- For anyone who has watched the movie Gettysburg, one of the most memorable figures is General George Pickett, who was played by the talented Stephen Lang. Lang's illustrious career has also included films such as Public Enemies, Tombstone & Avatar. He was also a major contributor to the overall experience at the Adams County Historical Society's "Beyond the Battle Museum" in Gettysburg. In this episode, we're tagging along with Stephen as he walks the museum for the first time. We're also checking out some rare artifacts that were brought in by the West Point Museum. Much to see!

I loved Stephen Lang as Gen Stonewall Jackson in Gods and Generals 2003
Got to spend time with Mr. Lang while filming God's and Generals. Great man and a great Jackson.
His performance as General Jackson was a revelation, holy smokes Mr Lang was BRILLIANT.
I love Gods and Generals. I want them to make The Last Full Measure so badly
Shocking movie but great actor.
Yeah right dude
Great movie have it in my collection!
Stephen is a real history buff. He came to DC one time to celebrate lincoln's birthday. Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks J.D., when you can't get to the history, J.D. brings the history to us.
Love Stephen Lang. Great actor. Love the West Point artifacts. The field glasses of General Warren is the most important artifact. With those glasses he changed the outcome of the battle, the war, and American history.
The battle could have been won more than a few times by the Confederates. Little Round Top is overrated. All in all it was Lee's worst fought battle.
Nice, he changed American history so it can become the great country it is today! What a total hero!
... What a shithole of a country
Amen.
Mr. Lang is a great, great actor! Always riveting in his performances.
No one played Doc Holladay better than Val Kilmer in Tombstone. I agree, AWESOME movie.
How many have their been exactly? Val was the best that I saw too.
Nobody stole as many scenes [every one he was in] or uttered as many iconic tag lines as Val Kilmer.
As for most historically accurate Doc, that probably goes to Dennis Quaid.
"Maybe poker just isn't your game, Ike. I know. Let's have a spelling contest!"
A question I ask myself, would I have The Stones to do that? To go out with the 1st Minnesota Knowing it was suicide? Like They Knew. To march across that field with Pickett's Division? Knowing it was suicide? Like They Knew.
The courage of those men always astounds me.
The 1st Minn knew but not so much Picketts rank and file.
Sense of duty and honor has changed over the years.
When family and friends were right there with you in the lines, it was hard to not do your duty or be seen as a coward by said family and friends.
@@KingofDiamonds85
True.
One must always admire the courage that those men possessed, I always have, to be sure...
"General Lee....I have no Division."
But generally, he does

He was so good in that movie.. Picket
Such a powerful part of that movie!
Got no respect for Lee anymore.
Very cool to see Steven Lang's reaction and how proud Andrew was about what the ACHS accomplished with the museum. Glad to see you back 👍
His depiction of Ike in Tombstone is so awesome. One of those movies you basically have to watch if it comes on tv. Mandatory viewing.
100%
It's amazing how much of a talent Stephen Lang is. His role as Ike in Tombstone was such a contrast compared to his roles as Pickett and Jackson. Both were war heroes in their own right while Ike was the drunken cowardly "cur." Mr. Lang is BRILLIANT.
Yes !!!!
They tried to tell Stephen the tour was over but he responded "Law don't go around here, savvy?"
When I heard Stephen Lang speak at the beginning of the museum, it brought tears to my eyes. Very moving!
I ran across Stephen Lang years ago in Gibsland, Louisiana. He was the nicest most down to earth guy. He even came over to meet my then wife, dad and mom. I'll always he a fan of his!
Very professional and well done. When he plays Ike in Toombstone, he looks much shorter than he does in person. The movie Toombstone just had its 30 year reunion last month. It was held in Toombstone, Arizona. From the interviews I have seen with Mr Lang, he seems very genuine and personable.
Val Kilmer should have won an Oscar
Thank you so much for such an amazing video, some of my friends from the 72nd Pennsylvania took part in the recent 160th Reenactment Gettysburg battle recently. It is great that Stephan Lang has taken so much interest in Gettysburg and the Civil War .His contribution as an actor and to the Museum is very much appreciated in the Education of Civil War history .
