You can't beat the "Smoggies" - great respect for these "Working Class" people. Just got on with life - that was their lot. Brian Clough, Chris Rea - what "Legends". Brian Clough mentions Chris & his family in his book. Peter from Australia.
My dad was a policeman in Cleveland police back in the late 60’s early 70’s. One of his duties was at times to supervise the crossing where the pupils crossed to get to Stainsby school, and to this day I feel a connection to this beautiful song.
He is a fucking Legend. What a voice and Songwriter/ Musician/ Top, Top Bloke. IF THIS IS WHAT THE BRIT/ ITALIA HYBRID IS LIKE WE SHOULD OF MADE MORE OF THEM! 😁😁
My favourite version of this song. I also like the laser precision killer synth riff in the instrumental interlude. It's a great tune. Chris Rea is brilliant.
Ken Wiles , I met a guy from Middlesborough way back in 1978 in Magaluf , we danced the night away , never forgot him , Chris Rea, when he. was young reminds me of him , same mop of blonde curly hair , great memories , kept alive by the music of this genius , the master that is Chris Rea
Chris wrote this song about his wife Joan.He chased her all round till she became his girl......she went to the Stainsby academy girls school. The Lyrics are so true....!!!!!! "Some girls steal your heart....most still do!!!!! But a Stainsby Girl could break it in two!!!"
Chris, pure genius. I've followed you for...ever. I've seen you twice, in Austria and...I don't even remember it was so long ago. Tbh I've not seen this video before. An obvious 80's classic when video producers went overboard on the literal meaning of your lyrics, in the style of Dire Straits' 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Tunnel of Love'. 'Bluest water, Stainsby blue' accompanied by a shot of..erm...blue ocean water is a classic snippet of the time. I learnt to play air guitar on this track and now I'm an expert in 80's air guitar...sadly, it doesn't pay as well as the real thing... ;)
A real musician playing real instruments. Pure joy. Not about himself trying to put a message out about himself, just great music put out there to enjoy. Yes, maybe a comment, but about life, not some egocentric such as Sam Smith or Billie Eilish or whatever they are.
It's about the girls from Stainsby School. The video shows you them dressing up and going to a nightclub. Chris said in an interview that the Stainsby Girls always went out with older boys who took them to nightclubs. He said he and his school mates were in love with them but the girls just thought they were immature schoolkids. How times change. Now they all act like immature schookids even into their thirties lol.
@@Karaokejax yes, but the first part of that line too 'Some loved horses and always stayed at home But the Stainsby girls loved the Rolling Stones' :-)
I was 19 saw copperhead road tour town and county club, energy orchard never showed up , so steve oil and dukes did 3 hour concert, a few of the pogues come on for Johnny come lately minus Mr McGowan, it blew my mind , love him legend
I know mate. The quality of His output and playing should put Him right up there. Other's loss though eh? He seems like a top, top bloke. I can't believe how unlucky He's been with His health. Paddy the same. How come those 2 north eastern music legends have had all the shit when that wanker Sumner ( though taleted) gets away unscathed. 😁 Take Care Fella.👍
Yes I've recently got really into his music though I've played various things of his for years. I've just discovered that he didn't start playing guitar until his early twenties!
I lived in the Boro on and off throughout the 80s and did my degree in Chris's home town.I lived in the Halls of Residence more or less opposite his Dad's ice cream and chocolate shop. Cracking family...cracking bloke..
Bless you Chris I have missed your music over the years and am so glad I found your awesome music and fantastic voice again ❤ I too am a C survivor 🙏🏼😊
My darling attended Tranby Croft Girls' School, Hull - early to mid 1960s. Mary is forever my Stainsby/Tranby Girl. 💖 Thank you Chris R. Stay free. R 💚 🍻 😎
I knew Chis from the Kirklevington Country Club. Chris knew the girls who were stewardesses on BMA flights to London! Some were from or around Stainsby. Great times and I'm so sad it has all gone! Great guy Chris!
Have to agree. A lot of the re-recordings on "New Light Throught Old Windows" sounded more like the finished product (e.g. On The Beach, which gained a guitar riff which is now the songs signature feature, or Driving Home For Christmas with the piano which is missing from the original), but Stainsby Girls had all it needed first time around.
Rea never was huge in America because he knew he would be needed 30/ 40 years later for the digital generation...glad I didn't listen then...only saw glimpses.
Saw him on the R.T.H. tour and still remember him on the Radio 1 D.LT. Saturday morning show saying 'Can I just tell my wife I've left the immersion on'. 🙄
Spanish City lol. Used to be packed back in the day. Went to see him at the arena in the toon a few years ago. Great concert. Top man. If you get the chance, go see the guy.
A small part of Middlesbrough (Stainsby school) will be forever imortalised by this song.....Chris, youre a true smoggie!! ✊

