Can you put modern lighting on a Springer? Harley Davidson Softail Cross Bones LED lighting

- My 2008 @harleydavidson Softail Springer Cross Bones is perfect in every way but one. The headlight was a like a glow worm in a jam jar and I couldn't see anything going down the highway. I immediately knew I needed to figure out an LED headlight for it and that @customdynamics would help me out, but it turns out there is another issue related to the rubber isolators in the headlight bucket that I would need to figure out. Thankfully Custom Dynamics makes the kit to fix that (www.customdyna..., and they even provided me with an adaptive headlight that helps you to see through corners (www.customdyna.... We finally get that all sorted out in this video, then we finally get the gremlin / guardian bell properly mounted up that Mrs. Monkey's sister grabbed for us.
Another option that I like is Figurati Design's guardian bell with an included hanger. I saw that @sikbaggers installed one and like it, so here is the link info he provided in his video:

Crazy thing about that bell, I bought my previous bike maybe 10 years ish ago and at the time was gifted a bell, my wife asked what in the hell it was, I explained it to her. Keep in mind she isn't a biker lady, doesn't ride with me etc. Fast forward 10 plus years, I order my Indian...3 days later she hands me a package. Sure enough she bought me a bell. I was blown away that she remembered 1 conversation from 10 years ago right after we first got married. She even got a kit with those little mounts you showed. I just about teared up when I opened it all up lol.

My bell was bought for me from a member of your club that shall not be named but here in Oregon, she put it on my bike while i was doing paperwork.

Coworker just got his motorcycle license and first bike, went to the dealer and got him a bell. Guys at the shop were wondering why I bought another man “jewelry”. So story time begins and by the end they all got it and understood, except for the boss who wanted to know why we were standing in a circle “holding jingle bells”. I said “that’s it for the safety meeting” and we went marching into the mine as we call it. Probably had to be there but it was funny!

I was able to squeeze an Amazon LED headlight in my Crossbones bucket...took some convincing though...might have to pick up this kit for peace of mind...thanks for the knowledge!

I too noticed the dim headlight as I am restoring my 1988 heritage Softail Classic. I installed a led headlight and it was bright and noticed how dim my running lights are now in process of installing led running lights. I really like the adaptive headlight you installed.
You can get the correct resistors from Custom Dynamics also. I used them on my 1995 Heritage.
@@ProfessionalMonkey that will be the next step. I finally set aside time at my shop to get the bike back together. I did a top end due to a blown head gasket along with other repairs. I installed a Paucho 2 into 1 with a fish tail. It felt great getting the bar hooper back on the road. This way I can reduce the mileage on my street glide. I enjoy your channel

If I told you that new light, light bucket and ring was a $1000.00 Canadian would you believe me, I slid my 09 bones down the highway and replaced that whole assemble. Rode home cryin. Have Guardian Bells on all of my Harleys, my lovely GF bought them for me.
She selected each one to match the corresponding Bike.
A Chrome Bell for the shiny ‘14 Heritage,
Matt Black for the ‘17 Iron 883 and ornate silver ones for the 2 Cross Bones (‘08 / ‘10)
She also bought me Lanyards and Keyrings for each Bike.

My wife purchased two ride bells for my 07' Fatboy that I purchased in July 2006. I attached them using leather on the bottom of the front down tubes. I had these bells on the bike for 11 years, replaced them both due to the dong inside the bells wearing out. These new bells hang from leather strips attached to the bottom of the engine guard. The new ones I can hear when hitting bumps in the road and speed bumps. I have had at least one gremlin bell on each motorcycle I have owned since 1982. I have two gremlin bells suspended from the mirror in my truck, one of them is the Harley Davidson Skull bell like you showed in this video. Best of luck with your Springer.

Never heard of a guardian bell before.
I swapped out the 5 inch light that came on my Wide Glide and put a 7 inch with an LED light with the day marker ring. Talk about a huge upgrade. Well worth the time and money figuring out how to upgrade !!