I'm sure he doesn't remember me, but I was fortunate enough to meet Stephen on the sets of both Gettysburg and God's And Generals. Absolutely wonderful individual.
I can't think of a comment any better than the ones i just read from all these nice people, so i'll just say thank you History Underground for sharing with us these videos especially those who wish we could spend more time in Gettysburg and as for myself i always learn more every time i watch......Stephen Lang seems to be such a gentleman and obviously a great actor.
🙏🏼
As a Vietnam veteran, my first visit to Gettysburg we took the bus tour and I was overwhelmed by the extent of the battle. I had no idea. Hope all Americans get to visit it and see how much was paid for our country. We can't let this country go.
Thank you and Steven Lang, best Stonewall Jackson ever! “Gods and Generals”. Been going to Gettysburg for the last 7 years and still haven’t seen everything… always sometime new. Keep the Gettysburg Spirit alive!
Absolutely one of the best people, Stephen Lang gets it and what it means to give history a voice and for that I say thank you. Keep up the good work JD!
👍🏻
Ike Clanton !!! You fiend !!! You Villian!!! What a brilliant actor.
Steven brought so much to rendering the personalities of the civil war to life to re-invigorate interest in the topic, and for that, he has made a massive cultural impact, as have you my history-loving brother.
I’m a Virginian now living in the south of France rather than south of Richmond, but these reports help me feel like I’m almost there :)
Many thanks to all the passion and work you share for us, and I hope you have recovered from the theft in Greece and are as driven as always to share your energy with us civil war geeks :)
Bravo and thanks again!
He is really good at everything. His portrayal of Picket made me a fan but when he took on the role of Stonewall Jackson he was truly amazing. It's so cool that he involves himself like many of the BOB guys. The museum looks awesome. Thank you JD 👍🏼😎
Great vid JD. Picked up my nephew, a cadet at West Point a year ago and had two hours to go through their fantastic museum! If you go there and are musically inclined also visit the site of the Woodstock festival in nearby Bethel.
Stephen is so cool. And even though the movie Gettysburg was made a long time ago it's still an excellent movie today because the work for me was taken from the book killer angels. It brought those men to brilliant life. And I truly feel even though it is just a movie, All the information we have about the Civil War and about the soldiers and generals, when you go to a battlefield all that makes your experience so much better. 😊 I think the Civil War is one of the most important times in our country and we are still dealing with the problems from its failures today. And that these battlefield should always be protected. And I ask that everyone look at the lens of history through the context in which the time it happened. Confederates are not traitors to modern day Americans. They lived a different life than we do. But both sides respected each other for the suffering they shared in the end. And please never forget out of many, We Are One people undivided. It's true that out of many states We Are One, But that's not the total point of that. It is each of us as individuals that make us up one whole country. And we should be careful to trust anyone who seeks to divide us against each other. Because these battlefields and their dead have already decided that question.
Stonewall Jackson was his best role in Civil War films.
Cant wait to see that museum
Love Stephen Lang! Thanks for the video JD!
I am a West Point Class of 2015 graduate - the amount of history at West Point (and the West Point Museum) is endless! Highly recommend possibly going and making a series out of it, I think you'd really enjoy it. Many many important historical figures are buried at West Point's cemetery as well.
Love Stephen Lang amazing Actor
Awesome actor and this channel is one of the best on TH-cam!!
Stephen done awesome job as Stonewall jackson in Gods and Generals and Pickett in Gettysburg!!
Beautifully done as always, J.D. Thank you.
In the first ten seconds of the video my jaw dropped.
My cousin was at Barlow's Knoll with the 153rd Pennsylvania Volunteers and got wounded in the stomach. Nobody ever really know how -- but he had medical complications for his whole life and his whole personality changed after the war. Some said it was a bayonet, others a bullet. Later generations would have diagnosed him with PTSD.
Gettysburg ruined his life.
Such a tragic and haunting place.
