    haha oh my gosh yes!! It was my first time out of the country, I was 17 and alone and I had been in Rome a few days but wanted to head out and get away from the crowds. So, I purchased what I thought was an overnight train to Rimini. In reality, it was two trains with a stopover. I found this out when the train got to its last stop for the night and I got told to get off. When I looked to the conductor confused he proceeded to point to a timetable which told me I had to catch another train at 6am the following morning. I think it was maybe 1am when I got there and with everything dark and closed I headed for the public toilet for the night to keep safe and warm. Not surprisingly the story does not end here.The next morning I was all ready for my train and as it arrived I patiently waited for the doors to open automatically, as I was used to here in New Zealand. Much to my surprise while I was standing there, bag in hand the engine started to rumble and off it went with me still on the platform. By this point the terminal was open and I went in to purchase another ticket. All sorted I thought. I've got this. I know what to do when to do it, its all going to be fine. The automated schedule may be broken but there's a clock and I was ready. The time came and the train appeared strangely promptly. I pressed the button. The doors opened. I got on. About half an hour passed, I was well and truly settled in and happily watching the Italian countryside roll by when finally the train attendant comes to check my ticket. Im on the wrong train. Not only that but im headed into the completely wrong region of Italy. Not surprisingly I get kicked off at the next station. Which really wasn't a statio, more of a concrete cube with a vending machine dispensing tickets. I bought one and got on the next train heading back the other direction from once I came. Once there I purchased another ticket, well two actually, cause I now had to catch two different trains to get to my destination. This time I made a friend and managed to not only catch the first train but the connecting one too. Yay success she thought. Not quite. By this point, I was still thoroughly anxious about train travel and I was nervous that the only thing that could happen now was that I'd miss my stop. And so, when I saw the first sign saying Rimini I jumped off. Wrong stop. I was an over an hour walk from my hostel which I discovered when I found an internet cafe and looked at a map - did I mention I had no phone as it broke my first day? I being a strong independent woman said fuck it im walking and proceeded to drag my hot pink wheely suitcase (worst purchase idea ever) along the cobbled streets. After not too long a young Italian man stopped on his scooter and offered to give me a lift. I, of course, said yes. WIth my giant suitcase wedged between his legs and me hanging on the back I finally made it to my hostel, albeit not before being stopped by some curious policemen. Since this experience I have now become an expert on public transport and whenever I travel I check everything ridiculously thoroughly. I also treasure this story cause it honestly makes me laugh when I think about how on earth I managed to get it all so wrong !! 😂😂😂Also wow that was way longer than expected!! if you make to the end I'll be amazed.

      Eleisha Fisk I am so glad the story ended well, I was really worried while reading this! I thought you were gonna end up in Naples...
      Just curious, why did you go from Rome to Rimini? That's quite a journey, and there are much nicer beaches way closer to Rome
      (I'm Italian btw)

    • @eleishafisk9872
      @eleishafisk9872 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a cheap ticket and didn't seem that far to me. I didn't do any research into the place it was very much what are the next trains leaving and just Google maped a couple destination and brought the ticket. Very little thought went into my that 3 month trip very much just going where the wind blew me 😊 im headed back next year though and I have thoroughly researched places this time haha

      Eleisha Fisk makes sense now :) train fair (especially the treno regionale) is still very affordable in Italy, it can be very misleading! Plus crossing the country from the west to the east coast is tricky because of the mountain range that runs in the middle :)
      We all learn from our mistakes, sometimes it's a though lesson to learn :)

    wow I remember you guys mentioning this story before and it's amazing to hear it in detail like this. I didn't remember that you didn't get your stuff back... that's crazy! Many "negative" things have happened to me while traveling (but then taking something from it) but one quick story is in Santiago (Chile) I was riding the metro at rush hour, and I put my new iphone 6 (which we were using to film youtube videos and take photos) in the front pocket of my purse (which didn't have a zipper anymore so it was open) And of course someone stole it. I tried everything, from going to the police to contacting Apple... didn't get it back. I was honestly so nonchalant with my belongings before that moment and didn't really take care of my things, but after that, I always knew to put away my more valuable material items!

