Man i have been using this mode for a long time and haven’t even realized it, and this video will surely help me get a better understanding of it thank you so much
I needed this lesson, but I didn't even know that I needed it until today! Thanks! I'd love a lesson on slide guitar as I cannot get the technique down to save my life, but if that ain't your thing, it's all good! I will watch your lessons anyway, lol.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) You are correct, slide guitar is not something I play or teach, but if you liked this video, check out more free video guitar lessons here: tomhess.net/FreeVideoGuitarLessons.aspx
If I'm getting this order right..... 1st hirajoshi mode: Minor/aeolian 2nd: locrian/diminished (also minor) 3rd: major/ionian 4th: Minor/Dorian substitute? (not totally dorian by the looks?) 5th: lydian/major I noticed there isn't substitute for Phrygian and Mixolydian? Maybe no need for them... that 4th mode 5 note octave pattern you showed seems to cover them from what I'm gathering. Thanks for this video :)
To practice like in the video, focus on the concepts I talk about in terms of using the scale in music. :) You can use the hirajoshi scale over any backing track in any natural minor or harmonic minor key.
This Guitar Scale is awe.... And I love Jason Becker music... Hey Tom can you do a video just like this But with The Harmonic Minor...........SCALES ....PLZ thank man... You are AWE...........
I don't understand your question, Emma. You can play part of the scale or the whole scale. You can create a song or solo out of this scale too. Nobody is saying you can't :)
Martys style and sound is a treasure.
This scale is sick, definitely adding to the arsenal.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge as well as practicing tips, Tom!
My pleasure, Sammy! :)

The direction picking stuff is really cool
Btw if you want the whole scale to connect, in mode 4 you can play the shape (If your root is B) 6: 2-3, 5: 2-4, 4: 0-4, 3: 0-4, 2: 2-3, 1: 2-3

I immediately thought of George Lynch upon hearing your licks
I’ve never been more infatuated with a scale as I am now
Question - please tell me the 4th mode is substitute of which scale? Mr. Hess - thanks for this video!!! :-)
this sounds very similar to Javanese scales, I wonder if they are derived from the same historical root.
Could someone tell me where to get this backing track? or what the notes are
This is the same scale as the Ethiopian Tizita minor scale!
Thanks Tom, I'd like to practice like in the video. Link to the backing track you used?
To practice like in the video, focus on the concepts I talk about in terms of using the scale in music. :) You can use the hirajoshi scale over any backing track in any natural minor or harmonic minor key.

I'm going to practice these scales, and reward myself with Sushi afterward 😋

Is there a topic on making your own licks on Scales? I was told I could do simple licks but I still don't know how.
Also very interesting video!
Yes, check out this video: tomhess.net/Video-Lesson-About-How-To-Improve-Your-Guitar-Licks

But why play almost the hole scale ? Why not making a song with a part of this scale and using more rhythm :-)
