The First Lady described reminds me of my wife sister She was a free spirit who loved people and water better than anything else She was a great person and unfortunately she made a bad decision to take a midnight dip in the lake and she never came back out in her own She is so deeply missed we all love you Vic Vic You were one of a kind!!!
REK lives in my town out in the TX Hill Country, and every July he puts on a great show - FOR FREE! - for all the local folks. We jam and sing along and this is usually his closer and there’s nothing sweeter than being down by the Guadalupe and singing along with all your friends; with the whole town, in fact. And then the fireworks. . We love him and he is our “local hero”! He participates in a LOT of stuff for charities, etc. and he gives it his all, every. Time. We love you, REK!
Saw him recently in the greeting card aisle at our local HEB. A few days later I parked I pulled into a spot in the same parking lot and next to me was Kinky Friedman loading the back of his old truck with dog food. God bless Kerrville.
A great song! And a great delivery of a one of a kind song! Love those Robert Earl Keen tunes! Love how the late great Nanci Griffiths looks on in admiration...all those years ago.
This was featured on a show called Town and Country with John Prine. It aired in England on Channel 4 about 1990. This segment features Nanci Griffith as well as Buddy Mondlock who does a beautiful version of Coming Down in the Rain which is also available on TH-cam
That song has always been a fave but this version is exceptional. Powerfully evocative lyrics and sung with absolute conviction. Like a little movie within a song which works the same way as "El Paso" by Marty Robbins.
The Boyette brothers were also my landlords and I lived about three blocks from the "This Old Porch" house behind the Chicken. I heard Lyle, Robert et al many times out pickin' on that porch during my freshman year at Texas A&M. Good times...
the violin called out sick and this one is still great without him... but with the violin ..great becomes the greatest.... the best version is one click away
This girl is just looking at him like a seagull staring at the space shuttle she has no idea what greatness she is on the stage with after she sings her songs about fairies and unicorns
@@oldnsad Yup. Actually, REK's sounds ok here. Buth those 90s albums where you just know the mix is mostly from the line and not a great mic are just horribllllle...but everyone did it. They just didn't know.
Talk about a song that never ages.
Brings back memories of Aggieland and dancing at the Hall at last call.

This segment was taken from "Town & Country with John Prine - Ep. 1: Albert Lee, Nanci Griffith, White Pants, Rodney Crowell" (1990).👍
Nancy Griffith sitting there makes me happy
This is a story that exists in some form in every small town and every dream gone wrong.

Great songwriter.
Follower of REK since 1986. ❤
I like the way capos up and plays it on the high notes this is an easy song to play with a profound message he pulls it off great big fan
One of the best story REK has ever told.
Sorry I'm 5 years late to the punch ... but yeah. Trying to promote.
It is a great story.
Maybe the best anyone ever told. It's definitely the best Ballad I have heard.
@@johnnysalter7072 a close second would be "Shades of Gray"
@@Obironnkenobi nah, "The road goes on forever" is a close second to "Shades of grey

Epic song in the underground.....
REK is my all time favorite !!! 👌👍👍👍
A great rendition. I got hooked on this song from the Highwaymen.
Robert Earl keen wrote this. Not the highway men
@@colbydavis7284 , never said they did. My comment was I got hooked on song after listening to the Highwaymen perform it.
My buddy from Cleburne introduced me to REK right around the time Tom Landry passed on in 2/2000.
Those memories are cemented in my soul.
GROWING UP....
Unreal!
You so right
the proud and Joy of Shapstown High school H-Town
That's fantastic! I'm glad his voice hasn't changed.
The greatest Ballad I ever heard.
my parents listened to REK when they were at TCU. one of the best songs of all time.
The best Robert Earl song ever party never ends amen
This is one of the coolest road songs ever written maybe the best few cords but lots of great lyrics he performs it great on just an acoustic guitar

Yes William that's correct. I did have most of the series on VHS at one time but alas no longer. By the way, John Prine is a legend.
Love coming down in the rain, had this on vhs thanks for reminding me about it

Robert Earl Keen, Jr. is always on of my favorites from the Texas Singer/Songwriters I've heard over the years.
Man.
This has always been the best cut of all early days.. metroplex
This one is a truly wonderful song
Sonny and Cherie ... what an adventure and brilliant ending
JUST TELLING IS LIKE IT REALLY IS.
LIFE ISN'T ALL WINE AND ROSES

Pure awesome
domo ariagotto ! Gracias, Maholo ! Donka, Thanks !
There is a video of a last few verses to this song , worth a YT search. Very well done , a tribute to Robert Earl Keen.
This is a glorious piece of music history, thank you for sharing. ✌️
Such a good classic
The Boyette brothers were also my landlords and I lived about three blocks from the "This Old Porch" house behind the Chicken. I heard Lyle, Robert et al many times out pickin' on that porch during my freshman year at Texas A&M.
Good times...
Greatness emerging
Indeed. I never tire of watching this.
Will be stuck in my head for at least a week ... probably a month or more.
Listen to that acoustic sing
He was So cute

Naci Griffith beside him and she's like yeah not my scene.
great vid!! he looks 14yo...
just a kid!
Wow, would have been nice to see a bit more. That is Nanci Griffith in the background.
Yes, that's a very young looking Nanci
+oldnsad a very young REK too!
I thought that was her! Yes, would have been great to see them play together.
REK in the 'larval state'
Nanci Griffith was born in New Jersey in 1951.
I thought that was she. Thanks. And thanks for the info. btw Jerry Jeff was from Oneonta, NY.
Just Google. 7-6-53 Seguin, TX.
think that it had to be before 90, as Robert was 35 in 90 and he doesn't look over 30
Very Tom Petty sounding... really good
Sounds a lot like a young Bob Dylan.
Anyone know how old he was when this was made. This is as good as it gets.
1990
So young! He was in college at Texas A&M in the 1980s so I’ll guess mid-20s.
Is that Nanci Griffith wearing white pants?👍
Prodigy
Awesome song! Does somebody know the chords for this version? Thanks in advance:)
anybody? when was this recorded, what was the format, how old was rejected ( Nancy Griffith)anyone?
What year was this?

That's Nanci Griffith there!

ahhh, yes, the 90s...when most folks played dawgshit acoustic guitars.
Too true but they played them well
