      As I said above, Seth, I think the Inspirational point here is while records and elite status are something special and a priveledge, something to work towards, most importantly, running is for the mind, soul, spirit, and our body and minds fitness. Not just records. It's the love of the sport, or anything we do, and its connection to our soul and spirit, as seen here with you in how well you shine, thats we always have to remember. 👍🙏

      Agreed! I liked he was giving shout outs along the way. I mean, once the wheels come off, the goal is off the table, so why not just change it for the better and enjoy the run; make the best of it! One just has to realize that some days are unexpected lessons and that better days will come.

    Last month I ran my first major marathon in Chicago. Shooting for a 3:05, I had a disappointing 3:48. I appreciate you holding your head high because it was hard for me to. You keep me motivated, so thank you and much love

      I was shooting for sub 4 in Chicago and had a stomach issue just like Seth's and finished at a 4:38. I knew I still had sub for in me and signed up for Indianapolis and got a 15 min PR at 3:58:41. I definitely wasn't as positive as Seth was initially but got there about a day or two later. Love seeing how positive he stayed, he is an inspiration for sure

    As an auto racing friend of mine once said, "If you don't crash every once in a while you ain't racing." Sometimes things go south it's all about what you do at those times that matter. Seth finished and showed a great attitude. I am sure there are private feelings he has about this and he will work through them but he showed some leadership with how he handled it for us and he did the work.
    Fantastic work and I love being on this journey.

    It's interesting how things change over the years. No one could fail to be impressed with Seth's relentless positivity after his bad day. But when I first started running in the 70's, an experienced marathon and ultra runner told me not to be too bothered about dropping out if you started to suffer. That way you could try again the next week or next month without affecting your health negatively. No medals for marathon finishing in those days 😃 Maybe a certificate if you got under the Road Runners Club standard time !

    Seth, last month I ran my first half marathon race. I had calf issues and finished in 2:08. My PB prior in training was 1:46:56 so I was so disappointed but I finished. Nov 7th I ran my second race. Finished 1:41:46 a PB by 5 min. Keep turning that door knob brother.

    So happy for you! You kept going and thats fantastic 👏 I LOVED running, I have 3 spinal diseases that unfortunately are degenerative and my Dr has convinced me of the damage each landing stride is doing to my discs and facets. I went through the same thing you did during the race...silly stomach issues kept me from getting any nutrition to my body as it said, “nothing shall pass.” Run/Walking wasn’t working to settle my stomach either…I eventually had walk an entire mile before starting the run walk again. Once I overcame this issue, I was able to finish the race with the same targeted pace that I wanted to run throughout. I’m going to have to play with the nutrition again. (Sorry I didn't make the group run.)

    You're amazing, Seth. I don't know how much of your positive, outgoing, energetic personality on camera during and after a failed performance like that might have been putting on a happy face for the benefit of the "DGR family" and your TH-cam channel, but it seems genuine. I, on the other hand, have never failed miserably in a race where I expected to do great things and then been able to be positive about it. My first reaction has always been, dammit, body, why did you fail me after all that hard work? Then I've been down in the dumps for at least a couple of days. I'm the same way about injuries and poor training performances, too. Now, seeing you fail badly and apparently just brush it off with a smile and an "I'll be back," I realize that even at 60 years of age I have a lot to learn from you, young man. Thanks for the lesson.

    I can feel you Seth… Although I’ve run hundreds of Half Marathons I have never ran a Full Marathon because of stomach issues when fueling. I discovered that I was Gluten intolerant and too much gluten before a race was upsetting my GI and then when I was fueling in race always hell broke (if you are gluten intolerant the walls in your GI track thinner and become irritable). Now I’ve cut gluten completely and I will be running my first one next month! Hopefully I will manage to finish one! You are our daily inspiration! Keep on buttering that (gluten free) bread 😂

    I've followed you for the last 3 years and loved watching you win the last 2 Pikes Peak marathons but your effort for the NYC marathon was inspirational. I'm 70 and ran my first marathon for nearly 30 yrs 3 weeks ago - the Yorkshire Marathon in Great Britain - my aim was to get a qualifying time for the London marathon. With 25 miles gone I was over 2.5 mins in hand with a long drag up an incline (hill), put my head down and dug in to top of incline (hill) at 25.7 with a turn to the finish. I'd upped the pace turned the corner and bang it hit me, it was as if a switch had been turned on in my head, that last half mile cost me 4mins. I was falling into the barriers, staggering across the road, nothing I could do. So grateful for the help from the two pacemakers who I'd run with from the start and who came back to help. I missed the time by 1 min but I'm out there training for the next one, that is if the wife will let me as I am currently banned from marathons, well at least for this year. As you say quitting is not an option. "PAIN IS TEMPORARY BUT VICTORY IS FOREVER"

