I'm soo tired of people saying to invest in "quality pieces". I have h&m shirts that have lasted me over 15 yrs. And I've bought expensive bags that lasted me three months.

i agree, and even with ‘poor quality’ shein clothes. I haven’t bought from them in years now and definitely won’t again but the few things that i got from there have actually lasted me. And i’ve worn them several times a week, washed them so many times too. I think if you are careful with ur clothes they can honesty last forever.

Delayed gratification 🫶🏽🫶🏽 I’ve always been mindful about finances but when I started having more money I noticed that sometimes I was buying just because and went back to budgeting and when I really wanted something and buy it… omg!!!! If felt so good and excited ✨✨ a feeling I thought was gone

I follow your same philosophy and even a step further. I have only 7 outfits for summer and 7 outfits for winter.
1 for each day of the week making my wardrobe as minimalist as possible.
All filled with expensive pieces but but investment pieces where I do not need to replace them until they fall apart and break.
This has saved me so much money from not consistently buying cheap broken pieces every few months. Saving up and buying a quality item is actually saving you so much in your financial future !! Good video

FINALLY a video on shopping addiction. I think when most people think of addiction, they think drug addicts, but shopping is one of the most common forms of addiction.
The reason why there's so little criticism about this type of addiction is because it *benefits the economy* . Capitalism doesn't care if you're miserable and addicted. In fact, it promotes it to make money! Imagine how odd it would be to watch a haul video of bottles of booze, or an advert for shooting up drugs, yet excessive shopping is so normalised. Ppl don't even question it. They don't even draw the connections that its the same feedback loop as drugs:
    >Get a hit (buy clothing)
    >Feeling great/high (looking cute)
    >Come down (clothes go out of style)
    > Craving for new high (new trending clothes)
    > Get fix (buy more clothes)... and repeat.
This realisation woke me up. Saved me money. Stopped me chasing a high. Made me happier.

There’s a line between having lots of trinkets (I think it’s called maximalism) and being a hoarder. I love having many things on my shelf to look at but they all mean something to me. My grandpa was a hoarder. I like my place to look lived in but not unlivable.

This is a great conversation. Also, it's leading me to thinking about times when we need money for something more serious -- like a car problem, health problem, need to travel to help a family member, etc. -- having money available for those things gives flexibility and resilience. Having the proper things to wear and take care of ourselves is important, too. But as you said, quality. And not just buying on impusle.

Just a thought though, tops from forever 21/zara and all americans call "fast fashion" has lasted me over 5 years. So I think how items are handled are also a factor here. Not just "buying from cheap stores". Because 1. Zara and forever 21 are expensive and not cheap. And 2, it just seems like people are not into taking care of their things nowadays.

I was pretty good at not shopping excessively until the pandemic. I would order things online just to feel something. I can afford it financially, but I hate how cluttered my house gets. It got so much worse when I hurt myself and couldn't run and do yoga like I used to. All of a sudden the healthiest thing I had to look forward to wasn't available to me anymore, and shopping went from a secondary coping mechanism to my only coping mechanism. I spend so much time watching videos, wanting things, thinking about shopping, putting things in my cart, taking them out, wanting things, feeling guilty for wanting things, etc. And now it is a habit the way that working out used to be, and I struggle to fit an effective workout in. One thing that helped was uninstalling Facebook (yes, I'm old, lol), and trying to not feel guilty about doing things that only serve myself. I, like every other human being, deserve to be cared for at least as well as people treat their pets. Which means I deserve eating food in a quantity and balance that makes my body feel good, to sleep when I am tired, to exercise in a way that supports my goals and my body, to have an enriching environment, to be loved and cared for, basically. When I am shopping or thinking about shopping all the time, I don't have time for any of that, but when I focus on caring for myself in that way, I don't have time to worry about shopping. I know which I prefer.