    When me and my husband went to Las Vegas the hotel asked at check in if we minded leaving a credit card number for incidentals. Now we have done this before and had no issues so we agreed. Not even 30 minutes later when we check our account almost all our spending money was gone. The had charged us $300! We had to talk to quite a few people to finally speak to the manager only to hear that nothing could be done and we would have our money back a week after checkout. It did put a damper on our trip and definitely taught us to never leave a credit card number for incidentals again.

    • @myopinions1
      @myopinions1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noelle Oppedisano it's an authorization not a charge and you can't stay at a hotel unless they see you have money in your account if you mess up the room. The authorization falls off when your bank decides to. Unless the hotel backs the authorization number with a charge it doesn't charge you and stays pending for as long as your bank decides to allow. Sounds like it was your first hotel stay. Traveo more. And save up more money to travel

    Great vlog, sorry this happened to you , but I'm glad you guys were ok. One time while in Mexico with my folks, we were robbed at gun point by a cop. We were sitting in traffic and my dad said why is this cop walking towards us. Well he asked my dad to roll down his window, when he did he put a gun to my dad's head and demanded all our money and jewlery . We gave him everything, my dad was shook and mad as hell. Needless to say we left Mexico that same day, and my dad has never returned back.

    I hear you about the Tourism Police. I was pickpocketed in Lisbon this past February (Lisbon is a very safe city and Portugal 🇵🇹 is an incredibly safe country) but I was violated and had a panic attack (because I was lost without my iPhone maps). I found a police officer who directed me to the Tourism Police station. There I was treated very well, by very kind officers who did what they could to help and assure me.
    * note: buy extra insurance for all your gear. I paid only about $300 to cover my iPhone, 2 cameras, iPad, MacBookPro ... and thank goodness! I scanned the police report to my broker and within 24 hours I was told o could get a new iPhone... * note 2 Do Not buy your replacement gear overseas (in my case Europe). Wait until you get back (for me Canada) because of operating systems standards.
    I’m glad the police helped you...

    My girlfriend and I almost burned alive in our sleep while skiing in Italy. The consierge mis-communicated the instructions on using the heating system they had installed and only for I woke up in the middle of the night to use the washroom I smelled the smoke coming from the cupboard that had the heater in it. It was connected to a fan that pushed the head out into the room however the switch for this was in another part of the cabin so we never knew we had to turn it on to push the heat out and so the cupboard was slowly starting to catch fire! 🙈 Thankfully we were not harmed and they moved us into the honeymoon suite which was nice.

Just choose a decent hotel with good reviews next time. Foreigners think they can be cool and live anywhere in India, but as an Indian even I can never be too careful. Just have to be on my toes all the time.

    That sounds like an absolute nightmare, it's nice that you both put a positive spin on why it might have happened though.
    In June, my fiancé and I visited Canada for the second time. We flew into Calgary, stayed in Golden for the first night and our plan was to drive from there straight to Whistler in one day. (Yeah, you might laugh and I do now.) There was a huge rain storm in the night and it caused a mudslide, shutting the 1 for days. There was no easy way around it and we ended up having to drive down to Cranbrook and across. We planned to stay in a place called Hope (ironically) and that wasn't going to take us much longer than the drive to Whistler. Until we came to a halt on a mountain road for over two hours because a crew had been rock blasting and had blown a huge chunk out of one carriageway. That taught us that if you're planning to drive a long way in one day, you need to at least look at backup plans, alternative routes, and places you could stop if something happens.

    Bringing a simple doorstop may help feeling more comfortable and safe while sleeping. Sure it doesn't make the room all burglarproof but knowing it makes it at least harder for people to get in gives me a bit more peace and quiet. Doesn't aplly for windows though, so always double or even triple check the place you're staying at is safe.