Splendid to see Aaron Rowland ( formerly Pvt. Rowland of the 36th Illinois Volunteer infantry Regiment (reenacted), doing well and thank you for your real service.
As a artillerist I really appreciate your video starting with a bang.
For the reason that you were involved in the civil war and I as a Dane had ancestors fighting against the German army in 1864 it feels like we have a seldom kinship in using the same type of weapons and tactics for the era..
And shout out to Mr Lang. Looking good as always and thanks for your work on historical movies and other great initiatives.
We have a similar exhibition near the battlefield of our fateful defeat to Bismarcks' answer to our political problems back then.
We eventually got the lost land back in 1920 after the First World War, but by election instead of bloody conflict.
Today, we enjoy a great friendship with our neighbors to the south, and I, for one, is fortunate to know the German language as my second language, so I kinda have a wider sense of what happened on both sides.
Great job as always. It was great to meet you at the seminary program. I'm looking forward to when you do some more revolutionary war videos and when you come to NJ, it would be my pleasure to show you around the Battle of Monmouth.
How surreal to see the man behind the voice standing listening to his words.
What I remember most about the movie was his huge smile as Pickett. CLASSIC!
I loved Stephen Lang since I saw him in a movie called Band of the Hand. My stepfather had family who saw him in a play. Talked to him later. Said he was extremely warm and inviting.
Fascinating! What a wonderful job you did presenting this material to us. Absolutely loved it!
glad your channel is back on
True valuable and entertaining content. You should be so proud of what you do.
I have missed seeing him everytime I'm in gettysburg. He is my favorite actor. I wish there was a way to find out when he is coming there so I could meet him.
such a renowned actor giving his blessings on such a wonderful place, as to remember a time in our history!
It’s refreshing to see an individual who plays Civil War parts that really enjoys the history of it as much as all of us do and not that he was picked for a part and then just moves on because it’s a job. Well done…..
Love Stephen Lang. He was amazing as both Pickett and Jackson.
I remember hearing Mr Lang reading the Gettysburg Address he did an excellent job that brought tears just hearing it.
Stephen Lang , one of my favourite actors !!
Great job, JD! Loved this video. Feeling highly motivated to get to Gettysburg asap.
Definitely a museum I’ll add to my bucket list. I’m happy to see Steven LangMs contribution to the continuing education at Gettysburg.
That little area with Thaddeus Stevens is SUCH A HIDDEN GEM! I almost need to go see that chair and those books, such amazing rare tidbits of such an awesome historical figure who is less known but probably one of the best stories
What a special museum!
Is my incentive to finally travel to see Gettysburg.
Can’t wait !!! 😎
Have fun!
Wow Mr. Lang seems genuinely impressed!!✌️🇺🇲
I love Mr. Lang, a remarkable actor. Thank you so much for this video!
We went there today. The caught in the crossfire was cool. Going in the house was very realistic. You feel the vibrations from the cannon fire and fighting. You hear the voices of the soldiers. To realize the citizens of Gettysburg were stuck in their cellars for two to three days and then to come out and see the carnage and destruction is unimaginable. A lot to see at this museum.
Stephen Lang was absolutely amazing and gallent as Pickett. Tom berringer also amazing
Thank you for this video. I visited during the 160th. Video gave me goosebumps just as my exciting visit to the museum
great video and history lesson. Lang made a perfect Pickett in Gettysburg. i remember it well!! thanks JD
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing
Really cool and super interesting. Looking forward to visiting the Museum this summer
Great video, one of my favorites. Love Stephen Lang.
Thanks for persevering. Your work is great.
Also, WOW!
Just got back from Gettysburg. Spent weekend there and visited the museum. My daughter actually slept through the room believe it or not 😆. Also experienced the WW2 museum. Was amazing. Wouldn't of known about either if wasn't for you JD. Thank you for sharing these places in your videos.
What a fantastic tour and history lesson.
Love Mr Langs work. Under rated actor.
Oh that’s awesome! Always a fav of mine from Band of the Hand to Don’t Breathe and The Hard Way!!
