- I celebrated the World Cup 2018 final and the arrival of the national team with Croatia fans in Zagreb. Many Croatia fans have come to Zagreb to celebrate from all around the world. I m from croatia and i can say that marko perkovic thompson is a legend and during the war he was in Croatia singing while those who now call him a traitor were fleeing out of croatia because they are cowards and they didnt suffer like rest of croatian people did and now they are politicians that lie in order to obtain power and money. Hello I'm from Croatia and I want to tell you how waterpolo caps became cool in our country. In 1990s we had war against Serbia and anyone who showed our national flag or squares would be punished or mostly killed,but when we established our own country everybody started wearing squares and so it goes even to this day.
No offence but this is poor explanation. Also one doesn't get mostly killed(or pregnant). They wear them because it's ridiculous to wear them, which makes it cool. :D

It was all god until the last part where you put us down so nicely as ultra nationalist. Well we are a nation who loves their country, culture and there own people. Now, if this is wrong than so be it. If you look at our team we had a truly croation team not like France who had Africans and strangers representing their nation. We represented ourselves and for this I am proud of .
They started wearing waterpolo caps as a sign of support for Croatian waterpolo team - which is for decades now one of the best in the world - top 3 for sure. Then at Euro 2016 Vedran Corluka (Croatia's defensive player) wore a waterpolo cap during a game after he got elbowed to the head. The blow made an open wound so he took a cap to stop it from bleeding all over his face. From then on, it just became a tradition.
The only reason why not to invite Thompson is because the media and news are telling everyone he's an extremist.
Otherwise there is nothing extreme or wrong with any of his songs, only Čavoglave is controversial because it's a war song.
M.P. Thompson is a good musician and composer of our best patriotic songs without which there is no celebration and especially a celebration of sports achievements. It is true that there are some stains from the beginning of his music career, but this is a history for every reasonable Croat. No matter what some foreign journalists have written about him, we respect him. Each state has something similar, but only small countries are always under a microscope, like us.

Hi, just here to add my two cents to the debate.At the beginning of this video your reporter mentions bad relations between Croatia and Serbia caused by "wars in the 90s" and then ends it with calling Thompson "ultranationalist" singer and wonders why did the football team not protest, clearly offending them by saying they were so much better on the pitch.
I think it's always better to check your facts before stating something that might indeed be incorrect and offensive to many people.
1. Relations between Croatia and Serbia are bad not because of some "wars during 90s". They are bad because in the 90s Serbia attacked Croatia using the Yugoslav army forces on the outside and Serb rebels on the inside, taking our territory step by step, village by village, burning, raping, killing - trying to create greater Serbia. Amongst aggressors was CURRENT Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic, and that is one of the main reasons the two countries still have bad relations. That is the fact you can easily check by searching for videos of speeches by Aleksandar Vucic given during 90s that clearly state his aspiration to create Greater Serbia on Croatian land.
2. Singer Marko Perkovic Thompson comes from one of the small Croatian villages that was under the attack, so during that time he wrote the song "Cavoglave" That song lifted the spirits of Croatian people and gave them courage to get out there and defend themselves despite being heavily outnumbered by enemy. His songs also lifted the spirits of people who have lost their loved ones and their homes, and those who spent years living abroad as refugees. Among those people were many of our football players. ( For example Luka Modric has watched his grandfather being killed, and spent years living as a refugee ). Thompson's songs are about love for his country and people - never hate towards others. It's easy to check that out just by google-translating the lyrics of his songs. But I guess it's easier to just call him ultranationalist because you've probably spent your time in Croatia with some people who told you so, being influenced by (or taking part in) propaganda that tries to draw attention from actual problems in Croatia (corruption, organized crime and so on...) by creating imaginary "ultranationalists" and "fascists".
3. The football team actually invited Thompson on their bus. They did that because the organisers of the welcome party refused their wish for Thompson to sing for them. Thompson's song called "Lijepa li si" has been the Croatian Footbal National Team's anthem for years.
4. What Croatia does not need if it wants to build on the positive energy are journalist's articles and videos like this, with false facts and statements by people who do not understand or purposely pretend that they don't understand the actual situation in Croatia.

Wasn't planning on writing anything on this but I feel I have to. I was there in Zagreb for the finals and the day after. I have to say the atmosfere was amazing. I felt like a kid on Christmas and I will never forget it for the rest of my life. As for the video, I liked everything except the end when he started to talk about Marko Perkovic "Thompson" and that he brings negativity to the country. I really don't understand people that feel that way towards him. The man is a patriot that fought in the war and he sings songs that some people can't handle. A true Croatian respects him and that's what the national team are, true Croatians.

Celebrations weren't "heavily divided". But some individuals who calls themselves organisators of event did everything to prevent Thompson from his performance. Like shutting down sound system. Besides, Thompson's presence was wish of players who won silver.

I was 23 when we came third in france. It was incredible. This time, i will only tell about final which we lost at about 7pm. I have never seen anything so crazy and i traveled the world. 5 am, 10 hours after we LOST the final, there were so many street parties and people singing as we had won. It was an energy that was unique and i am so blessed that i experienced this!!! I hope it will happen again ( fuck it, i KNOW it will), but i just wanna say, CROATIA BIG HEART;)

It is a sin to sing about love for your country and fellow countrymen? U pjesmi Lijepa li si koja govori o ljepoti Hrvatske i vjerujem da je najljepša navijačka pjesma nema ništa što navodi na mržnju, naprotiv, na ljubav prema Hrvatskoj.
