    What I really admire about Wayne, since the time he was a youngster, is that he's always been level-headed, had good judgment, is blessed with good common sense and he always said the right things. He's a great Canadian and was raised by good parents. He's an athletic superstar and prodigy who's never acted like it.Few and far between.

      @@travzimmerman1340 - don’t feed the troll. Gretzky never touched coke in his entire life (other than Diet Coke). He was always the one going home early and taking care of his teammates and making sure they stayed on the straight and narrow (as much as possible). He would be the one telling the guys to get home to wake up and prepare for the next day. He was the main leader off the ice too.

    Wayne is just a good and sensible man. Very humble for being the greatest hockey player of all time (at least by statistical metrics; I do wonder how much Lemieux could’ve put up if not for injuries and cancer). He was always just a good person. No scandals, no braggadocio, and no selfishness. I would like to see him try coaching again.

    Gretzky is a true class-act of professional sports and one of the all-time greats. I still remember the Pro Stars cereal from the 1980s and then the subsequent cartoon of the same name from the 1990s with him, Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson! Good times.

    I've been a Rangers fan my whole life, and I realize Wayne was 38 when he retired and maybe had one or two years left, but the Rangers really helped accelerate his retirement. Number one; when Gretzky signed with New York, he NEVER imagined they wouldn't keep Mark Messier. Number two; they didn't surround him with players who could best exploit his gifts. The decision to not keep Messier after 1996-97 was one the team didn't get over until after the lockout in 2003-04. Neil Smith deserves lots of credit for ending the 54-year drought, but he was really slow to see that the game was changing towards bigger power forwards. We always had a surplus of diminutive older forwards who lacked physicality. It's ok if you have some forwards like that, but they can't all be like that. In that sense Neil Smith's drafting history was checkered.

    • @messngretz
      @messngretz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been a die-hard NYR fan all of my life as well as a Gretzky fanatic since childhood, so Smith signing Gretz in summer of '96 was a dream come true for me. Smith was trying to do anything he could to get them back to a Cup Final and win one more before all of the older players like Messier, Leetch, Graves hit the wall...Smith tried hard, I give him credit...he was even doing it prior to Gretz's arrive, bringing in guys like Pat Verbeek and Ray Ferraro, but they just didn't have the teams to get back to the Cup. The one trade I hated and he should have never made was sending Zubov to PGH.

    • @dzanier
      @dzanier 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh I hate that trade too. I didn't like them not resigning Verbeek, but it could be that since they signed Gretzky they didn't have enough for Verbeek. He would've fit well with Gretzky. Trading Ferraro, Nordstrom and Laperriere to LA wasn't such a great tradeeither. One thing I noticed as the decade of the 90s dwindled down was how the Rangers were a small team. Smith always drafted small. All in all Smith deserves loads of credit, but he made some glaring mistakes too.

    • @amazinmets8439
      @amazinmets8439 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The Ferraro trade completely derailed the 1996 Rangers. Ferraro that year played so well with Messier. Zubov trade was obviously horrible. Smith gambled in 1997 thinking he would get Sakic, never imagining Colorado would match the offer sheet. He lost that gamble. The Rangers and Messier himself were never the same after 1997. Jagr and Lundqvist brought the team back to respectability but it took many years.

    • @dzanier

      I have to say I'd forgotten about the Sakic offer sheet fiasco. You're spot on with everything you said.

      yeah that trade with LA was Smith again trying to hit another HR with the former Edmonton gang, getting Kurri and McSorley...they exited in the 2nd round to PGH in '96, unfortunately.

    That is exactly how people should live their lives... Once you are done doing something you love (usually when you are younger) then you live through your kids. You support them and let them grow into something that they love. What I wrote here, is how everyone should be living their lives... But I see a bunch of broken homes this day and age. It is like people cannot do what Wayne says here, they cannot get over the fact that you cannot replace that "happiness" from previous hobbies. It is sad that they cannot be content with their lives and take responsibility in making sure their children get the same enjoyment out of their own hobbies... Then you get they parents that force kids into unwanted activities, which are just as bad.

He also had a vision and a hockey sense that can’t really be taught and that’s what would transcend any era. Pavel Bure and Joe Sakic were faster than him. Peter Forsberg was a better dangler and had way more power. Yet Gretzky still out scored them all while they were playing in the NHL at the same time. His otherworldly vision was just that much better. It’s the same reason he outscored the 2nd leading scorer on his own team by 107 points in 1982 (the year he scored 92 goals).
