  • In this one we talk about jujubes a fruit I have become quite fond of. You can eat them green, red, shriveled or fully dried and you'll get a different fruit each time.

Interesting things about jujube trees. They fall into 2 groups in flowering habit... AM and afternoon/ PM. Any one flower only lasts 1 day, but the tree can flower for 60 days.
The parts that bear the fruit and fall off are called branchlets. On the branch itself, little "pine cone" looking structures are what gives rise to the fruiting parts. You can easily spot them once you know what you are looking for.

I live in northern Mexico and we are in the desert here. Jujubes LOVE the heat. All jujubes here, come the end of summer, will be loaded. You are right, they go through different stages while ripening and then drying. My wife likes then with a little red but mostly green. I like my fruit sweet so I like them 60-75 % red and this stage they will be as sweet as they get and still crunchy. It's like biting into sugar. Once they go full red they soften and start loosing moisture till shriveled. Hardiest fruit tree in the world. Can handle 20 - 120 degree temp swings from winter to summer. Thrives in drought conditions. You will never see someone watering a jujube here. They don't need it. Too much water they'll grow like weed. From the descriptions I have seen the variety grown here is the contorted So. Tops to 12 ft, won't go over a meter from tip to tip on oposing branches. Looks like a gigantic Bonsai tree if that makes sense.

Thanks for covering jujubes in a video, I've ordered a Li and a Lang from a specialist grower here in the UK, hopefully they will be delivered in December, I should think the plants will be small

Hello, I just bought a sugar cane jujube yesterday. How big of a container should I plant it in permanently? What type of soil or fertilizer should I use? Thank you.

When they are dried it is Chinese red date. We remove the pits and boil with dried black bean. And drink as tea. It's good for people with anemia

You honey jar is an early variety and the sweetest of them all.
Not sure about Honey Jar, but I know that some Jujube varieties could easily handle extreme sub zero temperatures. If you have the space, put them in the ground, several years down the road, you’ll be glad you did.

I usually pick my jujubes when just the bottom of the fruit turns brown/red. That's when they taste the best to me.

Update please. I have my jujubes in half barrel size pots and was told they can't be grown in pots very long. I've only had them in pots for a year and I think I need to put them in the ground already.

@@RossRaddi Thank you for your reply and your helpful vids. They are still in pots? Do you trim the branches and roots like a bonsai? (I don't think I'll be able to keep mine in pots.) Also, what do you do with the root suckers? I'm new to your channel and would like to see an update video on these. I'm getting into figs too. Growing in central Arizona.

    • @LuminousTurtle2029

@@everyone8043Late reply but if the suckers bother you, just prune them off. if you're having trouble with the main tree not fruiting, leave the suckers on and their flowers will help pollinate the main plant. They can be grown in pots. Their roots tend to be invasive, especially if the roots are disturbed. If you put them in ground, don't plant them near water pipes. Before you plant them in ground, think about how you'd feel if they started sprouting up everywhere, because they might. And sucker plants tend to be thorny. If you have enough room to plant them safely, then they should be fine in ground as long as there's good drainage where you want to put them. Good luck!

@@LuminousTurtle2029 thank you. I actually still have them in their pots and they are now budding out. Most seem to be doing ok. They seem to draw wasps to them which really cut up the spring foliage. I love the fruit.

One thing to keep in mind is that jujube seeds do not breed true, meaning the fruit on the new tree will not be like that of the parent tree.