Wonderful that you were able to be there for the 160th Anniversary.
Look forward to the museum next visit…
Stephen Lang was convincing playing Stonewall Jackson and made me appreciate Jackson's character and faith.
Stephen Lang is an Actor. That has done a film there. So. His input was great. And the West Point artifacts saw most of them on the 160 Series of Videos. Grants bar from Vicksburg was something I had not seen. Grant was from Galena Illinois. Been there many a time. Had Scouting jamboree’s there. Plus my grandparents lived there. Thanks JD for this thoughtful tour.
❤️💯👍
To The History Traveler: That was Totally Fascinating and I'm just Completely Overwhelmed by the Thoroughness of Your Video. I'M First going to Apologize for forgetting Your Names, meaning the Narrator of the Video. I'M now & always have had trouble Remembering them.
Back to the Video, & Episode. IT was Fantastic, Mr Stephen Lang, has always been a Favorite Celebrity, of Mine. Especially Since His Portrall of that Dashing Martinet General George Pickett in The Ted Turner Network, Production of the Film, GETTYSBURG and His Role in God's and General's as well. He is a True Entrepreneur of The Acting Profession. Quite Honestly too Me everything He's Done is just so Believable and Phenomenal? IT's like He's Taken Ones Soul, into that Character's Soul. He's GREAT.
As for You Recently being in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. For the 160th Anniversary? WoW 😣😳 is that Not Fantastic as well? For Me it's been a Lifetime Dream 😜🙂 too Some Day, Visit the Battlefield. But also Travel further up North too Blooming Valley, Pennsylvania. To the Local Cemetery, where My late Father's Side of Our Family, is Buried There. That Last Name is WAID, & from prior Family History's, had a rather long Tenure of Duration in That Region. So as I Really Hope too Accomplish this Quest, or Venture, In the Next Few Years? Of Course the Battlefield's of Those Region's will be Part of the Itinerary For Certain. Well I've Said Enough. So Thank You so Much for Having The Privilege of Watching & Hearing Your Episodes. They Are Fascinating as I Said. May God Bless US All & Keep Us Safe.
Wyoming, Robert, 🇨🇦🇺🇲🇨🇦🇺🇲🇨🇦🇺🇸👍🤔👀🤔👍🙏🙏🙏🙏.

"You tell 'em, Ike..I'm coming, and Hells coming with me!"-Kurt Russell to Stephen Lang in Tombstone
Sometimes its hard to believe this man plays such intimidating characters, after watching Tombstone.
Love that movie.
Love it. Thanks for everything.
Great video!! Mr. Lang was a great cop show...Crime Story
That was very cool! Thanks JD!
Top drawer as always , Unsure if asked before by others . maybe you have or you've been there and i've missed that video .. Do you also visit and feature the locations in the other Civil War film ... Glory
Thanks JD - was there on June 26th :) .
When I did the immersive experience last year, I sat in a chair...and wondered as I sat there...just how many of the bullets that were illuminating around me would have actually struck me. Scary. Between that thought and watching the shadows of the Confederates running by the window in combination were incredibly scary.
Great video JD!!!
What a great actor.
Awesome JD as always
Mr. Lang is Awesome!
Stephen Lang. Wonderful man actor, an human being
Mannnn I live right down the road (past caledonia). Wish I would have known he was gonna be there. I visit Gettysburg often, took my college courses there, and it’s an odd feeling being there. The town is frozen in time, a lot of the shops are set in civil war era, and you can still find bullet holes in the houses. Standing on the fields where thousands of men gave their lives is surreal. If you haven’t come to Gettysburg, you need to.
One of my favorite actors of today.
That was awesome!
Well done. As a Hoosier I noted the car with the University of Notre Dame plate in the parking lot and the words found on the flag at the end.
Outstanding ❤️❤️❤️
Have a good week JD.
Great stuff……Again!
Awesome video JD
I haven't been to this one, but been to Pamphlin Park. That one really life like. Worth a trip IMHO.
Stephan Lang added so much depth to Pickett.
