This still slaps in 2022 , I can't imagine what it sounded like to people in 1945 . I can hear why so many players were never the same after hearing the early Parker/Gillespie records .

Sadly, Bebop was the only movement in Jazz that never really took off with in the public eye. Really sucks, because this tune slaps

Shure spoke to me in 1990. Been listening once in a while every since.

One of the reasons why I think this Bird solo is significant is because it has most of his Birdisms in one solo, all wrapped together into one cohesive package. One who has spent enough time transcribing all the rest of Bird’s solos will probably be 60% done transcribing this one before even listening to it the first time. This song is almost Parker 101

And then Dizzy takes it to another level.

Al Haig was Bud Powell's favorite piano player.

I love Al Haig. He used to have a solo gig in New York on 8th in what is now Otto's, this would be 1978-79. Right around the corner from the Cookery and down the street from Bradley's. His back was to a window at street level, and you could stand on the street and watch Al Haig play standards and bebop. Once in a while he'd look back at you and wink. Guy was brilliant, an unheralded hero of bebop and jazz.

Al Haig was a gracious gentleman who offered me the opportunity to sit in with him regularly at his steady, 4-night-a-week gig at Gregory's on the Upper East Side, back in 1977. He even called me for a few paying gigs. I was 16 years old at the time. Needless to say, I learned a lot. Tunes, language, accompaniment, etc. It wasn't lost on me that I was being allowed to experience music in the midst of jazz history. Funny too, that when he would call a sub for whatever reason, he'd call Walter Bishop, Jr, another Charlie Parker pianist. Those were some days... What a dream!

Was heralded at the time but drifted in obscurity over the years. By all accounts a great player but had some personality issues you could say! Not particularly nice to the women in his life. You have to separate the person in real life from the greatness of the music sometimes!
