Something that I love is that they very easily could have just made all of Heaven evil, a bunch of self-righteous pricks passing judgement just because. But instead, they establish that the angels we know, Adam and Sera and the rest, aren't even involved in Divine Judgement. They're flying as blind as the demons are, but unlike the demons, they also have to constantly pretend to know what they're doing because Heaven and the souls within still need to be protected (or at least, so they assume). It makes the issue much more nuanced than just "angels bad, demons good".

@falsnamae3511 I mean sure but that kinda assumes both that there is a readily accessible way for demons to reach heaven when they want, which afaik we have no evidence of, and that the majority of people in hell would abuse such a thing and heaven would gain nothing from it. It’s kinda the same rhetoric of a country saying they need to shut down and heavily police their border because that other country is full of nothing but criminals that want to destroy their way of life, except worse because it’s active genocide.
Plus the mere existence of Adam, Lute and to a lesser extent the other exorcists prove this isn’t a one way thing. It’s just that all the crazy murderers in hell get to vent their desires by murdering demons.

I think it's a cool full-circle moment from the pilot that Angel was actually being good when they checked in on him now. @@undertakernumberone1 maybe it's the time gap between this and the pilot, but it feels okay to me as far as pacing. We saw Angel go through a lot this season, especially in episode four, but it does seem like they have to speed things up for the sake of limited episodes.

    • @undertakernumberone1

@@Wolfwood2057 it's not only episode number but also length. Afaik Invincible has only 8 episodes but 40 minute or more episodes.
Come to think of it, maybe they had the "Adam cuts the time in half" thing in Episode 1 to have an in universe excuse for that pacing: Charlie is feeling hunted by the deadline and so she rushes it. (at the same time, it kinda reminds me of hte Futurama Episode "time keeps on slippin". Stuff happened and now, int he episode, the cast skips ahead in time every now and then... but they don't remember how they end up in the new situation. Just that with HH's pacing, it's primarily the viewers being left out)
FOr me, HH really feels like a show that should have... at least 16, if not 26 episodes as eason. Like, when watching the pilot, it really felt more like it was setting up something more... intimiate, where we'd follow the characters more closely
I wish the current second episode was actually the THIRD. I think it could'Ve been nice for Ep 2 to be Charlie sitting down everyone at hte hotel together and have them talk about:
      What their real name was
      What they did in life
      How they died
Why (they think) they ended up in hell.
With the reaosn maybe being that Sir Pentious is new and doesn't know them (as people).
It wouldn't even have needed to be particularly long for each character. Angel, Husk and Sir Pentious could've had the "normal" scenes, Niffty and Alastor have the "creep out everyone" moment and Vaggie leaves gaps in her story.

You see that Hell under Lilith's influence seems to be preparing for an uprising. From what she understands, countless of innocent souls could be lost. People who did good deeds in their life. Being in Hell is punishment enough, being killed again is just cruel.
If no-one in Hell is innocent they are already being punished by their imprisonment there.
Which is a fruitless distinction since the question about Sinners isn’t about innocence, it’s about redemption.
As for Adam it’s clear the system is broken in a one-and-done instance.
He’s also the inverted example in contrast to the Hazbins.
Instead of being a young (relatively speaking) Sinner who rehabilitates themselves despite their environment he’s an ancient Winner (I think that’s what he called ascended mortal souls) who has indulged in his eternal reward and ruined his moral character since he has a luxurious lifestyle in Heaven but also no fear of Hell.
Because he’s already passed the ticket barrier ,tautologically, whatever he does must align with being good since he’s an Angel right? He’s internalised his own vices as being acceptable by Heaven’s standards since his very existence is proof to him that he’s got the right of it.
But since the question of Heaven or Hell is decided at death and no point after, it’s clear that who he was at his death is a far cry from who he is now, who frankly acts no differently from the majority of violent hedonistic Sinners.

The "Welcome to Heaven" song has lyrics that mention how it's "another happy day in Heaven", a direct paralel to Charlie's "I got the feeling that today is gonna be a happy day in Hell". And the "You didn't know" song has a repise of "Hell is forever".
Also, there are similitudes between Lucifer and Sera: they want to protect their young ones, but in doing so they are harming then in the long run. Lucifer distanced himself from his daughter as a way to prevent her from becoming a dreamer like him and getting broken by Heaven, but in doing so Charlie grew up desperately trying to prove herself to be worthy of attention. Sera knew that her younger sister was a dreamer like Lucifer was, and tried to protect her by lying to her, otherwise she could end up fallen like Lucifer, but now Emily knows the truth and no longer trusts Sera.