Captain Cook was born in Marton, not far from Stainsby.
One of the most underrated musician of all time! Love it 💪👌
Really true!
Good song 🎸
This is an absolute classic track. I am 70this year and it is still defining, musically and lyrically - a masterpiece.....
Could never understand how this fine musician and, Vocalist was never huge, when so many lesser talents, were? Melbourne, Australia,
He is huge 👌
Certainly is !
Huge in the eyes of those who love him, but never really got the recognition he deserved…….maybe he was happier that way 🙂
He is a fucking Legend. What a voice and Songwriter/ Musician/ Top, Top Bloke. IF THIS IS WHAT THE BRIT/ ITALIA HYBRID IS LIKE WE SHOULD OF MADE MORE OF THEM! 😁😁
Обожаю его!!! Его музыка это мировое достояние!
Chris was one of my regular customers at a butcher shop in Acklam, Middlesbrough. He was always polite & humble....great guy & fab music
This song has it all. Great lyrics, killer guitar work, and a sax solo to finish off! I f*****g love it!
My favourite version of this song. I also like the laser precision killer synth riff in the instrumental interlude. It's a great tune. Chris Rea is brilliant.
Just pure raw talent.
Cracking track from one of the most underrated performers ever
One of the best from the maestro himself. Great composer, great musician.
I'm proud to be from Middlesbrough, like Chris, and I'm proud to be a Stainsby boy! He's right about the Stainsby girls ... I dated one or two of 'em!
Watcha Mate. Good on You. Wasn't this about The Big Fella's Mrs.? A massive All the Best from Down South...I mean Geographically..I'm spoken for. 😁😁👍

Boro lad to a original Boro lad a ture Legend. 👍
A song from his heart I love it❤

I am sure we could all write about those times from our past with similar experience !!
To think this entered the UK Top 40 37 years ago today😮😮where the fcuk has the time gone
I was based in London when this was released... I could do anything then. At least some things don”t age. Chris Rea, what a lovely voice!
Still one of my all time favourite Chris Rea tracks
A brilliant record. Love all of Chris's stuff but this tops the lot
This is real music!!! Love it! ❤️

Nobody will remember the names of those ego centrics you named in ten years. they will know Rea though.
Coming up to Christmas. Stumbled across this.
How on earth does this not have more views? One of the quintessential songs of the 80s with one of the best lines ever.
Stainsby by girls loved the Rolling Stones?
@@Karaokejax yes, but the first part of that line too 'Some loved horses and always stayed at home
But the Stainsby girls loved the Rolling Stones' :-)
Plato had answer to that question 3000 years ago
He wasn't from South England, they always got more airplay..
Pure brilliance
Love his voice 🎶 brings back great memories 😉🙂
Me 2. And the stainsby girls loved the rolling stones.
He was a northerner, southerners always got more airplay.
T, T, Teessider, Boro legend, great singer and his dad's ice cream was legendary. Always had one on a Boro home game.
