A lot of dog owners are told by trainers or other people that they must use a crate in order to train their dog and that having a dog crate is something that is required.
There are a lot of myths about dog crates and in this video I want to go over some of them.
Dog crates can be a useful tool at certain times, but they also can be abused very easily which tends to happen more often than you may think.
In this video I will go over the following things:
    Do dogs like their crates?
How do you crate train a dog?
Why is it good to crate train a dog?
How long can you leave a dog in a cage?
How long can a dog be left in a crate during the day?
How long can you leave an 8 week old puppy in a crate?

I'm a dog sitter, and I don't like if a client routinely leaves the dog in a crate all day while they're at work. I find how common it is as a practice kind of shocking actually. Rarely do dogs need that, the vast majority of dogs can roam the house freely, and if there are chewing furniture issues, you can deal with that with an X-Pen or baby gates (there are also sprays you can buy to discourage chewing, and provide them with chew-toys and rawhides as an alternative) and that's much better imo than confining a dog to such a small space. A dog is a roaming animal, they're built to run a lot, they need room to walk around.

That really depnds on how long the dogs really in the crate for, if your only putting the dog in there for a few hours such as 1- 6 hours, if crating your dog well your away mean the dog is safer then there's nothing wrong with that and crates actully can help a. My dog has a crate in our laundry room and goes in there when he wants/ when he wants time away from my 7 year old. When he is in there he is not allowed to be bothered by anyone as our house rule and he enjoys the break. He sleeps there too most of the time overnight. When I must leave, the laundry room is his area, we simply put up a gate at the door but he's never left alone too long as I work from home. When I come back I find him in his crate happily snoozing away. I found that as far as house breaking goes, I didn't really need it. I just kept him on a regular schedule.

I only agree with crate training for medical and training purposes. I wouldn't have a dog if I couldn't leave them alone. I'd get a massive enclosure for unsupervised hours. I think crates are animal prisons except when absolutely necessary for it's physical life safety. Dogs aren't denning animals. They use dens to protect vulnerable puppies and birthing mother dogs, and sleeping. They do not stay in a den whilst awake except when protecting themselves.

Had dogs most of my life and they were all kept in a crate the first several months when I went to work or left the house. There is nothing wrong with crating a dog if you properly excised them and gave them attention before you crate them. I find it weird how some people are completely against crating. So you rather your newly not yet house broken dog/puppy free roam the house when you're gone to tear up the house and possibly eat or just something that may kill him? Sounds like these are the people who shouldn't have dogs.

I bought a huge crate for vacation, but for safty. I have a dane/boxer mix, so yes, huge crate! But I didn't use it for traveling, or in the hotel, just at my aunt's house. Outside, cool, plenty of breeze. It was both to keep him away from the other animals, and from running off out in the country, and out of state. It worked, but you can't leave them in it for hours at a time. He has aggression issues, we've worked through most of them, takes time and patience, but I still have to take precautions. The reason I have him is all the marks on his cage at the shelter... no kids, no pets, aggresive.. he was brought back to the shelter by several other people. I'm used to mastiffs. Turns out he's fine with my cats, but not strays, fine with kids, but I don't let them pull on him, or ride him.... but he hates dogs. Maybe 5 months in and out of a shelter will do that? So when I went somewhere he couldn't go, he was briefly in the cage, and the rest of the time he was right by my feet, or streaching out on the bed at the hotel. The safty issue was to keep him out of fights(he will fight other dogs), and from being lost in a strange place when I wasn't there. It worked, but it was hard to leave him in a cage, even briefly, and I think that maybe it should be.

l HATE crates! My dog hates crates. My dog's breeder kept her in a crate and because of it she's not been socialized. Even my groomer doesn't like using them. I like your idea of the pen. After all we don't put our children in a crate, we put them in a pen. As it should be with our furbabies.

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Many puppies climb out of pens. The crate just adds a roof to prevent that. As he said in the beginning of the video, dog crates get abused very easily. That seems to be what your "breeder" (sounds more like puppy mill, or at least byb to me) was doing. A collar can also be abused very easily. Lots of people strangle their dogs into "submission" (and no, you don't need a special choke collar for that). That doesn't mean no one should use a collar to attach a tag to. Some people use food to fatten their dog up until it can barely walk. Does that mean no one should feed their dog? Just because something can be used to cause harm, doesn't mean its mere existence causes harm.
The same applies to a crate. It's good to build positive associations with anything a dog might encounter in the future, and that includes crates. If your dog ever needs to have an overnight stay at the vet, it will probably be locked in a crate. If you ever need to travel with the dog (and can't use your own car), it will probably need to be in a crate.

