    I ordered one of these. Made a couple of ‘upgrades’
    1) Ripped out all the electronics replaced them with some vintage Gibson stuff.
    2) Replaced the tuners with some nice Kluson reissues.
    3) Grabbed my pry bar and got rid of that crappy tailpiece and bridge.
    4) Didn’t like the feel of the shitty frets, so I took those off to prepare for some nice SS ones.
    5) Since I had the frets off, I decided to replace the fretboard with some nice ebony instead.
    6) Well, once I got the fretboard off, looked like the neck could use some work, so I heated up the joint, took it off and chucked it. Went with a Warmoth replacement.
    7) With the neck off, it looked like the body could use a little work too. So, I looked through my parts and found an old ‘69 body looking for a new home.
    I’ll be the first to admit that I thought those Chisbon’s were a total waste of money, but with a few upgrades and a couple extra bucks, I tell ya, mine looks and plays like a totally different guitar!!
    I can’t wait to order another one!! \m/, ,\m/

    I love watching Dave's encounters with guitars he doesn't like!! lmfao!!
    My Strat is still my #1 go-to just because it's so ridiculously simple & easy to "fix & setup" - but I've played the paint right off it and the frets look like they're all waving bye-bye, (I vibrato a lot without the bar so my frets have wider areas of wear instead of just a 'groove' under each string) - and even with proper relief, I still need my strings around 5/64~6/64 to avoid buzzing. -shrug-
    I'm not gonna bother taking my guitar to StewCrap or GuitardedCenter. I'll always look for someone like Dave - someone who actually cares about doing the job you're paying them to do.
    Cheers to you Dave!

    Great work as always Dave. I remember buying a fretboard from the Middle Kingdom a few years back (cost $10) and instead of shell used for the inlays they had routed deep pockets, put shiny paper in the bottom and then filled the pockets with clear epoxy. The whole thing was rough sanded so it wasn't obvious until I started polishing the board. I guess I got what I paid for. Nowadays some builders have improved but it's still a lottery.

  • @tjsogmc

    To each his own, I guess. It sure took a lot of work to make the guitar playable. This is what most people don't understand about cost vs. value. The cheaper the guitar (or any other product) retail price means that steps had to be skipped in production in order to bring down the cost. This is true for ANYTHING. When you pay the higher price, the finish work is already done for you. The lower cost items require you to do the finish work that wasn't done at the factory. When you add in YOUR time and effort, ask yourself if you really saved anything at the end of the day.
    Now consider the second hand market. There are tons of good deals out there where you can score big and get a quality item for less than the cost of a knock-off. I just bought a nearly brand new Ibanez 5 string bass with active pick-ups from Offer-Up for the grand sum of $30. I changed the strings ($30) and spent about an hour setting it up (say another $30), and there is NOTHING wrong with the guitar at all, it's perfect. So I've got less than $100 in time and labor in a brand name 5 string. I couldn't get a knock-off that cheap.

      Hey red. I’m generally 100% behind you except Gibson taught me otherwise. Not just me, but myriad members of the Les Paul forum who would receive their guitars with a HORRIFIC Plek job (more like no Plek job!), guitars that weren’t bugged out… I received my Historic Les Paul with a crack running up the back of the neck (under the finish). Times are changing. In some cases (rarely) you don’t get what you pay for, YMMV.

    You got to keep in mind these guitars are being compared to guitars that cost over $2,000 they are literally ten times cheaper than what they imitate. And doing a little bit of fret leveling intones pickup adjustment and customization of the nut it's pretty standard if you want any guitar to play to its fullest ability other than actual custom shop Guitar it will cost you more than the $2,000...

    • @josiahlee1982
      @josiahlee1982 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Eh...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to level frets. It's actually pretty easy if you have patience. I recently did to my 15 year old Ibanez rg370. It had literal grooves and flat frets from playing so much. I actually used TH-cam as a reference for how to make the tools. Check out gunsandguitars channel. Out of the whole process I would recommend a good crowning file but it absolutely can be done yourself for less than 50$.

    • @ahf5471
      @ahf5471 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josiah Lee the problems that these guitars face goes way beyond leveling frets. These guitars are playable in fits and starts and always require some modifying as the wood settles and kinks and bends. Buying a copy like this is an ongoing battle. Don’t kid yourself

    • @josiahlee1982
      @josiahlee1982 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Arthur H haha...your reading comprehension sucks. I never recommended buying a knockoff or that it wasnt work. But that's all it is, work. I was stating that you definitely can do a fret leveling job for less than 50$. Your time doing the work is most of the job. Not special tools. Plus a guitar like this is actually the perfect candidate to learn on if it's you got it cheap. Brand it a fake and go to town learning how to level and dress frets, change tuners, cut a new nut etc. Because you don't have to worry about messing it up any worse really. If you can't work on your own gear then that either makes you ignorant or incompetent...maybe both.

      @@ahf5471 They are not all the same. The earliest ones are almost always total junk. However, you can find a good maker or two, and the quality improves on some of them after they get returns or cancelled payments. However, it is very much a buyer beware situation, and the odds are definitely not in the buyer's favor. There are some videos of some decent Chibsons on youtube, though, if you look.

    I honestly don't know why people buy Chibson Les Pauls - unless they're trying to fool people. Les Paul type guitars by Harley Benton, Epiphone, ESP, PRS, and many more, are excellent! They're near the same price or a little bit more costly than a Chibson and have much better quality. They're also a fraction of the inflated price that Gibson charges. I've played both copies and actual Les Pauls in my 40 years of playing. Rarely is there a huge difference between a Gibson and a well-set-up copy.

    And you could've avoided all of this crap just by buying an Epiphone...

      Daniel Doran Great explanation, Daniel. I did know this but I always wondered why the hardware was different and obviously inferior. I've never bought a Chibson but I've played a few. My honest opinion is, they are spot on regarding dimensions, finish etc.
      But the pickups and wiring harness are where things start to go wrong. I have an Epiphone LP custom and a Gibson SG Standard. I'm obviously happy with both but there will always be the temptation to throw some cash at a Chibson to see what it's like. Lol

      @Daniel Doran Nonsense. Look at the wood inside the cavity. This was not made in the Epi factory, and this is garbage quality. Quit spreading myths, you don't know what you are talking about. My guess is you've never stepped foot in Asia, let alone China. This is a Gibson counterfeit made with inferior materials, with inferior craftsmanship and a severe lack of luthier knowledge. This guitar in this video will never, ever be as good as a $400 Epi let alone an $800 one.

      @Daniel Doran Utter BS. If you would've watched the video, you'd see that this banana-colored piece of hot-dog wood is still garbage even after Dave's excellent setup.

    All this diddling with the nut slots can be eliminated by just doing what most european makers do and include a zero fret when you slot the finger board to start with. If you have that then when you level the frets you level the zero fret with the rest of them. Then you only have to make sure that the slots are deep enough. In this situation it is almost impossible to commit the cardinal sin of cutting the slot to deep.