    Racing is always a humbling experience but also a learning experience. You will only come back stronger from this!!! I don't equate to the level of runner as you but you mentioned stomach. Personally I found that just eating the exact same foods have helped me race so much stronger. Seth, in 2015 I ran the Monumental Marathon in Indianapolis. I hoped to run a time in the low 3 hours, but the wheels fully came off at mile 18 and ended up going much slower, 3:45.
    After this, I struggled to maintain consistent training for many years. I always wanted to train more, but kept falling off for extended periods. The worst phase of this came during peak quarantine in 2020.
    But in 2021, using much of your advice and training philosophy, I began my redemption arc for the Monumental Marathon.
    For the last 6 months, I consistently trained and reclaimed my love for distance running. This Saturday, the training culminated as I raced through the streets of Indy again. I ran even splits the whole race, and crossed the line in 3:05:11, a personal best! It was such a powerful feeling of validation and achievement.
    I know you have nothing to prove, but man, I really hope 2022 is the year of the Demoor NYC Marathon Redemption Arc.
    I’m picturing you crossing the line in Central Park under 2:20:00, and I feel that same sense of validation!
    I cant wait to see what’s next for you! There’s only one way to go from here, onward and upward!

      This was such a great story: thank you for taking the time to share it! Loved the redemptive arc bit!
      I especially appreciated it because I have run only one marathon, in 2018, and had such a disappointment that it really derailed my running for about a year. Thanks for sharing your similar experience. I love that eventually you came back and were triumphant! Great job, and thanks for the encouragement. It's good to have hope.

    Bro mad respect for putting up this video. You have had such a remarkable running career and work extremely hard. We all have races less than expected and for someone of your caliber/skill set to show this shows tons of class. A lot of pros would just go on to forget this and only show their “best races”. When I ran Boston i saw pros in the drop out tent and they lost my respect. You Sir toughed it out to the end, you Sir are truly a class act and that medal is well deserved. God bless you and in reality the things people cherish most are the things they suffer through the most. This also shows that no matter how tough things get, whether in life or in running, just keep going and grind it out. Plus your attitude is fantastic. Once again mad respect bro.

    • @Kelly_Ben
      @Kelly_Ben 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd recently heard that many pros, if not meeting their goals, drop. I found that so disappointing... I understand dialing it back and treating it like a training run, or dropping for injuries/GI issues, or because they've decided to give it a go at another race in a week, but quitting because they're having a "bad day" seems like such a primadonna thing to do.

    • @seanmcelroy9774
      @seanmcelroy9774 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kelly_Ben yea because at first I had heard some might have dropped due to injury, but then I had learned not all are like that, they drop because of having a bad day. And especially if you’re a pro, what kind of message does that send. It sends that if things get tough, give up. That’s why I have so much respect for Seth for toughing it out and even putting the video up. It takes guts and humility to do that. So that why he has my utmost respect in the running community. Plus his attitude is phenomenal after his race. Normally I am Mr Poopy Pants after a less than optimal race so I have taken that to heart to have an awesome attitude not matter what the outcome. See this is awesome and God is awesome because even from this not great race it has turned into something great that will help prevent me from sinning (vice of anger), so once again many thanks to Seth for this.

    Hey Seth! We both had a tough race weekend! I DNF'd a local 55-miler. IT band issues I've previously had caused my knee to lock up and couldn't bend it. I ran the first 11 miles and walked the next 24 miles until I missed an aid station cut off time. DGR - We don't quit!!!!

    Hey Seth, G'day from Down Under 🇦🇺🪃 Wondering if you felt like the caffeinated gels contributed to your stomach woes? In the future would you start with non caf and then bring those in later in the race for an added boost, especially if you've had your morning cup with your Bobo's as well. Do you track your daily caffeine content? Personally I aim for 300-400mg max per day, counting my coffee too and in longer ultras I'll try and use the CAF100 for a big boost over major climbs or near the tough spots of a course, different from a fast road marathon I know. Keep up the great content, love the channel! DGR💪

    Your ability to inspire so many people, even when you were facing unexpected obstacles, is amazing. You could have called it a day and no one would have thought any less of you; however, you had the attitude and fortitude to seek beauty, enjoy the day, relish the crowd and finish the race. While the race may not have gone as planned, we (the viewers) probably gained more from this life lesson than if you had met your goals. Thank you.