Thank you for saying this. I can't stand it when people crate dogs at all. I just rescued a sweet little Chug 2 weeks ago from a poop, pee infested tiny kennel. After getting her home I realized that the 7/ 8 year old dog isn't house trained. I refuse to crate her when She's inside and I can't watch her. I don't know if this is right but I bought reusable doggy diapers. After getting the diapers I realized she's in heat. Poor little baby. Anyway instead of cratting her while inside she wears a diaper. If I see her hike her leg I do a correction. When I don't see her hike her leg the wee doesn't go all over my house. I'm having an extremely hard time potty training. I'm hoping it gets easier after she's spayed in a couple of weeks. With all the trauma she's been through I made her a promise. This is her forever home. I will never force her into a cage. If she never catches onto potty training she'll just have to wear a diaper indoors. I really hope it doesn't come to that. I'm extremely opposed to cratting any dog. My daughter crates her dogs. When Grandma is babysitting nobody goes inside the crate until bedtime.

I see crates as a sort of laziness in educating a dog to behave. We have never had any of our dogs in crates, and they never peed, pooped, destroyed things etc. when they were alone. So because you don't have time and energy to train your dog to behave, and simply postspone the "problem" into a crate, then you should not have a dog.

Had dogs most of my life and they were all kept in a crate the first several months when I went to work or left the house. There is nothing wrong with crating a dog if you properly excised them and gave them attention before you crate them. I find it weird how some people are completely against crating. So you rather your newly not yet house broken dog/puppy free roam the house when you're gone to tear up the house and possibly eat or ingest something that may kill him? Sounds like these are the people who shouldn't have dogs.

I absolutely hated crates before! I did not want to use one, but when my rescued older dog started tearing up the house and began eating garbage and getting on the counter and getting into everything I tried a doggy gate to keep her on the tiled floor away from all the dangerous things but then she began tipping over her food and water and tearing down the gate so I had no choice but to get a crate. I did everything I could to make it comfortable, nice bed and blankets, toys, stuffed animals, it's pretty big and I got these cool bowls that attach to the wall of the kennel so she can't tip them over. My dog isn't a toy dog...She won't play with toys or chew on toys, just bones. Since she's getting old and her teeth are chipping she can no longer have bones. I've tried lick Matt's but they only last a few minutes. She won't do kongs and I don't know what else to use so she isn't bored. She uses it even when we are home and the door is open, she just goes in there and sleeps or cleans herself. I feel bad when we are gone 6 hours a day so any suggestions on what I can out in there?

Payton Lescalleet don't feel bad putting her in a crate its literally for her own safety she could eat something that would cause a blockage in her intestines or cause bloat and both are very deadly since she's a dane bloat is a very real possibility. You could get a proper tether and dog house outside for when you are gone if you think that the crate is inhumane since tethering gives the dog a far larger space to roam and is more entertaining since there are actually things going on outside.

I wouldn't say that dog crates are necessarily cruel, but then like every single human being a dog is also very much an individual and so some dogs are never really going to accept a crate.
But personally I think that the dog, should have a bed of it's own and preferably a room to itself at night.
I also think that as long as they get a bowl of fresh water in the morning with their dinner, and in general have access to their water bowl during the daytime then they shouldn't really need access to it at night.
It's important that the dog has a set and clear routine.

Even stay at home moms sometimes have to leave the house when they want to take their kids somewhere. The only people I know who really never leave their house, are those suffering from mental disorders like depression and/or anxiety.
We have a crate for our dog even though she's almost never home alone (because my depressed grandmother lives with us and never leaves the house, except when she goes to the doctor, in which case one of us will stay home). The dog chooses to sleep in there every day. In fact, when I was dogsitting for a friend with a smaller dog, my dog kept trying to squish herself into the smaller dog's crate because she loves small spaces. She didn't even fit in there completely; there was always some part of her that was sticking out.
There are only 2 situations where the crate door was closed for more than 20 minutes, one of which was was when I was washing the bedding and didn't want her to GET INTO THE CRATE. The other situation was when I first got my cat. In my experience, the fastest way to get animals accustomed to each other, is by having them sleep in the same room. So because she sleeps in her crate anyways, I closed the door and allowed the cat to sleep where she could see it and get used to it. This prevented a situation where the dog learns to be nice to the cat while on leash, but then tries to go after it once she is off leash. Dogs are not very good at generalizing, so if a behavior is only practiced in one setting, the dog is likely to only do the practiced behavior in that one setting. The crate gave me a fifth setting in which I could practice interactions (the other four being through a glass door, on a leash, with a muzzle, or with the cat in a cage).

