  • Doing book art usually requires a lot of mathematical calculations. This method is much easier. Print a copy of the word or design with vertical stripes that are used as a template for folding the pages.
    I wrote a book to explain this art in more detail. You can buy my book "Folded Book Art Made Easy" on Amazon: amzn.to/2uksNYQ It comes with 10 free striped patterns!
    Neste tutorial eu mostro um modo mais facil de fazer arte dobrando as paginas de um livro. Primeiro tem que fazer um padrao com listas verticais em Photoshop.

    Buy my book on Amazon. It includes 10 FREE PATTERNS: amzn.to/2Z3NSUT
    Browse ready-made patterns in my Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/PompandWhimsy

    If you don't have Photoshop, you can use my pre-striped pages to make a pattern. My website www.diypics.com/simplified-fol... has links to striped patterns for different size books. Just print a word on top of the stripes (or draw something) and follow the folding directions as above.

      I am guessing you'd use this in as a background in photoshop with the text layer on top and use opacity to merge into the background lines.
      Then maneuver the text to match the lines. I have no idea really until I try it. Okay I tried it and I still can't get 40 lines per letter. I think I will go and lie down in a darkened room :)

    Hi, i am doing some research into folded book art as I would like to give it a go myself. Your tutorials, so far, have been the ones I have understood most clearly. However, I do have to say that I still found it rather confusing...by way of lack of description for future projects and explanation of why you do things etc. It may very well be a case of that I am the one at fault and struggling. But I found that I have many questions that aren't answered by the tutorials, both here on youtube and online elsewhere. I am terrible at maths (which could be why I am struggling) and I have no clue on how to figure out how to size the words/letters for books. I would like to gain the knowledge to do this side of it so that I know for future projects as opposed to relying on online printable patterns which I have seen, but not tried.

    • @DIYMarta10
      @DIYMarta10 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're in luck. The H is one of the easiest letters to fold. If you print it out vertically and fold it vertically, then there are no splits at all. You'll see once you start folding it. Good luck!

    would love to try this. Do I need to worry about getting it centered in the book? Any why did you mark the edges of the book with a marker?

    • @Diypics
      @Diypics  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good questions, Mel. No, you don't need to worry about word placement. But you do need to make sure the top of the word page is folded back so you can "hook" it to the top of the book when you're folding each page. That will maintain uniformity of placement. As for the marking, I did that so I could see where to make my top fold end. My nice came up with a better method--indenting the top and bottom of the book with a knife so each page has a notch to serve as guide for the top and bottom folds. Hope that's clearer than it sounds to me. :)

    I viewed you tutorial and read most of the comments/replies below. I see that for a solo letter you said to use 2 pages per line ok. My book is 732 pages and the pages are 9" tall by 6 3/4"wide. My letter has 290 lines x2 pages =580 pages 732 - 580 leaves 152 pages left over divided by 2 is 76 pages on each side and starts 1" below the top of the page and ends 1" above the bottom is this ok? Should I fold the extra pages in half or should I redo my letter print with more divisions? I was just guessing on the size of my letter on the page as I had to get a more sturdy book today. I wish your tutorial had more precise directions on figuring the size of your letter compared to the book and number of lines for the letter. I just used 40 lines per inch of grid I think? Whew! that's a big comment... Thx Kat

    • @Diypics
      @Diypics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you're on the right track. There are SO many variations in height, number of pages, etc, that it would be impossible to do a comprehensive tutorial. Having said that, I do try to use as many pages as possible. You just have to keep going back to the drawing board and play with using more stripes per inch.
      Good job figuring this out!

    • @Diypics
      @Diypics  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK, if you have a 300 page book, then you have 150 foldable pages. Since you need at least 35 folds per letter, you can do a 4-letter word with that book.

    Muito bacana seu trabalho! Só fiquei com uma dúvida: em letras como o "B", como eu faria as dobraduras? Na letra "M" eu vou intercalando uma página acima e uma página abaixo, mas em letras como o "B", isso não seria possível. Eu tenho que recortar a página no caso da letra "B"? Obrigado!!

    • @Diypics
      @Diypics  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, sim. Não expliquei esse problema. O que se faz com as letras E, S, B, etc. é o seguinte-- quando chegar à parte que tem tres níveis, dobra uma página por nível, movendo para a seguinte listra em cada nível. Nunca de corta uma página.
      Espero que isso esclareça...

