For all the music theory people out there the hirojoshi is based off the natural minor scale but can be also substituted into harmonic minor and hungarian minor playing
Man i have been using this mode for a long time and haven’t even realized it, and this video will surely help me get a better understanding of it thank you so much
I needed this lesson, but I didn't even know that I needed it until today! Thanks! I'd love a lesson on slide guitar as I cannot get the technique down to save my life, but if that ain't your thing, it's all good! I will watch your lessons anyway, lol.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) You are correct, slide guitar is not something I play or teach, but if you liked this video, check out more free video guitar lessons here: tomhess.net/FreeVideoGuitarLessons.aspx
If I'm getting this order right..... 1st hirajoshi mode: Minor/aeolian 2nd: locrian/diminished (also minor) 3rd: major/ionian 4th: Minor/Dorian substitute? (not totally dorian by the looks?) 5th: lydian/major I noticed there isn't substitute for Phrygian and Mixolydian? Maybe no need for them... that 4th mode 5 note octave pattern you showed seems to cover them from what I'm gathering. Thanks for this video :)
To practice like in the video, focus on the concepts I talk about in terms of using the scale in music. :) You can use the hirajoshi scale over any backing track in any natural minor or harmonic minor key.
This Guitar Scale is awe.... And I love Jason Becker music... Hey Tom can you do a video just like this But with The Harmonic Minor...........SCALES ....PLZ thank man... You are AWE...........
I don't understand your question, Emma. You can play part of the scale or the whole scale. You can create a song or solo out of this scale too. Nobody is saying you can't :)
Martys style and sound is a treasure.

I use this for the pentatonic phrygian mode... great scale...
Btw if you want the whole scale to connect, in mode 4 you can play the shape (If your root is B) 6: 2-3, 5: 2-4, 4: 0-4, 3: 0-4, 2: 2-3, 1: 2-3
