Fun fact about helldivers 2. One of it's main balancing features is friendly fire.
There's 2 different fronts in the games galactic war. The Tyrani- sorry Termanid Front (the bugs) and the Automaton front (the robots). you fight for SUPER EARTH the completely democratic and totally not facist in any way one world government.

@3:05 - Someone played HD1. There was an achievement for 25 capespins in place on the bridge.

So happy Kit finally learned of the beauty of DEMOCRACY! Helldivers 2 is an amazing game that is very similar to the movie Starship Troopers (shame my computer cant run it. i need to upgrade it. I NEED TO SERVE SUPER EARTH) You are a brave Helldiver, helldiving with your squad to planets controlled by automatons or bugs to spread the meaning of liberty, freedom and above all Managed Democracy through pure force and violence! You are definetely not serving an authoritarian state that sends you to this planets for the sole purpose of exploiting their resources, nothing like that, whoever says otherwise is just an enemy of democracy... FOR SUPER EARTH!

Democracy was preserved - as "managed democracy". Super Earth decided that not everyone can be a politics-expert. So they developed an algorithm that chooses the candidate you vote for.
The templin institute has a nice video in the lore of Super Earth, the Helldivers Human faction.

For a much more rounded Rubix Raptor vid, if there is one to recommend, I would say his "Is Helldivers 2 a dream game?" Vid for sure. It is a in depth view and analysis vid of the game as a whole as well as a bit of a peak at the team itself, and is my favorite helldivers 2 vid of his, anyways cheer. 👍

Okay Kit. Good news.
You do not need a lot of time to play this game. 40 minutes is the longest time alloted to complete a mission.
As for gameplay. It's very responsive and kinetic. Heavy guns feel heavy. Strategies are impressive to look at. Objectives are varied. Biome's are diverse.
Lore? Much like Doom, lore is there... but not the forefront. Most of it is community based, as far as HellDivers 2 is concerned. HellDivers 1 lore can be found in shorts and lore videos across TH-cam.
Opposition to democracy comes in 2 (soon to be 3) forms. Termanids and Automatons. Bugs are our source of oil. Bots are a cheap labor force.
Bots rebelled and the bugs got free. The rest is war.
The game itself is fairly cheap at 40$, and it does have an in game battle pass, as well as a premium battle pass. The premium currency can be found in game and acquired via the free2play content in amounts that if you want to play fully free, you can do so.
It's squad based, though solo play is possible. It also has a thriving meme community as well as developers that care about the game. It is also still getting more content. It is currently available on PC and PS5. Crossplay is available.

some people might've explained the termanids and automatons - I haven't exactly searched through the comments - but I think it's been hinted there'll be a third faction joining the war in the future. The Illuminate, I think they're called. psionics and psychics, I believe. as if Helldivers didn't already have enough on their plates with murderous space robots and giant bugs everywhere. and the best part is the Game Master that helps decide how smoothly things go is an actual person instead of an AI. I don't know what all he's done since I haven't played the game yet, but I imagine he's able to buff enemies, give stratagems or something along those lines
The Helldivers are an all volunteer force of brave men and women over the age of 7 that fight whenever the need arises for the best of the best to fight against the Automaton Menace and the Termanid problem. Super Earths Armed Forces (SEAF) has done its best, but The helldivers are there to mop up and ensure Liberty is given to all.

