  • Using a game from his chess.com Monthly review show GM Kraai offers an example of the most common mistake he's seen in his years of teaching - that players too willingly give away time.

Jesse is such an awesome teacher. I'm realizing now just how important it is for a coach/trainer to be able to openly critique as much of the play as possible in a way that isn't offensive or spiteful. You can tell Jesse wants this player to improve by any means necessary. I certainly wish I could afford to take a class. I don't think many other coaches would understand my particular situation - having my learning development wrecked by cheating.

That was great seeing how a coach thinks. thank you.

True, but most of it was over my head ad I failed to understand why some moves were bad.

It´s amazing that you review amateur games like this! Thanks a lot for your time and effort!

Many famous games include a loss of time, and teaching triangulation to lose a mpve just reinforces this concept. However, many endgames are lost by a tempo.

it's better when people post losses because there's more to learn, this was a good one. also Bxc3 made me cringe but the guy might not be an opening andy, could have just played c5 quickly without knowing about the whole pawn sac.

Umm... didn't really cover how to fix it, did it?

Interesting to hear you a GM's thoughts. At 17:30 you comment the bad Na6 move and also mentioned the good move c5 earlier in the game. But I'm not sure the black player understood why c5 was a good move. Maybe it was a move learned by heart, without understanding the purpose? I think learning opening moves by heart, without understanding is common problem with class players.
    Thanks for a good video!

or he just didn't realize c5 "blunders" a pawn. People build up these narratives oh he studies the opening thats why hes bad. But like, he's playing the kings indian. Aka the black london aka the opening beginners play when they dont want to memorize anything.

What indicated the h file wouldn’t be an issue? It looks dangerous optically

I think that at 22:03 he says the position is equal because of the maneuver Bc5-e7 defending both pawns. Is white able to force a win in this position?

Saychess (whose game we reviewed) thought the endgame was equal, but has now subjected it to a deep comp. analysis - comp agrees with GM Kraai :-0 white is lost

Repeat 50x time time time, miss why people lose time every time.
It's not about time. It's about understanding the basic principles of chess. The more you understand healthy & good moves, the less time you lose.

Why on earth do all Americans pronounce Maroczy as Moraksy [horrible] instead of Moratsy? You even don't read it correctly: "a" before "o".

I have embraced playing these positions as black based on Eugene mindset and I can tell it unnerves the opponent when I blast out the moves. They are like “hey I am supposed to be the one making you uncomfortable why didn’t you stop and think if you could prevent maroczy”

You should hear them "Scheveningen" variation. The most crazy things will happen.
Here in the Netherlands (though I'm not Dutch) they say that the word "Scheveningen" was used to distinguish real Dutch from infiltrating pretenders in wars.
Every country has a story like this I believe :). It's even in the Bible.
