In Singapore they do both -raise prices and cut portions. Within 2 weeks and a great shock today, a regular patronised duck rice store hiked the prices close to 10% and shrank rice and meat by 20%.

Yes. I also notice the same thing. This chicken rice restaurant I usually patronize.

In Indonesia SGD 1 you can get 1 full meal (in village nasi pecel only IDR 5k-SGD 45 cents) , impossible in Singapore. But domestic air fare really pricey (YIA-BPN usually IDR 1600k-SGD 145) compared to international air fare (YIA-SIN IDR 330k-SGD 30)

It really depends on which part of Indonesia you are living. In Jakarta, cost of one meal with drink in office area will be around sgd 3 - 4 and around sgd 7-8 if you eat at the restaurant with aircon. Eating out in shopping mall for family with 2 kids will be around sgd 20 - 40. Jakarta median wages for fresh grad is around sgd 600 whilst singapore median wages for fresh grad is sgd 3000 with no income tax. Which makes quality of life and/or purchasing power for working jakartans are 1/4 of singaporeans. Central java food cost is far below but then again the wages also very low.

I like the high prices of food. It helped me a lot of cut off fast food, processed sugar, snacks, sodas. I cook now simple meal at home (rice, steamed vegetables and proteins, oats for breakfast) and I drink only water. I even cut the consumption of coffee. I was so addicted to coffe and matcha. When I see the pricea of sweets in the shop, I think that it’s too expensive and I never buy it. I invest this money to buy vegetables or local fruits. I started doing my own plant milk at home: oat or coconut. It’s much healthier and cheaper.

robusta coffee beans from java is 80k IDR per kg. and you need 12 gram for a cup of coffee. if you do the math, the price for each cup is less than 1k IDR. add sugar or condensed milk and the average cost is about 3k IDR. brewing coffee at home for yourself is always cheaper. business owner need to pay their employee and pay monthly bills including rent. that's why you will find a cup of coffee is expensive if you buy it from coffee shop. and my job is a barista so i can share our secret to you.

also, good diet for me would be steamed vegetables, boiled eggs, and chicken or another meat source but the cheapest one is chicken. try to skip the rice. it's kinda hard for indonesians to skip the rice but you can start with gado gado.

almost forgot to tell you but matcha powder is about 100k per 500g. and you only need 10gram per cup. that's 2k IDR per cup. let's count the milk next. it's about 22k IDR for 1liter of fresh milk. you will need 160 or 170ml and that's about 3500k IDR per cup. yes now you know milk is the most expensive ingredients here.

It's the same in Europe. During the pandemic, with a salary of 4000€ was more or less enough for a family of 4 members. Now, we have to set an stric weekly budget or else, we can't even save at the end of the month. Inflation is the invisible tax but the one that you feel the most...

    So quick tip
You can make tofu out of lots of cheap kinds of beans, peas and lentils (canned ones too)
If you do it right it costs basically nothing and it absorbs the flavour of whatever you're cooking it in,
So you can replace half your meats and still retain similar sized portions, calories and protein

Rising inflation all over the world is a matter of concern. When I see rising inflation in my neighboring countries, I feel what a difficult time they are going through in life. Being a working class salaried person, inflation affects me a lot. As salaries increase, so does inflation.

Why Singapore media focus on daily challenges of Indonesians or Indonesia? Is it to justify the rising cost in Singapore? 🤔

    • @tangt4860

With rising costs the average Singaporean & retirees with no recurring income will find that they limited finance is getting less purchasing power. When the 18% increase kicks in in 2024 & 2025 cost of living will increase more than the 18%. Hope the Sg govt have a more compassionate heart for retirees, those in low income brackets and average income earners and just provide more significant amount of rebates and higher amounts of cost of living vouchers but also reduce the hawker centers rentals, etc to effectively alleviate financial woes.

Population growth has peaked since the 1989. Every year since then the increase has been ever smaller and smaller. Just look at fertility rate at developed countries. South Korean women only birthed 0.8 child on average, the start of population decline. If not enough food to feed the population then why european countries pass laws to make farming more expensive and some out right ban.
