Motocross Action dives in deep into the 2020 Supercross Champion Eli Tomac's new ride! Eli Tomac switched teams at the end of 2021 to Star Racing Yamaha on a YZ450F. Eli has a ton of speed and making the YZ look good so far. We met up with his mechanic Josh Ellingson to go over the top secret details of Eli Tomac's race bike. His YZ450F features a Rekluse clutch, custom footpegs, KYB hybrid forks, titanium brake tip, custom FMF guard, -10 back footpeg position, Dunlop spec tires, shaved brake housing, auxillary start button, and much much more! Props to Star Yamaha for giving us this much detail. I remember a couple years ago when HRC Honda wouldn't even give away their final drive gear ratio on Roczen's bike.
Tomac and Craig are shining examples of what STAR represents imo, great people with level heads producing more great people and champions through teamwork.
100%...I'm hoping they both win their respective class titles. Tho it should be a lot easier for Craig compared to how competitive the 450 class is this year...JA, Sexton, Kenny and Ferrandis all look very good and will battling Eli through the remaining 13 rounds.

Having worked with both Bob at ARC and Willy at LightSpeed for 15+ years, it warmed my heart to see some of their "goodies" on Tomac's factory steed. Both those companies have a ZERO compromise policy on production value and workmanship. If LightSpeed made cell phone cases, they would be the most perfect and sexy cases on the planet. Great stuff.
Yeah just saw this up close in Anaheim! No wonder the tech kept checking the throttle play while I was walking by the pits. The throttle play is very important for the mind-muscle connection these guys have so they know how much is needed to hit what on the tight tracks of supercross. Congrats on the win!
Round four Eli Tomac made it clear, he is definitely up to the task to fight for this championship. He looks more hungry than anyone out there he is a man on a mission ! ! Look out ET3 is coming hard !!

LOL those are not Pro Taper Grips, they are Renthal Full Waffle. I guess Eli likes the Renthals better and Star is chill enough to let him rock them even though they are sponsored by Pro Taper. I can def see why Star is the best team because they will let you do anything even if it's against sponsors. As long as it makes you a better rider, that is badass.
Anyways, I'm so stoked to see Eli be himself and enjoy racing. Looks like he's having a great time with his team and bike. It suits him well. I hope he can be champ again this year. Star def has the best team/bike.
Star really turn the bike around because in the past when Factory Yamaha handle the riders they are limited to change so the riders are not comportable with the handing of the bike, While on the other hand Star Racing gives the riders freedom on what ever they want to make to the bike to suit their style. of riding

That extra start button was a bad ass idea
I moved mine right down in that same general area when I first got my bike. Also eliminated the launch control button and moved the map control button to the headset frame area. It's already proven to be a good mod on more than one occasion I woulda blurred all that shit.

Star racing Yamaha’s championships and number of bikes running the Rekluse clutch made me get the radius kit for my 250sx smoker. I think they had 4/5 bikes running them at one point

Wow, very informative and never realized how these bikes are so rider specific and hand built. Is Star Racing considered Factory Yamaha? Or is that a separate entity? Need some clarification on that please?
Star is factory yamaha
They took over factory Yamaha. Dylan was only staying on Yamaha if star took over the 450s. They took the factory bike and shaved 10-12 pounds off of it and it is getting better and better. Star is the only reason Eli went there, he wanted to get away from a fully corporate team.

Great detailed walkaround funny i,m as old as Eli,s day Johnny T and have been doing alot of these tricks to my bikes for almost 25 years funny people hung shit on me back then throttle play is sooo important , is ET running tubes or mooses ?

All that effort and we have wrinkles in the seat cover. 🥴 No hate comms though, I know they put their heart and soul into these bikes. The seat cover wrinkles are just a pet peeve of mine.

What is a rough cost of tomac’s bike?
13/50 I did NOT expect that.. hell I run 14/52 on my little 250 but then again im slow AF and ride trails. I just assumed all 450s ran 14 front and somewhere 49-52 rear. I mean... don't they have enough power for a 14 tooth front?! I love running 14 front, gives me SOOO much drive and saves a few upshifts and the bike is easier to ride in low grip tracks.
I think they need as much torque as possible to seat bounce a triple coming out of a turn

Pushing the rear axle not only helps with handling it reduces drag by a few %

I think they ride like 95% in 2nd and 3rd, occasionally dip into 4th on long straights. I don't think they use 1st at all? Actually, they might run 4th in the whoops sometimes, too. This is from (vague) memory from over the years.

Back in the day Jimmy button and tim ferry had 1st gears removed and 5th was removed on the 426's for supercross. Ferry's 03 450 had only 3 gears aswell but they were 4spd already from the factory, very violent bikes during 03 and 04 even in stock trim.

Why does his bike seem like his chain is on the loose side?when you hear him landing you can actually hear alot of chain slap.and does that throw off the handling with 5 lbs floating around