I ordered a pro beam for my fxr yesterday.
Co-worker bought an Indian last month. I took him to the dealer to pick up he bike, and bought him his first guardian bell while we were there. He thought it was a joke, damn millennial. I explained the reason and he graciously accepted it.

Im in Australia and have been using gremlin bells for years however like someone else said not everyone knows about them. We gift our new member a gremlin bell on becoming a member.
I have to admit, it looks awesome!!!! I upgraded my lights on my '02 FLHTC to LED and it was night and day difference!!!! It's nice to be able to see, to say the least! Lol. I'm in Wisconsin, so there's deer 🦌 issues, I installed The Hornet deer avoidance system, and I'll admit, it definitely works, in my experiencees!!! Great episode!!! I enjoyed it!!!

I run a black out 7" LED headlight, on my 07' Fatboy, makes a big difference, as my stock headlight had smoke inside. Bought the new headlight in January 2018. This light puts out much more light in both day and night. I run it on high beam during the day for extra safety. I just installed some Custom Dynamics front turn signal LED's, with the white light outer lights, and center amber turn signal leds.
That is a definite upgrade for my 07 Fatboy there's no difference between high beam or low beam day or night right now.
Picked up a crossbones yesterday this video has helped me a ton!

I live in BC Canada and have a bell on my bike. The lady who owned the bike before me gifted it to me. Thought it was cool of her to do it.
I’ve owned 2 springers. I would change to that light in a minute. It’s great to be able to see cuz like you the original doesn’t give good light
I want a Crossbones as my bar hopper as well. I have a Street Glide but a Crossbones just hits right for me.

I have guardian bells on both my bikes and I haven’t had a problem yet (as I knock on wood)! Very cool headlight! I need something like that for my ‘03 FatBoy. I know exactly what you went through bringing the new ride home in the dark.

Great stuff friend and I just put all new CD on my 2000 Road King Classic for the same reason, amazing they have the adaptor for 22 year old bike.

I'm sure most of us love looking at classic cars and bikes, but the fact is the "Good Ol Days" were not as good as we once remembered. This is especially true where brakes, lights and comfort are concerned. In my opinion, if a classic vehicle is driven regularly, why not make the modifications needed to keep yourself safer and or the vehicle running more reliably.

For anyone looking for a crossbones, there is one available at southern devil Harley Davidson in cartersville Georgia. They call it a “mechanic special” and I think they are asking like $9,000. Just FYI.
LED is the way to go, have one on mine and found it to be a night and day difference. (get it?) My bike had so many Gremlins when I bought I actually named it "The Gremlin" My guardian bell IS a gremlin.
Like you, I bought a new 2005 FXSTSI and rode the crap out of it for 7 years them the stork flew over…
Now after two stork visits I finally grabbed a ‘98 FXSTS last week. I always hated the bounce and weakness of the headlight. This bike came with bags and extra bulbs…oh boy🤦♂️
I love the Springers headlight and I am looking into options already.

You forgot the part about pot holes being created by the gremlins when they fall off. Also, the makers of bells will tell you you will get the effective amount of protection from a bell you by yourself, but a gifted bell has double the protective power.
Better to destroy the classic look on the Springer by being able to see than to destroy the Springer by wrecking it at night.

I'm wanting to put an led in my evo heritage but can't decide what ones. Eagle lights makes one thats thats still a reflector I've been looking at still looks old school sorta. I will check out custom dynamics
I personally like the head light at least miss monkey can see when she is chasing you around the parking lot. Also the tank emblems look good on the stretch tank covers.
GUARDIAN BELL!!! That's what that is....I bought a SGS recently and saw them on it and was gonna take it off because I didn't know what they were. Well, I guess I can assume that it's been gifted to me with the purchase of the bike.

Here in South Africa the guardian bell (gremlin bell) is only known by the old school guys. Not widely known but it's getting better
I am gonna have to look for a Canadian dealer for that light and kit as I bought an 11 last summer and light does suck.