    Hi, Thanks for sharing your work.
    Wana really try this but just wondering 1. are you folding grey lines at the bottom and black lines at the top.
    2. Also do you always start from the bottom level?
    To my understanding
    1. When there is only one level, fold black line then grey line then black and so on....
    2. When there are two levels, fold black bottom line then grey top line then black bottom line then grey top line and so on....
    Am I correct??? Please Please advice.
    Thanks

    • @DIYMarta10
      @DIYMarta10 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You start from whichever point is furthest left. If top and bottom are exactly lined up, then pick whichever. It won't matter. Also you simply move forward one stripe for each level (top, middle, bottom) no matter which color stripe you're on when you start.

  • @keystonemason
    @keystonemason 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does the number of pages in the book not change the number of the grid pattern? eg) 40 columns for 40 pages? for a big book it wouldn't be centered i would think... Can you elaborate?

    • @Diypics
      @Diypics  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only if you want to use all the pages. You can either decide how many folds per letter, and then find a book that will give you at least that many pages (and center the word), or divide the pages into the number of letters and make your grid accordingly.
      P.S. Would you be interested in watching a live broadcast of this tutorial? There are so many questions viewers are asking that I thought I'd gather everyone and have a live question/demo/answer time. Let me know and I'll send an invite when I do the broadcast.
      Thanks

    I saw the Idea of making a folded book on robs personal channel (Thread banger studios) and he made it out to be supper complicated, but after watching their channel for awhile I've realized rob makes a lot of things look supper complicated. I make a lot of little origami craft things because I like to include them in my photography projects, I use Photoshop daily so I'm not worried about that part just the actual folding I don't want to sacrifice a book to realize I'm way past my skill level. is it hard to master? if I were to try it should I have multiple books on standby in case I mess it up or is it the sort of thing that when you get it you get it?

    • @Diypics
      @Diypics  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ElloMyNameIsCrazy I would practice with one book. That should be enough. You will definitely get better and better at it, but by the sounds of it, you already know the art of folding, so I'm betting your first work will be about as good as mine are after many projects. Go for it! You can buy a ready-made pattern to practice on. Follow my Etsy link on my channel to see if there's something you'd like. All my patterns come with a free heart pattern which is the easiest to fold.

      Thanks for the fast reply! and for the advice I have another month or so before schools back in session and my photography teacher is known for reusing topics so I brainstorm them during the summer, he always does "Hidden Heart" so making one with a heart would be a good fit. When He gives it out (Because he checks the time stamps on our photos to know if we did it ahead of time and if we did it doesn't count for the grade) Ill head over to the used book store and get like 3 books then maybe Ill be ready to try something else. I'm going to bookmark your Etsy page for now =)

      As for making stripes inside the images, you could just put the image on top and leave the background full of stripes, then use the background stripes as your template. I've never done that, but it should work exactly the same as having the image with stripes. I hope that helps.

      Fold the top part, go to the next page and fold the bottom of the NEXT stripe. Some people cut the page in half and fold both top and bottom of the same stripe. I don't cut anything.

    Hi
    Thanx for your reply. In photoshop, when I zoom the letter to erase alternate lines, the letter gets very distorted at the edges. How to deal with that?

    • @DIYMarta10
      @DIYMarta10 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh dear. You should watch my video on how to make stripes automatically in Photoshop.
      As for your distortion issue, increase the resolution of your image.

    • @Diypics
      @Diypics  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I just made some striped pages you can use as your background. Check out my site for different book size patterns: www.diypics.com/simplified-folded-book-art/ . How to use: if you have a book with 500 pages, download the pattern for a 480-page book, print a word on it with no spaces between the letters--or even hand print a word--then follow the folding instructions in my video.

    When folding the letter E you folded the top, skipped 3 lines folded the middle, skipped 3 lines and folded the bottom. Why did you skip? I want to make one with the word Family I have a 555 pg book and I don't know if that is big enough.

    • @Diypics
      @Diypics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Julie Wilson I just moved forward obe stripe. You never fold more than one level on a single stripe. And your book is the perfect size for "family" but you'll nees a custom pattern for it. See my Etsy shop for custom patterns.

    • @Diypics

      That's where I wanted the fold to end at top and bottom. Some people fold it all the way to the spine, in which case you don't need to mark anything.
