Thankyou for this , didn't know picts was latin for painted 👌 Urien of Rheged was also an important figure in the battle against the Saxons Also included the Antonine wall built in pictland that many don't know of, great stuff 😊👍
I am sure the Picts were only named in Caledonia not in South Britannia. The Greeks and Phoenicians had good knowledge of Britain and used to trade with them all the time for copper and tin. It’s a debate weather the Saxons took Britain by force. When the Vikings conquered the left destruction which there is mass evidence for due to the terrain marks left in that period of time. There is no evidence of destruction the period the Saxons began settling. It’s more likely they were given land by the Briton landlords to fight off northern and Irish raiders and began interbreeding with the populations. There was fighting later on obviously which is why the Britons were pushed into wales, Cornwall and Cumberland but not near destructive as the Viking period.
There are indeed several meanings about the Picts. I am inclined to believe that the Romans originally referred to all the inhabitants of Britain as Picts. The Romans considered themselves to be the center of civilization and usually were not interested in the real names of the barbarian peoples. For example, depending on which side of the river Rhine they observe, they are divided. Those who lived in the eastern Rhine, they automatically evaluate the Germans, regardless of how these peoples call themselves.
@Adam No evidence of destruction with the Saxons "settling"? Wow... True enough that the Germanics sought land for farming - however, it is not a human characteristic to surrender what one has (for any reason) to warrior strangers ... especially those of a different language and culture. (The open Southern Border of the USA is a nwo anomaly) As to interbreeding...Roman soldiers, too, were great at that, especially since they were often assigned to be quartered in the homes of conquered families...
uhhh...Rome was still pagan in the first and second century, they didnt start trying to make anyone christian until Constantine in the 300s. Yes Christianity had been kind of present in Britain before that via traders etc but the Romans themselves werent doing any of this officially.
Mate the saxons justes and frisians was actually hired by the romano britons to help hold back the picts and Irish raiders once that was accomplished the Saxons thwn turned on the britons claiming most off the land north of wales that's why the scots and welsh hated the saxons so much we pushed the welsh celts all the way back to that little corner of our island
Germanic tribes can't just be translated to Germans, Germans are among the Germanic tribes but it's a term including all the people north of the Romans Empire including Scandinavia where the Germanic tribes once came out of, the Angles and Jutes as shown on the map were Danes, the Saxons and Frisians who were not mentioned came from the Netherlands and the most northern part of Germany, dna have shown Anglo-Saxons are very similar to modern day Danes and Dutch, and indistinguable from later Danish Viking dna
@ussrwrestling People are not defined by physical bloodline alone... possibly more blood has been shed by similar people of differing views (in the British Isles...) than anywhere else on earth.
@Mark Do we really know what they called themselves? Both names seemed to have been assigned to those people by the conquering Julius Caesar and his self-identifying "civilized" tribe from the South...
The Irish were known as the Scotti by the Romans, later they invaded the west coast of Scotland and formed the kingdom of Dal Riata..Easy to see why these peoples became called Scots later, and they spoke the Gaelic language which is of course todays Irish.

Nice, finally someone covers the period ^^
All good in this video, the voice, animation and flow of information. Many thanks, keep going!
The Anglo-Saxons did not conquer Britain, just the part of it that became England. And that took centuries.
Very informative. I learned a lot. Thank you

nice video, I just realized that the Saxons were not the native people
How did you just realize? It's common knowledge.
Good job editing this video. Reminds me of old school PlayStation rpgs

Yes Christianity had been kind of present in Britain before that via traders etc but the Romans themselves werent doing any of this officially.
My takeaway from this, is that Wales is the residue of the former Romano-British culture.
magnificent, divine.
Wow, thank you!