FTF for real haa! F the damn allen bolts too. My street glide is an 07 and every time I need to work on it the damn bolts strip. And its an AZ bike so no rust either. Love the bikes, hate the bs

Just upgrade my h4 , to an led , not a fancy adaptive headlight , got it from my local shop , plug and play , I support local as much as I can , it is a much improvement , from the h4 , work with what you can afford , I know what I wanted based on a led car I owned , so I knew what I was looking for , light wise , and I am happy with the conversation , price was fair , and I installed it in less than 5 mins , a good upgrade for sure function plus safety ,

The bucket is the same for decades so I would imagine.

Had problems with the same isolator bolts on 08 Softail Custom. Had never bought anything from CD before and I had looked everywhere trying to find replacements. I ordered that same kit and was not impressed at all. Like you said it was just some air line cut up, the pieces I got were all different lengths, and three bolts. I ended up throwing those away and fabricating my own bolts with stuff from the hardware store.
Interesting headlight, I would'nt mind seeing a clip at night. I went more traditional on my springer with just the LED bulb swap. Any improvement to a springer you can do is HUGE considering how restricted a springer is. Everything & I mean everything is custom not just a bolt on. wish i could share a pic...P.S., ive been riding sice the 60"s & i must not have any friends cause i have never had a bell LOL !!

Even up here in Canada where we be jealous because its winter most of the year , we do have bells. Lost mine 1 time and was freaked out riding till it got replaced.

Interesting fact, Directional Headlights for cars originally debuted in 1948 on the Tucker 48 (only 51 ever produced). It had a 3rd headlight in the center line of the body just below the hood that used a mechanical gear attached to the steering linkage to point the 3rd light in the direction being steered. Preston Tucker was a controversial figure in the automotive world and a lot of political reasons prevented the success of the Tucker automobile.
Spot on! I watched a documentary a few years past on the Tucker, lots of safety features found their ways on these cars that were way ahead of their times. The third headlight was one of them.

Good job with the light install. HUGE difference before & after, especially with that halogen that had gone brown. I do wonder what difference would be with a fresh brighter than stock halogen bulb, though. Some of us have to go the cheapness route.
You would need to swish a bunch of alcohol around inside the headlight, that would get rid of a lot of fogginess.
@@ProfessionalMonkey Mine's actually very clean. I suspect the housing was replaced some time in the past few years but a standard bulb was used. I'm looking at a Silverstar ZXe to make things brighter if there isn't a real LED replacement bulb for halogen reflectors.

Lovin my 03 Anniversary FXSTS! And yeah, the headlight is/was "substandard." My issue wasn't the candlepower - that was ok - it was the fact that the darn thing bounced up & down like crazy. I can only imagine what oncoming drivers thought... I made a wedge to secure it. Problem solved.

I think they are 2022 cvo emblems? He said in the last video.
They are 2022 Road Glide or Street Glide Special emblems. You can order them at the dealer. Make sure you get the left and right one since the curvature is different. Like $65 each I think?

I have an LED headlight on my Ultra limited but my 69 FLH shovel is, well almost unrideable at night. I’m wanting to put LED lights on it but some people are going be asses about it.
Anything to make it more ridable, and it's not a permanent mod.
The version of the Angel Bell, as I was told, is the sound just keeps the road gremlins off/away from the bike as you ride. That the location isn’t so much important as the fact of having it period. Sure it’s a bikers myth/wives tale and there’s a million variations lol. My opinion as long as you have one and you didn’t buy it for yourself, you’re good 👍🏻

Headlight revolution here on TH-cam has a really good video on 7 inch led set ups.
Btw look into the redemption springer fork. Might be worth it for the looks but better performance. Uses dual ohlins shocks/dampers and springs like coil overs.
Zero design works also makes a similar fork but looks kinda weird.
And the redemption since it's ohlins you can probably get something for the actual shocks that let's you control how progressive it is and rebound and compression for fine tuning. Should provide alot of handling and braking performance over a regular springer.
