Ubehebe craters is such a fascinating volcanic feature, and out of all places it's in Death Valley. Been to Ubehebe Craters once, and it was beautiful, but I never knew those lava flows existed or were related to the craters. Keep up the great work GH
I love Death Valley. I've been to Ubehebe a few times. Now that I know more about the geology, I want to go back! Last time I visited, it was so windy that I couldn't stand up straight and I was getting pulverized by grains of sand. I saw another tourist lean over the edge of the crater and let the wind hold them up. Very glad it didn't stop suddenly, because that would not have been a fun way to get to the bottom.
I hiked down into the crater when I last visited. The trip down was easy but the climb out was very strengnous. The reverse slope of the crater was very steep and it was filled with loose sediment and it was difficult to get a foot hold into the soil. At every step, you kept on sliding backward
When I was a teenager and realized road cuts could tell a story, I was hooked. The Earth has a story to tell if we can read it and read it correctly. I was absorbed into the planet and years later they told me I was now a "geophysicist" with papers on the wall. It was someone like you who got me started. I bet you anything you are getting a few people started, Thank you for that. It is a lot of work, I know.
The Walker Lane IS a Basin and Range feature. So is Death Valley and the other deep valleys west to Owens Valley. Ubehebe is a minor event, and the entire area within 100 miles has numerous "little" volcanic features. It is an aspect of the weakened crust associated with crustal extension that created the Basin and Range. Magma has been able to penetrate to the surface all over. If you drive along 395, you see several of these features, and there is volcanism south of I-40 to the east of 395.
I visited this crater a couple years ago and watered the landscape a bit 😁. It was near dusk so unfortunately I didn't have time to hike around. On the way out of Death Valley I drove through clouds of insects that nearly clogged my radiator.
Omg... that is SO f'ing cool, thank you! I live at the base of Olancha Peak in Olancha and the views towards the east are pretty spectacular with all the different colors along the Coso range. The geology surrounding us is amazing! You are awesome! Keep doing what you're doing! All of your info really helps and puts our minds at ease! Viewing all of this from your perspective makes it seem less scary. 🙏💖😀👍
I'm happy they have a parking lot at the top of the crater with a nice path going right down to the bottom. Too bad you have to drive out to the middle of one of the hottest deserts on the planet.
Why is it that on your channel it is not yet possible to hear the vocal translation in other languages (so not the uncomfortable subtitles that have been there for years) of what you say? 😐
@@GSMSfromFV I was thinking about that! If the giant ant lion had only been created a decade prior, then maybe the giant ants wouldn't have invaded Los Angeles!
It's just his natural voice. Not everybody speaks identically, especially when they're recording their speech. There's a lot of individual variation in people who aren't trained performers. He's a trained and very knowledgable geologist instead.

Little Hebe Tuff Cone is the most adorable name for a geologic feature I’ve ever heard.
Thanks for all the hard work on these videos!
Thanks as always, Geology Hub!

Death Valley just got deadlier
I'm glad you still say pyroclastic flow instead of current, i know it's the up to date jargon but I don't like it
Wow! That's cool! I've never heard of this volcano! Ya learn somethin new every day haha.
When I was 14 years old I went down to the bottom of the crater and then climbed back out. Difficult but a lot of fun.

Beautiful place to live! Lucky bastard lol
@aperson1
It's a challenge but well worth it!
I’ve hiked around it. It has an unusual smell.
That might’ve been bruce from the comments lol
@ I can’t remember why and it’s been decades. Maybe it’s time to go this spring.
Why are the volcanoes on the West Coast so uneventful/quiet? Volcanoes everywhere else seen to always be erupting but here it seems very rare
Thanks!
Thanks for the video
I'm not surprised

Very cool! Is there enough ground water to 'fuel' a similar eruption at this time?
I visited years ago
Some contend that the Hot Spot that gave rise to Ubehebe has moved Eastward (relative) and was "subducted" beneath the Mid-continental Plate...
🤔
"the Hot Spot that gave rise to Ubehebe"
Thank you as usual for your interesting videos and my comment for the algorithm 😊👍🌋
I've hiked down. Family kid didn't want to climb out, almost left kid in volcano 😂
Ah good ole Death ☠️ Valley! Loved going for a little Road Trip to the Dessert in winter 🥶❄️
✌️🌞♥️🌼💜

Should we consider it "extinct"?
No. Each single cone/crater may be a singular event, but the over-all field is still capable of similar events.
Sedan Crater was formed by a gigantic mutated ant lion larva in 1962.
"They" don't want us to know the truth! 😅
And the 1954 movie "Them" was very prophetic. How did they know?!! ;o))

BCE …. What could it possibly be referring to…
Informative my Dork-master
I kept thinking of the Doritos, Puppy-Monkey-Baby every time you said the name😊
Anyone know what is this guys accent?
Pretty sure it’s not a bot.

Volcano can happen anytime even in your house a volcano can spawn under your house and you will never know😢
no, that isn’t possible.

@israelSamuel-ur4vq Stay afraid stay very afraid. Or go for a walk
no, it’s not lol

You have got to be kidding me.
Did the algorithm tell you to do a video about Death Valley?
Monogenetic slop.

this is not a bot dummy

I’m saying bots that I fund in the comment section, don’t be rude, or mean when you don’t know what I mean😊
@israelSamuel-ur4vq seeing other comments it seems to fit. And TH-cam will never get rid of the bot problem