Based on Sera's reaction when Emily asks why Angel isn't in Heaven after he showed himself getting better, she does know what allows a soul into Heaven. And it's not their virtue.
My theory is that it's obedience. Adam is clearly an asshole, but he never strayed from the path set for him by God, so he was allowed past the gates of Heaven. Lucifer is a decent guy, at least to Charlie, but he was a rebel cast out for not obeying his father.
Sera even hints at this when she tells Emily not to doubt their system or risk falling, as Lucifer did. You can also see absolute fear in her face when Emily denounces Heaven during her duet with Charlie.
Bringing it back to Angel, we know that he does not have a good relationship with his father and likely rebelled against his mob family parents many times throughout his life, including the fact that Angel's father apparently disapproves of his sexuality.

The best detail is that *_Most of Heaven doesn't know about the Exterminations._*
And that, if Em's reaction to finding out about them is any indication, they would be VERY AGAINST them if they knew. Sera straight up said it had to be kept secret.
Hell sucking ass on it's own merits is one thing, but their own deliberately going down there specifically to make things WORSE is another? Those in Heaven would absolutely revolt against Sera.
And the best part is that the only angels totally on board with the Exterminations are Adam and the Exorcists... Sera only allows them to do Exterminations because they have to avoid the rise of the Damned somehow, and she legit doesn't believe there's another way... it makes her feel terrible and the guilt is crushing her but she doesn't see another path to take.
But Charlie rattled her, and so did Em. They made points she couldn't argue down or refute and hit her RIGHT in the doubt about the Exterminations, and showed her firsthand that Sinners can reform... Angel clearly wasn't Heaven-ready but he alsoclearly and undeniably wasn't as bad as he used to be. He WAS reforming, and steadily. Charlie was right, and Sera couldn't even directly refute her without lying to herself.
She likely only ruled against Charlie because to do otherwise would be to admit she was wrong, and all the atrocities currently eating her alive from the inside out with guilt would have been PROVEN as unnecessary as she hoped they weren't because she needed to tell herself that to quiet her ever-mounting guilt about it.
She would have had to face her guilt head-on and at this point that is too much for her.
But she might have a change of heart, because of Charlie. She might intervene and stop the next Extermination now, once she emotionally sorts herself out, and manages to admit Charlie's way could have merit and maybe the Exterminations aren't needed after all.
And if she doesn't? EM will. She's not cool with the Exterminations, and as I mentioned most of Heaven probably isn't, too. She isn't gonna keep it quiet. Given Hell's vast population growth compared to heaven in the story, practically every soul in heaven must have people down in hell they'd want to see again.
If the populous learns of this, the riots in heaven alone might tear down the regime before a single hellspawn can even begin marching on the pearly gates.

@CrazyJabberwock Yeah. Sera and Adam's 'solution' was a ticking time bomb set to blast Heaven into an unwinnable civil uprising the moment they implemented it. They might think otherwise but this was always going to explode in their faces... it wasn't an if, it was a WHEN.
That secret was eventually gonna get out.

@CrazyJabberwock Sera and Adam's 'solution' was ALWAYS set to blow up in their faces. It was never a matter of if, but of WHEN.
You can also tell it was entirely Adam's plan, because only an impulsive dimwitted jerk like him would be unable to see the potential backblow of the plan coming and legit think it was a good idea.
Sera is the one who insisted on the secrecy because she was the smart one who saw the local danger of the news getting out... she just didn't think there was another way and so went along with it.
I feel kinda bad for Sera.

    • @GuukanKitsune
      @GuukanKitsune 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@falsnamae3511 I doubt that. Sera legit loves her sister, having to cast her down would destroy her totally given the unstable emotional state she already is in trying to swallow the guilt of her complicity in the Exterminations.
Especially since she knows full well she would be falsely casting her own sister down because while she won't admit it she knows for a fact Charlie and Emm are RIGHT, and her conviction in the Exterminations being necessary at all is not just fraying at the seams but actively unravelling.
She would be unable to cast Emm down any more than she is able to decide personally who goes up and who goes down.
If, right now, she has to chose between her sister and something she hates, is no longer totally sure is necessary, and feels so awful about, she is gonna choose her sister.
The only negative outcome that is reasonably plausible is Adam overthrowing Sera and taking over Heaven when she tries to intervene... an outcome that would only be a temporary state of affairs because he ABSOLUTELY will be destroyed in the fighting of the next Purge due to his inability to not participate in it and the fact that he will NOT stop going after the Hotel until either him or it are destroyed.

