Ride on the rear of 17017 on 77 from Whippany to NYC: • Community Coach HD 60f...
Welcome aboard Community Coach route 77X. Our bus today is brand new 2016 MCI D4500CT 17006, as we ride the entire line from Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City to Headquarters Plaza in Morristown by the Green. This was my second time on one of the new motorcoaches that will soon be replacing the bulk of the old MCI fleet that dates back to the early 2000s.
I have to say that I was quite impressed with the smoothness of the updated powertrain, which is a Cummins ISX12 (425 hp and 1450 lbft torque) with Cummins C-brake (jake brake) mated to an Allison B500 Gen V 6-speed transmission. We do hit the governed top speed of 70 MPH while on Interstate 280 just after the 1st Street on-ramp merge (26:10). The updated engine brake software makes stops much smoother; instead of the jake brake being constantly set to a specific level of output, the brake output varies depending on how far the brake pedal is depressed by the bus operator. This means that there is more constant and active blending of the engine brake and the air brakes.
The Cummins ISX engine shares some auditory similarities with, but doesn't sound exactly like the old Detroit Diesel Series 60; the quality of the base is a bit throatier with the Cummins. Additionally, you can hear the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) adjusting as the engine returns to idle speed. To hear more of this powertrain, go here: • Community Coach HD [Au...
The seats were also of a different quality; the cushions do not sink as far down, but instead stay firm at the points where you want your body to be supported. Overall, I can say that I'm looking forward to the bulk of the 1100+ order coming in to replace the old MCIs on NJT and Lakeland (among other carriers). Enjoy the ride =)

I miss the D4500s we had at Gray Line NY. They switched up to the J4500s but they were destroyed after Hurricane Sandy, and they never replaced them. All we have now are the Alexander Dennis Enviro 500s, Trident 300s. And a few converted old New Flyer Low Floor buses.

This sort of reminds me of the old Transbay Terminal to freeway to Bay Bridge, route the buses in San Francisco used to take.

Quick note. The 170xx buses are actually 2017 buses. The year code in the VIN is H which means 2017. MCI builds buses for the next model year beginning on August 15, IIRC.

I'm leaving this as 2016 since I am going by manufacture date, not the model year.

Very similar to major Detroit automakers which start the new model year in August (usually). But some of the 2008 NJT 7100s have build dates as early as May 2007 and the 17186-17240 series for Lakeland continued well into September 2017.

Pardon any lack of geographical knowledge I may have, but as far as I know, as soon as you leave the Port Authority and cross through the first tunnel, you're in New Jersey, right?
I've been wondering then what those MTA buses going the other way are doing there, those three Prevosts. I know MTA has had express routes heading into NJ but can't find information about them. Never been to the tri-state but one of the interests I have in this area is bus and train routes operated by MTA, NJT and SEPTA that cross state borders. Which route are those Prevosts running, and have you ever gotten video of the route shotgun like you did with this one? That's something I'd sooo love to see. Thanks in advance.

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes that is correct, once through the Lincoln Tunnel after leaving the PABT, you are in NJ. The MTA buses you see using the Lincoln are operating on Staten Island routes via the NJ Turnpike. I have not shot those routes from a Prevost, but I have from the Alexander Dennis Double Decker (Enviro500 SuperLo) when it was demoing with the MTA last year.

@@FanRailer Ah, thanks! :) That's actually very interesting! Kinda reminds me of some train routes in Europe (I believe Deutsche Bahn) that cross national borders for a short distance before going back into Germany, travelling inbetween two German cities. Think it's that Austrian line that's only connected to Germany that that happens on.
Definitely will be one of the bucketlist routes for me to film if I ever go down there.

I never understood why a public transit company needs Greyhound style buses. I also noticed there were no tollbooths near the tunnel. I didnt know the Holland tunnel was free. I always loved taking the turnpike to NYC. get to see a lot of great stuff.

The Rail Shooter those are our buses that go there. Shortline bus owns those routes. The way Shortline works is, if the route is longer than 1 hour in or out of the city, we require the bus to have a bathroom. Also the 17K series buses are owned by NJT and don't want their buses to go past our New Jersey routes.

It's too bad the MTA is doing away with MCIs and replacing them with Prevost Car x3-45s. Gotta love how the Volvo D13 SCR EPA 10 12.8L engine sounds with the Allison B500R6 Gen IV transmission though.

Is Community Coach a good line? I already know that Rockland Coaches are literally the worst thing in existence. I feel like the passengers that ride those lines should get paid to ride on such a bad line. Yes their new coaches are sharp looking but when they run over 2 hours late and have a rude driver (like most of the time), you can say no more.