    I think looking like a westerner has it's perks when you're traveling because people tend to have a bit of respect or fear of repercussions if they tried to do something to you. So if something did happen to them, its few and far between compared to its own demographic. As an Indian American I am terrified to travel in India because the people look at us like we're some naive version of them that they can take advantage of. I actually really enjoyed your story and appreciate that you can still have a positive outlook but it also make me angry and sad at the same time because corruption is everywhere in India, and you may have felt reasure by those "tourist cops" but that was the whole point. It's a facade to keep you coming to the country when in fact those police men don't give an Ef that you lost your crap. 2nd if that happened to me no one would bat an eye at all. India is a beautiful country and sometimes you can find people with absolutely down to earth and beautiful personalities but there's also a lot of pure evil personalities clearly visible.

    wow! crazy story. I am soooo afraid of this stuff happening to me. This kind of thing is what makes me more anxious. Im a solo female traveller so if someone came into my room at night they probably wouldn't leave with just my stuff.

    I hope you learned from your thoughts... And expectations of the big guy with muscles... Sometimes it's the short guy with glasses that has your back...
    That really sounded awful when you said that

    Wow that's just crazy mincha I would have been so pissed but living in Brooklyn walking to my brothers house I got robbed by gun point but that just taught me to always no matter where you are be aware of your surroundings like people going into the city (Manhattan) like tourist go they need to yes look at the buildings is nice but be aware of what's going on around you b/c pick pocketing is very easy to do they watch and take notice of how aware u are and there was quite a few things that I went through but can't say

      +Doug Ferrera ya it's important to know that these things can happen anywhere. I'm really sorry that you experienced what you did. I definitely have a certain way I walk and look when I'm walking down the street in a new place so I avoid being a target. Head is always up, looking like I know exactly where I'm going and I always make eye contact and look confident with people I pass.

    The hardest experience that I had was when a did a interail across Italy and I field up the ticket with the date shanti was travelling and I had to corrected because my pen stoped working, the inspector came to check my ticket and sad had falsified the date, when I tried to explain what happen he didn't let my didn't what to return my ID and sad I had so pay 200€ on the spot...when a arrived to the destination a had to force hem to listen to me because I had proved that I was not in Italy at the time that he was saying, I had the plain ticket the booking reservation at the other city's and more, finally after almost 1h he said OK OK gives me back my ID and my ticket . A friend told me later that they in Italy some times try to extort money from you. I loved Italy but the Italian people didn't let the best impression, no one helped me our asked me if I was ok, sow in the end be careful whit your interail ticket

    Me and my friend went to Athens last year. We were taking the metro to a beach (we got it to the end of the metro line and then had to walk a couple of miles to the beach). There was a creepy man we met on the metro who was insistent that we joined him to party and drink. Obviously we turned down his offers and he got off a few stops before we did. So maybe an hour after all of this we got to the beach, and then after about 5/10 minutes of being there, I looked up and saw the man we'd met on the metro. We were convinced we'd been followed as he must have gotten off the metro a good few miles from where we did.

    Ive done several medical and regular missions trips to Mexico. I always kept my phone and money on my body, and hid it when sleeping. We also made sure that we didnt take anything with us that we would be upset about if lost or stolen. Luckily, people seemed really grateful that we were there, so we never had any medical equipment or belongings stolen. Im sorry that you two had to go through that, so many awful people out there. However, a few years later, a wonderful couple from another church who had been going down to Mexico for decades, were murdered for their truck and belongings, we never went back after that.

      +Sierra Brown those stories are so unfortunate and seem to be what the news feeds off of. I've felt scared after hearing these stories, but it's so important to not let an unfortunate event scare you from doing what you love. Anything can happen anywhere at anytime.

    India's a great country and the tourist police were really helpful to me on a minor issue. That said, I got robbed in Canada, my camera was stolen and I knew who did it. The police would not help me and told me I'd "lost it". I'm glad the Calcutta police helped you. I can't say the same for the Canadian police. It goes to say, the police in India, despite all the corruption, can be very helpful, while the police in a place like Canada, which is supposedly not so corrupt, are s**t. I'll travel in India over
    Canada any day!!