I fucking love your reactions, you really understand characters and situations!
I want to point out that during Adam's and Sera's discussion, Sera reveals that going down once a year to kill Sinners was ADAM's idea; he likely lied about an uprising when he, like an incel, is probably petty because both Lilith and Eve dumped his sorry ass.
And now, thanks his lies and Sera's paranoia, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy of an uprising. We still have scenes, voicelines, and the song from the S1 trailer, "For the first time in our lives we are ready for it!"

  • @RifterVix
    @RifterVix 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

You know, going back through the episode... Sera mentions that she wouldn't have agreed to 'your yearly activities'... meaning... it *wasn't* her idea to have Exterminations in the first place. And that fact she's clearly terrified of the demons having an uprising... when so far that we've seen... hasn't been happening (as far as we know at least)? It was just demons being unruly as normal and the Overlords keeping things in working order and trying to minimize the impact of damages and death their numbers are having each Extermination Day. None of them have been looking into war without knowing how to kill an Exorcist . They never knew they could be killed in the first place.
The only ones hoping to have a war are the Vees but that's mostly it. Perhaps Lilith after having enough of Heaven's bullshit, we don't know. Lucifer for certain wasn't looking to rip Heaven a new one, just protecting the native born demons and his own daughter.
So where did the idea of Exterminations and stating that Demons were going to uprise come from? Did Adam create the Extermination process, throwing the idea of a demonic uprising at Sera to justify the reason to kill the Sinners out of anger at Lilith and Lucifer? Because he felt scorned at Lilith's rejection to his control and then Lucifer offering the Gift of Free Will to Eve? Lucifer lost the will to dream so Adam sees as a win over him... but Lilith *thrived* in Hell and that probably upset Adam. Here he was getting the easy life and freedom to do as he wishes in Heaven; but she was having a blast in Hell, not at all suffering as Adam hoped.
So was the Exterminations Adam's way of trying just to taunt or provoke Lilith?
Who knows, it's all speculation on my part, so I'm very likely wrong lol

I would agree with this except Adam really just seems too dumb to actually come up with the idea and justify it, not to mention he seems rather obedient to the angels despite his natural rudeness.
Given that multiple archangels, several of which we haven't seen yet we're shown in Lucifers song I think it's more likely one of the more violence or retribution roled arch-angel's came up with the idea and saw Adam as the perfect motivated useful idiot to carry it out and got him to suggest the idea.

    • @RifterVix
      @RifterVix 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

That is true, since there's really no hard evidence to suggest it was Adam. Sera just didn't like their yearly exterminations but had to be done to cull an uprising.
Though if the Angels in the courtroom were all the Elders with Sera at the top... none of them seemingly knew about it. The only ones that were suppose to know about the extermination process is just Sera, Adam and Lute (as well as the Exorcists) since no one else in Heaven was suppose to know. And they all seemed surprised that this was going on at all, especially during the song, Sera looks back at the other Elders in surprise now that secret was out.
Then again, perhaps maybe a few of them did know but faked in being surprised but we're not sure.
So both ideas can be on the table, since its speculation. lol Though I gotta wonder who was it that gave the idea of there going to be a demon uprising to give reason for the Extermination if it's not Adam that suggested it on his own?

I think this secret was far too important to her to risk letting slip (especially to Husk knowing how likely it was to get back to Alastor, who could have potentially used it against her).

I really love the perspective this episode has on using heaven and Adam as different aspects of Christianity.
As a Christian myself, a lot of people assume Christian is life has to do toxic Christians, very controlling, very biased, very discriminating. In reality, those are just stand out more. In reality, most Christians are like Emily, kind, caring, and accepting. I love how they show that not all people in heaven are like Adam, as only a few people know about the exterminations and are surprise when they find out.
The one thing I love though, was just calling out the hypocrisy of toxic Christian. The whole thing about no one really knowing what gets you to heaven, Because no good deeds can make you get to heaven when you’re alive. God loves and cares for everyone so much that he died and he just wants us to do better and improve. Ironically what Charlie is just trying to do. So when a toxic Christian, discriminates, belittles, and sins themselves against other sinners, but says it’s different for them because they are Christians and perfect. They are straight hypocrites.
“He without sin cast the first stone” we’ve all sinned, and thanks to God we don’t die from it, it’s what we do to improve ourselves and others that makes us good people, and it’s all that God wants. Definitely really love this episode.

