  • My New Donkeys are coming along after a few weeks. I'm working with them so the farrier can get their back feet trimmed. Once they are trimmed we will move on to more halter work, trailer loading and pack saddles.

These two donkeys finished out really well. They went to a family in Flagstaff, AZ. They turned out to be the sweetest little donkeys that love affection. If I stood near them without touching them they'd nudge me to get my attention. By the time they left in October I had grown very attached to them. But, they went to a good home and will have a great life. The folks who now own them renamed them Lewis and Clark. Perfect names!

I have a baby mini mule,,,, by surprise! She's just under a year old. I know zero about these little critters. Not much out there about training. She's a knucklehead. Are they all that way? She comes from a sound set. Mini mama sweet as they come and daddy's a mimi jack sound of mind says the owner I bought mama from. Sure wish there was more info out there. Your video popped up and helped me to pick up some tips. So thanks for sharing, im watching and learning.

Well geez...if only I had discovered this channel back when I rescued my two donkeys a few years ago!! They were very wild and terrified of people, sever PTSD in one of them. Took two years working with Ferrier coming several times a month to train to get their feet trimmed. Awaiting our pack saddle now to see if we can actually do some packing and riding which is what I originally intended when I got them. Glad to have your great resource now. Thanks for posting these and all you do!

You and your donkeys remind me of my new ones .Yours respond exactly like ours. In 2 weeks they have made progress like yours, with the same kindness.
Ours are really sweet . I started by singing to them. They couldn't believe their ears. When we have a new task to learn I play music and sing. Now, like you, I talk non stop to them and spend 15 minutes just with them. No problem taking them out for a walk. No problems with moving vehicles, bikes etc. We've come along way in 3 weeks.
Ours didn't know what treats were. We tried with barley, now they don't care. They think carrots are just ok..... to please us humans.

For a treat you sould try peppermints, I was given a 5 month old jack who had never been touched and by the second week I could do anything I wanted with him. I never had much experience with horses and had never seen a donkey in person b4 I had got my jack. I didn't find out his love for peppermint untill on day after church i still had a few in my pocket. After that I had to keep a few on hand and once in a while we would have one together. Jack Jack was just like a big old puppy dog, I even let him out of the pasture to roam freely in my yard. My mom would come over just to take him for walks down the road. I believe you when you say a donkey can make you look like the best trainer in the world because I had no prior experience and that donkey would do anything in the world for me. He would lay down just for belly rubs. We would lay out in the grass together for hours on end. I sure do miss him a whole lot and I don't believe I could ever find another like him.

You don’t know the donkey ear trick? You take the ear and bend downward, firmly , it doesn’t hurt them or the ear , it relax them , and they hold perfectly still, a lady that runs a donkey rescue showed us this , our donkeys were like yours , and they are now have perfect feed and are so lovingly bonded to us, unlike a horse , a donkey learns when a person does something to help them .

My dad, a WWII vet, bought two grey, unbroken donkeys, when I was 4 years old. They had never seen each other before. After 4 days, he had them hitched up to pull a buggy, with him and my mom, and my 1 year old baby sister on the seat, and me and my 5 year old sister standing on the board behind the seat. He drove us through Main Street of our little town in the Children’s day parade. Whenever we got to a manhole cover, they’d balk, he’d yell, hold on tight, zap them with a cattle prod, and the donkeys would jump up a couple feet, and move along. I guess he was old school.

Hi. I am new to Donkeys, I got two. They seem to be very wild, probably mistreated prior to my home. But the biggest problem is that they tried to kill my dog today or maybe at least injure her terribly. I was there to save her. They also tried to kill a goat, it was a male goat. I am not sure what to do, is there a way to train them? Or do I need them to go to a new home that doesn't have smaller animals. I'm sick to my stomach about what to do.

That was excellent. I have a mini-burro (aka donkey) named Taco that I purchased in April 2020. My Arabian mare passed away last December at the age of 35 so I needed a companion for my 25 yo Arab gelding who was very depressed and losing weight. After 3 days of introduction, they got along very well and the appetite picked up remarkably. Now I'm wondering how to feed him and the gelding without the burro getting more obese, He's picked up some weight since he's been here so now I put him in a side pen to eat Bermuda grass hay while the gelding eats his alfalfa then I let him out so they can both eat the remaining grass hay. Do you have any suggestions for me? Winter will be here soon and I don't want to separate Taco for too long since he only has shelter when in the pen with the gelding.
Thanks for the great video. My Taco was very timid when I first got him but still runs whenever he gets scared which I'm reading is not typical of a burro's intelligence; think first then run. I'm thinking he was abused somewhere along the line of previous ownership.

Janet O maybe a removable partition..(large piece plywood on a stand kinda thing) in the shelter, feed one one each side then remove later, or use an old gate to separate. It’s frustrating as I have the same problem, one barn, two equine, two diets haha..good luck.

@@MeadowDay thank you for your ideas. I have thought about that and I do have some extra corral panels though they are a different kind (I have a mishmash of panels). I should get one out and drag it around to see what I can do with them though none of the extras have a gate. What do you do to keep your equines separate? I also had a brilliant idea the other day. I had purchased a muzzle for the burro but then read it doesn’t really help unless you have grazing which I don’t. I had also considered hay pillows too but not sure that would work. Then I remembered I had once purchased the feeders in a barrel with a plastic insert with big holes in it to eat ( the name escapes me right now) but these barrels were early models and they’re deep and becomes quite hot in the summer in AZ but their new models are at the top of the barrel and high enough so the mini-burro cannot get into it plus it serves as a slow feeder. I will have to go out and look at the name. It’s quite expensive but probably worth it in vet bills for obese minis lol.

I don’t know anything about Donkeys but my horse enjoy some treats not others, maybe you’d have to find the kind of treats that your donkey likes. Personally there certain treats that I like and don’t like either

Aren't you suppose to stand close to the donkey where it can't kick out? We kinda slide down its side to take a leg.

Donkeys looove rubbing the inside of their ears. At least both of my donkeys do.
