because there was no way in hell I'm jumping out of a perfectly good airplane and it was not a requirement in the Corps unit, although preference was given if you wanted to go to Airborne School. 82nd Airborne Division, on the other hand, does require all of it's members to be Airborne qualified.

    A small note regarding Ranger identifiers:
    The Ranger tab is achieved by completing Ranger School, not RASP/RIP-- RASP/RIP is the training and selection program for going into Ranger-specific units, whereas the Ranger School is a certifying school you apply to and undertake, and receive the tab at the end of if you pass. Also, Ranger unit tabs are also called scrolls, more commonly for the right-shoulder placement for going into theater in a Ranger unit or attached to one with recognition/given under special programs and joint ops circumstances.
    A few other tabs not detailed:
    Sniper tab (fairly self-explanatory, received once Sniper qualified after the school)
    Sentinel tab (for old guard/tomb of unknown soldier)
    Diver tab (technically another special unit within the Army, not well known but there is an episode of "Surviving the Cut" on that school)
    Great video brother.

    How recent is your reference info on who wears what tab(s)?
    I retired in Nov. 1984 from the Army after 20 years 1965-1968 & 1977-1984.
    During those years the only personnel authorized to were the SF, Ranger, Paratrooper/Airborne, Sapper and Army Band tabs actually completed those special training courses. Just being assigned with any such unit in a support position did not authorize you to wear those tabs without having completed the respective courses or in the case of the Army Band tab, you had to hold an Army Band MOS.
    Any MOS could wear the Airborne/Paratrooper and Ranger tabs provided they successfully completed the course. Only SF soldiers having completed that course were authorized to wear that tab, but not anyone otherwise assigned to an SF unit.
    Same held true for Congressional and Presidential Unit Citation medals…the red and blue rectangular gold framed medals worn over right breast pocket. Only soldiers assigned to the unit when awarded the medal were authorized to wear the medal regardless of what other units they may subsequently be reassigned to during normal rotation; but soldiers not assigned to the unit when the medal was awarded to the unit were only authorized to wear the medal while assigned to that unit.
    All other medals/ribbons and qualification badges were worn on an individual basis regardless of unit they are/were assigned to.

  • @dallasyap3064
    @dallasyap3064 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually the President's Hundred tab is worn at the top. That tab is longer than the Special Forces tab. The Special Forces unit patch/SSI is not just for SF personnel or SF support personnel but for the entire 1st Special Forces Command. There are other units under the 1st Special Forces Command. So personnel in these units will wear the same SSI as Green Berets. And yeah only 3 tabs can be worn at a time. But those 3 tabs are individual tabs. The airborne tab doesn't count bcoz it's part of the unit SSI. If a Green Beret has the Special Forces tab, the Ranger tab and the Sapper tab, he is allowed to wear 3 of them along with the unit SSI and the airborne tab, which is part of the SSI. So he will have Special Forces tab, Ranger tab, Sapper tab and the airborne tab (along with SSI).

      The ranger tab can only be worn if you graduated from ranger school and it's documented on your ERB. The Airborne tab is something that is only worn with a unit patch of an Airborne unit. The tab does not indicate that the person is Airborne, that's what the badge is for but you also must have graduated from Airborne school and have it on your ERB.

    • @soomi3541
      @soomi3541 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      “Recondo” was a short name for the “reconnaissance commando” course the Army used to teach, and rather foolishly stopped teaching. While I wasn’t able to attend this course, my older brother did back in the ‘70’s when he (and many others like him) was an Air Force Academy cadet (summer training for them). Just as the Army, back in the late ‘70’s, was training, and graduating, approximately 18,000 students per year from the Airborne school at Benning--which was a far, far greater number of airborne-qualified soldiers than our military needed--because it was such an effective confidence-building course that taught individuals how to overcome very legitimate fears of falling to their death, or being injured otherwise, and helping them learn what they were capable of accomplishing with proper training and good equipment, so should the Recondo course have been continued. The skills learned in that course would have benefited any downed aircrew, or any individuals/small units who became separated from their larger, “parent” unit in combat--basically, a very good course on escape & evasion skills, which were the same skills a recon unit would need/use when operating independently as a small team. And, just like graduating far more airborne-qualified soldiers than we actually needed each year, a hell of a course to teach you how to survive, and get home, as a combat-effective team, and maybe bring back some useful knowledge about the enemy as well. Another good course lost to stupidity and cost cutting by idiots who would never, themselves, be in a situation to need that training. But, such is the modern philosophy of our American military leadership.

      Shortly after Vietnam, the 101st was redesignated as an “air mobile” division. They have been allowed to keep the airborne title because they were an effective airborne unit during WWII (Re: HBO’s “Band of Brothers” series, based on the book of the same name, if you want to see some of their history.). When I went through the Air Assault course at Campbell, back in ‘78, the official title for the unit that was displayed at the main gate was “101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)”.