Maybe, in general, being supportive of Charlie, maybe even having a lot of this intended, but having it play oout on its own, sometimes giving small nudges into the right direction, but leaving people, angels, demons, to try to get their on their own (Free will and all that).
Heck, maybe part of this could be that the intention was to teach the angels some humility.

It’s trying to fight the “black and white mentality” view of morality that defines a good chunk of people, even outside of religion.

Y'know, I remember reading somewhere that the early days of the church and Christianity had hell as more of a rehabilitation thing, where you suffered penance until your soul was cleansed of sin and then you got to go to heaven once you'd paid the price for your sin. The idea of penance while you're alive was that it was a way to sort of have 'time served' to reduce how much time you had to spend in hell. Over time, though, the church moved away from that doctrine as the heads didn't like the idea of sinners getting to get into heaven, so they made it where 'hell is forever'.
Hell, in the book of Revelation, it says that everyone will be brought back to life in the end times and the final judgement will occur. This would be completely unnecessary if there was no way to be redeemed after death, so it's still a remnant of the rehabilitation aspect of hell, that in the final judgement, those who haven't finished paying their sentence would be judged one last time to be able to get into heaven before everyone was tossed into the lake of fire and locked away.
It could be that this is what Lucifer was talking about when he said 'he's tried all this before', that hell being rehabilitation in the early church doctrine was Lucifer's idea and then it being retconned into being forever was his idea being turned down.

Of course in truth this was never sustainable, cracks in the system were already showing, and the moment Adam decided to accelerate the time table, that only accelerated the ruination to come. Because now Hell is being backed into a corner, Key figures now know a sinner can kill an angel. Even the rulers are in a gray area, with Lucifer being a soft dreamer, but gave up on his people, while Sera has her people's safety in mind but is handling it with brutality and lies

I would even argue while being a killer, due to circumstances, she's not necessarily a murderer. Of course, you could argue the other way. There's a fine line between definitions. The actions are still very real and weigh heavy on her. Husk did call Vaggie out in episode 4 about how she's very judgemental cause she hates herself. Also, I'm more worried how everyone outside of Charlie is gonna take this at first.

Seen a lot of people react to Emily saying "thousands of innocent" and go "I mean they're not exactly innocent" in some form or another, and I'm like. No no, Emily's perspective is probably right...
In Emily's mind. She just heard everyone in the court, herself included, confused in what makes someone go to heaven or hell, or, stay in either.
which meant that innocent people could be going to hell. Cause innocence, or being innocent / good etc, might not get someone to go to heaven. It might not even be the same for every soul. They don't know. Not even true angels, "non-human soul" angels, know.
It is interesting, though... that Adam was the first human soul in heaven....
There should have been other souls... at least... potentially... before Adam's
That is if the descendants of Adam are still the same and generally the same story for their human lives...

10:06 to kind of add to the messed up situation in this scene. The whole thing that got Vaggie punished was sparing a child. No one will care or lift a finger to help if you stand up for yourself, they’ll take you handling it as an excuse to ignore the situation, but if you give your enemy a platform they’ll just incriminate themselves. If you can tell they’re going to go off on some abusive tirade, lure them into the open and watch them crucify themselves before a jury of their peers.

Now they meet again, and he goes to the club with her without question. While she does push him to do drugs again, the moment she realises that he is actually serious about rehabilitation, she backs off, tells him she's happy for him, and that if he ever needs her she'll be there.

I theorise that Lilith is the one who revealed how to kill an angel to the weapon dealer, & she knew Charlie would push the angels to action early hence sending Alastor soon as she heard the broadcast of it from pilot.
Also Angel Dust is the key, & will ascend via sacrifice to save Charlie. Therefor showing everyone it is possible and we may even see what he looked like as a human.
I also suspect Lilith did not make a deal with Alastor, but instead possibly offered him one. By helping Charlie and keeping her safe, Lilith might have promised him a one of the highest ranking seats below her.
Also knew Vaggie was not *spoiler* a demon, but never thought she was an ex angel. I suspected she was like some kind of old school Valkyrie.