Like one client had a German Shepard puppy in one, all day. I also don't like it if they have no access to food or water. Imagine putting a human child through something like that, it would be abuse. But in a pen where there's space to move around, going into the crate or not is voluntary, and they have food and water and toys, I think that's good.

Crate training can absolutely be cruel when done wrong. But if done correctly, a dog can truly love their crate! I use a crate with my puppy for bedtime. I’ve positively reinforced the heck out of it, giving him treats, pets, and lots of love while he’s in there. Inside, he has a big soft blanket folded over a few times so the bottom is extra padded, and his favourite toys. He only stays in his crate with the door closed during the night while he sleeps. During the day, the door stays wide open so he can go in and out as he pleases (I work from home so I’m able to supervise him as he wanders the house, and let him outside to go potty every 2-4 hours). The reason I use a crate instead of a pen is because, while dogs aren’t denning animals, no dog wants to sleep in the same spot that they use the bathroom, and since he loves his crate and goes in voluntarily to take naps and have some time to himself, the crate is a good way to encourage him to hold it in through the night until I let him out in the morning. I set an alarm at the same time every morning and the first thing I do when I wake up is let him outside to go potty. I know that if I left the crate door open, he would go potty all over the floor (even if he were in a pen), so this helps him to steer away from that. When he was very young I woke up twice during the night to take him to go potty. I did this for a while, slowly reducing potty breaks from 2, to 1, to none. Now that he’s a bit older, he sleeps all the way through the night. He is happy to be in his cozy crate for bedtime, because we stick to a tight schedule and he knows what to expect. There’s never any crying, whining, or other signs of distress from him. His crate is a safe, happy place. Once he’s older and fully housetrained, the door will stay open unless absolutely necessary. But for now, it’s an excellent way to keep him from getting into any trouble while I’m asleep. Crates should NEVER be a punishment! Dogs need enough room to comfortably stand up, lay down and turn around in their crates! Please be responsible everyone :)

Crates should be used as a safe space for dogs, where they sleep or in general just go. Personally my dog sees her crate as her own little bed, we do not shut the door on her, she goes in there when she wants and as she pleases, which is most of the time. People who often cage their dog may try to argue, “But my dog loves his crate!”-but that’s a bunch of hooey. There’s no dog on Earth who “loves” to be locked inside a cage. However, dogs do love humans and will tolerate almost anything that their guardians force them to endure, including being locked up. According to experts quoted in the book, dogs who appear to enjoy being in their crates because they keep running back to them, even when given their freedom, are often really exhibiting an unnatural lack of self-confidence or fearfulness toward the outside world brought on by extreme confinement and long-term isolation.
At best, crating is a purely human convenience that merely postpones the day when real training will have to take place, because dogs simply can’t learn to interact successfully with the world while in isolation. At worst, it makes behavior training-including house training-more difficult and has lasting detrimental effects. And we’re not even talking about the dogs who have burned to death when they were unable to escape house fires and other disasters.

They like relaxing on the pillows they like to sleep next to each other
And when they are locked up they have no problem telling me that they want to get out trust me LOL..... They will let u know if they want out ..
It's not as bad as you making it seem

They're liked by people who have control issues, always. I don't mean thatt as in they can't control a dog, I mean it as in people that need to control everything and everyone around them.

I built these massive 3.5ft long x 3.5ft wide x 4 ft high wooden crates for our dogs and they are taking to them just fine. Made it for them to stay in during the day bc one of them is a shithead and likes to throw temper tantrums and destroy the house and poop and pee all over when we leave even for 5 minutes. It’s not a prison for them it’s their space it’s plenty big for them and they use it as their den when we are home them come and go as they please but know they have to go in their when we leave.

Crates are cruel. Owners abuse crates by leaving dogs in there for way too long. They should be illegal in USA too

My mom keeps the puppy in there all day every day since he's be here we got him somewhere in December he was born. On the 4th she moved him in this one room were he now cant really be free in because she got mad at him for scratching at the walls and taring it up so now he's just in the cage all day every day she only feeds him twice she claims and he has a blanket over his cage with buckets of paint to hold it down i wish to send pictures i keep telling her shes doing it all wrong she says she knows what shes doing she continue to to yell shut up or smack the crate when he crying and i told her thats not going to hel his situation she says he's crying for attention and i tell her he's not getting it and we constantly get in to arguments when i ask yo play with him she says no leve him in there i wish we never got him because he's noy in an any better place then the shelter he's a small dog i told her he's not going to cooperate he doesn't feel safe he has anxiety and shes just making it worse she doesn't listen 5 months in the cage
