As a recovering heroin addict I have to say that this is my favorite rendition of this song. It perfectly captures the loneliness and self-loathing and isolation I felt as my life spiraled out of control. I had tons of money and was good looking and in as good of shape as most professional athletes, but I was always battling opioid dependency after a car accident and after the doctors cut me off I turned to heroin. It ruined my life. I went from having everything to nearly living on the streets. Instead of the streets I chose rehab, and now I'm 11 months sober and trying to rebuild some sort of life. This song makes me really think about my life and how crazy and dark it got and how much I ruined or lost... Sorry for the rant, but this song is incredibly personal to me. I was skeptical that someone else could do it justice after Cash and Reznor, but your version does a way better job of capturing how I always felt while struggling with my addiction. Great job.
Wow John that's incredible! I'm glad you felt I did the song justice. Well done on getting clean, that's a phenomenal effort, I hope your life continues on the up and up!
this version of the song sounds like its bleeding through from the afterlife with heavy regret and sadness. sorta like an attempt to contact a close friend or family member with zero chance of success. incredibly done!
Hey Jennifer. That's such an amazing comment to get! I was actually kind of worried about doing Hurt justice. People like Trent Reznor and Johnny Cash can sing this with such sincerity, because they've both been there. So as someone who has been there yourself, it means a lot to hear that it resonated with you :)
Thanks dude! The first reaction I had to this was my housemate walking in and saying "I like the Johnny Cash version of this song, but I don't like this. Who's this?" ...so I'm glad somebody dug it haha!
I like this version just as much, even though its arguably much simpler with the instrumental, that combined with the slower pace makes it feels more defeated. Like you're really at rock bottom.
Yep that's me. You might also be into my electronic side project Steampunk Megaphone where I sing and produce. This one's a reworking of Digital Bath by Deftones /watch?v=-8Taq836D-E
Thanks for the feedback man. It is a bit heavy on the reverb, I'd probably agree with you there. You know, I'm always tempted to take things down because I feel I could do a better job vocally, or because I would mix it differently today...but then I think this represented a point in time for me, and it's authentic for that reason. If I remixed it now I think I'd probably lose some of that authenticity. Sometimes you've just gotta take your past and own it, warts and all!

So keen for that movie! Thanks for the comment :)
Cole259 i agree. The remix by cash was ass. This particular version would destroy that trailer for the better.

and this comment is mine :)
I feel like the reverb is way too strong in this version, otherwise it would've been perfect.

Hmmm. That didn't work out so good. Is that slower? Not a good idea.