I think a good way to put Helldivers is Starship Troopers: The game, but with elite forces and leaning into the tropiness of it. Give the trailer a watch! It does a pretty good job of prepping you for what you're experiencing at base level.
Helldivers takes inspiration from Starship troopers the movie, Warhammer 40k and Halo.
Super Earth is the main government of Humanity united by Managed Democracy and a Helldiver is an elite Shock trooper of Super Earth.
The main Two enemies are the Terminids aka the Bugs and the Automatons aka Communist/Socialist Terminators
Super Earth is actually a xenophobic, fascist, dictatorship. So yeah we're playing the bad guys lol.
At the moment there are 2 factions players go against - Terminids (bugs) and Automatons. "Soon" the Devs will also add the alien race from the first game, so there will be three factions to go against then.
I've not been involved with this game for long so do not know the details of the lore, but general gist is that it's some fictional time in future when Earth seems to be one single Super Earth. No countries as such, just one big planet, with one big government and one society. They handle things through "managed democracy", which essentially means that people don't vote for anything. They answer a questionnaire and then the automated system decides what the vote will be, based on "analysis" of the answers. In other words, the rulers decide all but say it's through the choice of people. People are hyped and brainwashed with the idea of democracy, though as many would say, it's borderline fascism masquerading as one. Anyone blindly following them is called democrat and anyone who even doubts a single word is marked as traitor.
Bugs, Terminids are alien race which apparently can produce oil naturally, so naturally government took an interest in them. They've formed these "bug farms" on numerous planets, but they cannot really control them too well as bugs can burrow and often escape these farms, kill off all the farmers. Which results in military moving in, mowing down the bug population while calling it a "fight for freedom" but never really eliminating the threat for real - because they want the "element 710". Where 710 stands for "oil", if you read it backwards. So there's lots of shooting, culling bugs and pushing them back into farms and circle repeats.
Automatons were made by cyborg race who lost the war to Super Earth, from what I've heard. So cyborgs are imprisoned or some such and automatons try to get them out. This leads then to constant conflict on those worlds as Super Earth and Automatons push each other back and forth trying to assert domination. Neither side really wins the war so far since Super Earth cannot push too far out as they need to keep their supply lines operational and also deal with Terminids and Automatons not gaining supremacy as they don't pack as big of an armed forces. So it seems to go back and forth. Not familiar enough with the lore to know what's the whole basis of conflict with Automatons - due to cyborgs or is there something more, like the "element 710" with bugs.
And the aliens which will come, seems like they were a power in the region at some point, then Super Earth started it's expansion and eventually these two collided. War started which was won by Super Earth and everyone assumed that the aliens were defeated and left for good. But it seems that they were just gathering strength and now are aiming to come back and in force.
And finally, the Helldivers. Cannon fodder... I mean, soldiers of Super Earth. Game actually shows a statistic at the start of the tutorial: average age of a Helldiver is 18.7 years, expected survival rate is 21.3%. Their "training" is basically a small obstacle course, quick run through basic weapon usage and control, usage of stratagems (special attack), then they're hyped up as "you're invincible, greatest soldiers there ever was!", given a gun and sent to the war. Where they will perish soon after. Game is pretty ironic and satirical in that sense and depicts this kind of over-hyping pretty well. Makes me wonder what's the citizen count of Super Earth, how they can keep up the numbers of these recruits. They must be seriously overcrowded. In any case, game itself is absolutely fun. Note that it's by far more fun with friends, solo game can be done but it's not that fun, not really designed for that. But, in a team going in with guns blazing and stratagems exploding everywhere and wave after wave of enemies rolling towards you - massive fun. Can recommend personally.

I'm gonna get execute for this, but the truth is Helldivers is an eighteen years old put through 20 minutes bootcamp. A bootcamp that survival rates less than 30% and put in cryosleep then sent to war on a super destroyer.
Super destroyer is loaded with bunches of these recruit popsicles and ordnances equivalence to 2000 megaton of TNT.

So you wanna know about us Helldivers huh? So as you already know we spread glorious democracy for Super Earth through the galaxy and we currently face 2 problems. The first problem are the bugs or Terminids. When our ancestors about a 100 years ago encountered them, they immediately attacked us humans without provocation so we waged righteous war on them, but it was soon discovered that they produce a great fuel so instead of opting to eradicate them our ancestors instead domesticated them in enclosures to fuel our mighty armada. This is where Helldivers go when they want a vacation since we are only trying to get the unruly beats back under our control.
The second problem is the real war. On the other galactic front we are fighting the Automatons. They are a bunch of commie robots who hate democracy and want to utterly destroy us so we have to be faster than them. There is a very high chance that they are related to a human splinter group. They caused vile acts of terrorism on innocent voters and augmented themselves with disgusting machine parts and called themselves the Cyborgs. This happened at about the same time the bugs were discovered. Our ancestors defeated them in valorous combat and put them to work in mines on their home world of Cyberstan for the glorious cause of freedom and democracy!
