    I'm installing one for my neighbor and just wanted to see it done first to avoid any surprises. So much new technology. That's why these TH-cam videos are all so helpful. This one was clear and professional. New caps and check for frayed wires. Thanks for posting.

      @@FrederickDunn Where is the stuff between 3:52 and 3.59? Magic!! To be precise, you are probably focusing more on the electrical part, which is kind of obvious for some people (like me and Christopher). I wanted the actual "installation" part, i.e. screwing/nut-bolting/nudging/pushing/pulling. Please be sure to include both types of works (electrical and manual) in your future videos as there are two types of viewers, (1) has the manual installation part figured out and needs electrical connection information, (2) has electrical connection part figured out and needs manual installation part.

    I'm in a rental apartment, and just installed a similar LED to replace an ugly hanging light. i bought a Hampton Bay dimmable LED, and my room switch is already a dimmer. When I installed it and put the breaker back on , the LED turned on to full brightness and would not turn off, and would not dim down. I then realized I had forgotten to connect the ground. When i did that and restored power at the breaker, the light switch started crackling so I turned off the power immediately. Is this a sign the switch is faulty? Is the switch wired backward? This breaker provides power to two other bedrooms, so i had three black wires (well two black and one white) and two white wires coming from the light box. is this enough information to guess at a possible cause? If i didn't have all the hot wires tightly wound in the cap, could that cause the LED to not turn off at the switch? Thanks for any insight.

    Why would u need any special license to instal light fixtures in ur own home? That’s just crazy

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you own the home, you can do electrical work, if permits are required, you can also do a home owner repair that just gets inspected by your local NEC enforcement entity. Most homeowners aren't going to pull a permit or get a licensed electrician to swap a ceiling light, but some folks have no idea what the safety issues are. I've inspected homes before where ceiling lights were put in without a junction box at all. I'm putting out information designed to keep people safe. I'm also aware of the realities.

    Nice video and thanks for the effort. I do need to offer a technical correction in the science terminology used. Though it is used to measure the light bulb's "temperature", Kelvin is not measured in degrees. It's just in Kelvin. So you would say that the light was 3000 Kelvin and not 3000 DEGREES Kelvin. It's irrelevant to the purposes of your video but was something I still thought needed clarification. Thanks for your video

    Most important: thank you for the effort to show how to do this right. Great note on inspecting all the LEDs. Insteon and ZWave dimmers are a great update when you're replacing switches, but you'll often want a neutral in the wall box. They make ZWave fan speed controllers too.
    I get the caution because, well, idiots do dumb things w/o understanding them. Still, who needs to "authorize me"? I'm not an LME, but a degreed EE w/decades of experience, a healthy fear and understanding of electricity, and the right tools. How about just "don't blame me if this goes wrong for you"? Of course, it's your channel and you have to mitigate your risk.
    Oh, and when I tripled the electric capacity of our last house for a datacenter, I had an LME certify everything for the permit. Reading the NEC and UEC (Uniform Electric Code) was like reading an obituary. There are a lot of ways to die, cause a fire, or injure folks. Know the code, indeed!

    I think, it's a lot to do with insurance, if unlicensed person installing electrical appliances.
    If the insurance co. finds out the fire in the house caused by bad electrical installation from unlicensed installer, the may not pay.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the installation practices meet the NEC requirements, the homeowner is fine doing the work himself or herself. My home is completely insured and I built it myself and wired and plumbed it and passed all inspections. If it's done correctly, that's what counts.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@szaki The National Electric Code stands across all States as the minimum standard and you're right, localities can tighten those up more, they just can't relax the standards. Insurance Companies have no idea who did the work unless a permit was granted. I'm not advocating for homeowners who don't know what they are doing.

    In Australia u have to be a licensed electrician to replace light fittings and do electrical work although it doesnt stop ppl electrocuting themselves or setting fire to their houses - At least u know what ur doing

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Australia has lots of restrictions I've noticed. Here where I live, I was even allowed to do ALL of the electrical work on my own home when I was building it, including the service panels. I had to hire an electrician to do the actual connection/service drop to the panels. When the electric utility inspector did the walk through and inspected everything before getting power turned on, he was VERY impressed and I had zero hits. I asked him how I compare with job sites with electricians and journeymen doing the work? He said "do you really want to know?" and then he held up the hit list... I was amazed. "Some" contractors cut corners and try to get away with some sub-par work and often used unlicensed workers to actually do the work, by doing it all myself, I knew I didn't cut any corners and used only the best materials I could buy. This is my retirement home, so I wanted to do everything myself. In the past, I was a licensed inspector and have seen it all. I became an inspector so I would see all of the failures long before I began construction on my own home. :) Parts of Australia won't even allow you to open feed your honey bees... soooo.... not a place I'd like to live :)
