From the video, you often noted that the notes in the higher octaves are sharper. Would using a different barrel help with that, and 'flatten' them a little?

Is there a minimum reed strength that would allow high notes? I'm on a 1 and it doesn't seem hard enough.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It depends on which clarinet & other material you use. Also your embouchure & the music style you play.

Deniz, on a saxophone, for example, which (usually) has a much larger tip opening than the clarinet, playing in high octaves is more consistent, and is easier with a good synthetic reed. Synthetic reeds vibrate consistently under high air pressure. Legere reed is a good choice, Hartmann Reeds too, Forestone, etc. I suggest you try a similar approach on a clarinet, at least to boost your confidence that you can do it. Then you explore whether you like the overall sound of the synthetic reeds in other registers of your instruments (some synthetic reeds are really, really good).

Thanks for this good video! How do you play this high notes when you have to start very quietly?

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Ka Wi Great that you asked! The more piano (quiet) you play, the more air pressure & support you need. And you need to find the right syllable : open throat, tongue position etc. I‘m going to mention them in the next chapters of High Notes🙌🏻 thanks for watching, stay tuned!

Thank you! What's the sizes of your mouthpiece patch (cushion) and reed combination? I squeak like a mouse when attempting to play anything above C6. 🐀

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

David Noguera I use Vandoren combination: B40 mouthpiece and V12 Nr.3 reeds :) my clarinet has also facilities to reach high notes in my opinion. It has a homogeneous centered sound on each octave which helps me a lot!

It gets a bit difficult above contra C..

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes but with a little practice you'll get it ! You probably need better air support and stable+relax embouchure :)
