Serj is such a creative vocalist. I really like the fast vibrato and chant influences in some of his lines. He goes from clear tone to distorted screams, it adds so much emotion and interest to his work. I also love the harmonics and blending of the background vocals, never a boring day with SOAD
Serj’s vocal ability is non-human. He has such a wide range that he can comfortably sing powerfully in both the high registers, as well as the low registers. I will never understand the ridiculously over inflated egos that are keeping this band from creating new music. How can grown men allow personality weaknesses such as these keep them from creating the magic that they are capable of.
I love every single song they have their voices are so unique and beautiful, from singing to screaming and the guitar and drums, they’re one of my favorites bands
7:24 Fun fact In the 2005-2006 tour, they tune all drop C songs to drop C#, except Question. So this song, Serj can even hit E5. Serj can only hit this note just in that tour. Even before that on the original tune, he can't hit Eb5. I wonder why
Well the whole point of experience in vocals is that you learn to ease into higher notes rather than straining, most of Serj's early career is shouting to get the extreme notes (and I'm not even judging him for it, it has unique and immense power), during the Mesmerize/Hypnotize era his technique is much cleaner (although not flawless). Still, the toxicity songs were NOT made for drop c#, you can only do demanding stuff like that for so much.
@@ptr_does_music7042 you can either take my word for it or not but there is 100% attainable techniques for just about everything you hear that man do that ensure minimal to no damage to one's voice. I know because I spent a long time perfecting them as well to be able to perform them as Serj in my SOAD tribute band. Besides the belief I have behind that point, everyone has a unique range that differs depending on what they're doing in the vocal, no? So I wouldn't jump to say that anything is specifically "not meant" for a higher key. It just makes it more of a craft and singer-specific and maybe you and I are not on that list. In all fairness, I'll happily point out myself that - knowing that Hypnotize/Mezmerize were both recorded entirely in drop C# - my bassist (sings the role of Darin in the band) and I decided without hesitation that rather than have to retune or swap out guitars just to (most-likely) tire our voices out early on, that instead we would keep everything in drop C. Kill two birds. So in that alone, I sympathize with what you're saying indirectly but don't necessarily agree. Though it'as possible I may have misunderstood what you were trying to get a cross there, which I would also happily admit if I found that out to be the case, lol.
@@thesalameandercreative7140 well let me reword my argument: most songs on toxicity are very demanding (high notes) and shouty for Serj's own standards, he clearly had trouble maintaining his vocal quality during their extensive tours for toxicity, so moving these songs a semitone higher only strains you more. So yeah it's more of a Serj problem rather than the vocal line's problem, it all boils down to the vocalist's technique and endurance. And while I'd like to believe that every sound can be emulated in a sustainable way, our voices are all different and gradually change, so you can expect that at some point the old soad songs will have to be sung a bit differently
He's a brilliant vocalist I agree. And I do love Daron's voice, but when they both sing together it's so beautiful..like towwards the end of chop suey.. Great video putting it all together 😍💕 (omg you kinda covered it haha)
It’s the metal into rap into breathless emotion into heavy ass screaming, with Darren screaming out and calling, rinse and repeat of Chop Suey…. It may be one of their most popular, but it is for a reason. That song is beautiful. Technically, it’s a fantastic showcase of Systems style, instrumental and vocal abilities.
Didn't realize you already made a system of a down video... But pls... serj tankian solo video... his solo albums are also as dope as the system albums Or video dedicated Darron Malakian😍 Scars on Broadway is also cooool. Everyone in system of a down is so talented and cool
bro you could not have forgotten "Forest" from Toxicity the little AGH he says in the verses in the second verse he hits like a really high screaming note when he says "FRIEEEEEEEEEND"
First of all, I just gotta point out that I have been a Serj fan long enough and passionately enough that I've been in a System of a Down tribute band AS Serj for almost 10 years now (Bullet Called Life, a tribute to System of a Down, if you're interested in checking out our Facebook page). And you are right, his techniques are insane and also very theatrical. After figuring most of them out over the years, I really feel like I can attack almost anything vocally. Now admittedly, I definitely have somewhat of a hard time with his higher register clean singing, lol. It's certainly easier to hit those notes when you throw a bunch of heat on it. Which leads me to the fact that (and I won't say for sure now because it's been so long) at one point I could land both screams in Streamline, down to the last second. I can also do those crazy screams in Suggestions. However, I more wanna talk about something interesting that I figured out after learning how to approach those screams. We all remember Mariah Carey, yes? Another amazingly talented singer whom, if you remember, could sing this slue of UNATTAINABLY high notes. These, in fact, were something called "whistle notes" or "whistle singing" being the technique, where you bottleneck the air enough with your throat, that it makes a sound akin to stretching the lip of a full balloon, as it slowly seeps air out, causing the rubber/latex/whatever to vibrate against itself. Obviously both obtaining and maintaining ANY level of control of this is next to impossible. BUT! My point that I was getting to is that the screams you pointed out at the end of each verse that are really high and crazy ("you gotta give a piece of your ass!"), are actually on that level. At least 2 out of 3 of them. The very last one that happens after the jam out and breakdown - right after the funny high part - where he says, "we need to evacuate the lightpost, it's all over...OOOVVEEERRRRR!" the word 'over' is 100% a full-on whistle scream. It was happy days for THIS guy the first time I discovered I can replicate this, let me tell ya, lmao. I have myself on video doing it live and also did a full band cover of it by myself in my studio (actually the drums were programmed, lol), so in case anyone was wondering, yes I actually have proof, haha. Anyway, thanks for the fellow shout outs to Serj's talent. Know that here...with this guy, you have someone in full agreeance with you for DAMN sure! Rock on, brutha.
I remember being a kid on limewire downloading songs basically at random; and i remember Dreaming being the first SOAD song i ever heard. I'd pay money to relive that moment.
I love system for their stop and play, its so good, and id expect nothing less from serj, hes an opera singer, a very impressive artist to say the least. System of a down is hands down my favorite band
Hi Marc, i have a suggestion for a next "Craziest vocal lines": Howlin' Pelle Almqvist the leader of The Hives. He's got some pretty crazy vocals in the early Hives songs
I think one important thing in his style of singing is acting to which bring more to his vocals like how rappers or another singing example Freddie Mercury do the gestures and the whole body movement
I think Serj Tankian's solo albums also has some gems like this, the one that comes to mind first is Honking Antelope, the vocals are so satisfying in that song just all around
I am a fan of the concept of this channel but I really dislike how you call things the "most impossible" and use similar phrases fraught with hyperbole. I would personally enjoy it much more if you just commented on how good of a singer they are rather than making every singer out like what they are doing is impossible rather than just good singing...some are clearly better than others but it seems like you're inflating EVERY singer and it makes your commentary lose value and makes the content seem like it isn't genuine. You don't have to use popular crimgey top 10 channel diction for the channel to grow.
