I Took the Apple Watch 5 plunge from the Apple Watch 4. Always on, compass, and 2 gigabytes pretty much only difference. Nice to have newest version, but I agree with you the nostalgia wore off quick. Haven’t needed extra memory really and haven’t even used compass yet since I got it. Always on is good but at $200 probably not
Insidious Apple discontinued the series 4 when the series 5 came out, so carriers had to stop selling the series 4 too once their remaining stock ran out. I guess greedy Apple thought they were going to hurt the sales of the series 5 if they also left series 4 in the lineup because the difference between the two is minor and many people would opt for last year’s series 4 instead of the series 5.
I just got the series 4, coming from series 3 and I absolutely LOVE IT. The design, it’s nice and flat and the bigger display. I figured I’d get series 4 over 5 because their basically the same except for the always on display.
While there are only TWO noticeable upgrades (always on/different finishes) the series 5 is a joke when compared to the series 4... Sure it’s an upgrade from a 1 or 2 - but if you own a 3 or 4 it’s a definite skip

I upgraded from series 4..We only have the GPS version available in B NZ so having the extra storage is great - I love it for my audio books and music. I also swapped from silver to space grey which looks really good - the always on display is also great so very happy with my purchase👍👍
Double the memory alone is well worth it. Huge difference. Better battery life and compass. The always on is dumb. Mine is set off. Why use battery when you are not even looking on it? It’s like leaving your TV on when you leave the room.
I just picked up a refurbished Series 4 Nike+ 44mm from Apple directly for only $319. Much better deal, if you can live without the few new features. Apple referbs are pristine condition and come with the same warranty as a new item.
James Garland don’t forget refurb item basically got QCed twice . There ppl only buy refurb item. I have 2 laptop, they work solid. 2011 mbp and 2017 mbp(no keyboard / display issue at all)
Brandon, can you comment on the display brightness difference between the two. As I’ve aged, my eyes aren’t as good with low lights. Any of your senior friends find this to be an issue? Thank you
I think it should be make clear that the $200 price difference is from S3 to S5. Right now, for instance, Costco, has the S4 for $330 (closeout) and S5 for $515, so only an $85 difference. AOD, for me, is worth it. But then, I am upgrading from a S3 (which I got at closeout for $200 last year), so S5 is a lot of new features like fall detection, EKG/ECG, noise meter and memory. And, of course, AOD.
Oh, i forgot to mention, with WatchOS 6.1 beta I am getting the same overall battery life as my S3. And for phone attached workout tracking, the battery usage seems to be about 1/2 of of the S3 battery life during workouts. Sweet!
The Apple Watch would be so much better if Apple just put a good sized battery in it...don’t get me wrong, I have a series 6 and it’s absolutely amazing, it’s just kind of annoying to have to charge it every two days
Why would anyone want to turn off Always On? How about if you wear your watch while sleeping and tend to lay your arm under your head. No matter how dim, in a dark room, it can be blinding.
Brandon: Don’t you think that buying a Series 5 (over a series 4) also has a higher intangible value as great new features are unlocked by future upgrades to Watch OS that will not apply to older Watch Series (i.e. due to obsolescence)?? Apple continues to improve older models a la IOS 13 and Catalina for example but only apply to recent models.
I found an Apple Watch Series 4 LTE/GPS (New) that is $20 cheaper than the Apple Watch Series 5 GPS only. The thing is my country doesn't support LTE on Apple Watches yet, so I don't know if I can use the Series 4 as GPS only despite the fact that it has LTE. Which one should I get? Weird... my Garmin Felix lasts 10 days with an always on color display, HR, gps, workouts.. in all honestly I’ve owned both the AW4 and Garmin, and they are very different watches... Despite being deep in the Apple ecosystem, I oddly felt too connected with the Apple Watch, and I didn’t like having to charge every night.
steve9348 not necessarily, the AW is a smartphone on your wrist with fitness features, and the Garmin is a rugged explorer/fitness watch with awesome battery life.

I'm not interested in the always on display so I won't be getting rid of the already brilliant Series 4.
As a nurse I was excited for the always on display feature. Didn’t know the second hand goes away, that’s what I need when taking vitals! 🤦🏼♀️

it is sapphire. Only the “cheap” (cheap according to apple, that is) aluminum models lack the sapphire display. All other models do have it.