    Extra clothing advice:
-always wash cold, unless you have a specific reason. heat breaks down the fibers faster
-don't use fabric softener on synthetics, and use them sparingly on natural fiber. Fabric softener contains polymers that bind to the fabric and make it more fragile. If you're doing it for the static, use a dryer sheet.
-find a style that speaks to you on Pinterest or another place that doesn't require spending money. it doesn't have to be your favorite, but it needs to be the one you see yourself being the most consistently happy with. For me that's a sort of earthy modern boho style.
-don't let anti consumerism become consumerism! don't throw out all your current clothes for a new capsule wardrobe
-once you figure these out, consider replacing a friend date at a restaurant with thrifting together to make that time going from store to store feel more meaningful. If you're choosing a restaurant because you're hungry, try getting lunch somewhere more affordable than a sit down restaurant, but still nutritious, like a grocery store deli. Eat in the car, or at a park.
-Learn to mend! "a stitch in time saves nine" as the saying goes.
-In addition to mending, I've modified most of my more resilient casual clothes to fit my wardrobe as my style shifts over the years. I always have acrylic paint on hand for crafts, and a bottle of fabric medium costs about $10 online, or even less at some craft stores. I'd only recommend this if you already know you like painting, though, to avoid buying an exciting sounding thing that you realistically won't use. Dark fabrics can be lightened with bleach for a grungy, acid wash type look, or even tie dyed! It's hard to tell what color they will lighten into, but black almost always lightens into a stonewash grey, and then a blush pink with yellow tones depending on the concentration.

I wish people in their 20s would realize they have a very high chance of being laid off in their 30s. Technology has pretty much decimated every field that was prevalent in my 20s and every single person I know has been laid off multiple times. By the time you hit your 40s you are considered old news and it becomes extremely difficult to get hired. At most you’ve got 20 years to save up for the long drought of sporadic or nonexistent employment. And trust me absolutely no one wants whatever junk you’re buying and you won’t even remember those expensive boozy nights out.

I´m going through this right now. I was never a spender, but a certain thing happened in life that made me feel... empty and sad. And now I´m trying to focus on myself and shift all of that into me to feel good and happy. I have never taken care of my style and what clothes I was wearing so I thought it was about time. But this goes hand in hand with spending too much at once even though I don´t really have the money for it now. I´m really trying to just feel happy at the moment because I don´t have the patience to save up for a trip, I can´t wait that long, because I´m already feeling low about myself everyday.

It’s easy to say “don’t buy in IKEA” to people who maybe can’t afford furniture made from bubinga wood.
Also there are people who do not want to wear the same top for 10 years…
Overconsumption is obviously bad, but there are also people who have 100 luxury bags they don’t really need. And if you buy from SHEIN it usually not necessarily a purchase of 100 items.
So everything depends a lot on each case

For people who wear spf and/or foundation, it's advisable to wash it off with an oil cleanser, since a regular surfactant-based cleanser won't completely remove ingredients. this causes clogged pores or inflammation. and they will have to spend more money and time to solve this...

Oil cleanser is effective for removing makeup. Now like dont be influenced too hard though, the brands are all about the same. I DIY mine on the regular using a little beauty chemistry know how, I use whatever oil I might have (coconut, olive, grapeseed) and add 10% polysorbate 80 I got on amazon. The same polysorbate 80 has lasted me YEARS and I have instantly ready, low cost, re-fillable oil cleanser :)

I used to buy and buy trying to get a dopamine hit. The closest i got was in the checkout. Never felt excited when it arrived. I barely buy anything now. Ive saved money for a home deposit. Have personal savings. I almost got talked into buying a cashmere wool and leather jacket the other day spur of the moment. Almost caved coz i was like thats good quality. Then i went no ive always wanted a shearling jacket. I wasnt planning on buying a winter coat this year so I'll get that next year (its winter here now). Im just kind of over the over accessibility of synthetic fibres and chipwood furniture. It doesnt last and looks cheap.

Oil cleansers are not to clean oil out of the skin. It breaks down product differently. You can use the same cleanser twice but people have different needs. And reading up on what you’re talking about is an option.

Buy things only from fizical places, where you can feel the material try them on, have a clear perspective on what you do.Saves you the time to return it. Also, think of the world you are in separate from the one everybody else is and realise what is what you trully like without anything influencing you at all

I am trying to avoid impulsive shopping and now that I’m thinking about past I’m realising how much I spent on crap things I don’t even use or just threw them. Every single week there’s a new blush or perfume coming out and I used to get everything. I regret not spending that money on my wardrobe or shoes atleast I would have something to wear rather than throwing out an empty perfume bottle. Perfumes are so expensive man I went to that rathole and finally realising what I’ve been doing. Unfollowed every influencer coz all they do is promote overconsumption specially these fragrance influencer they describe fragrances as if it would change your whole life, get u a man, make u rich. Lol. So glad getting out of it.

I get your msg but what if I am a lover of variety. I don't like to stick to something for very long. I love to change. Be it furniture, clothes, shoes, anything...I love different colours, patterns, textures. I love to every now and then, maybe in 2yrs, change my wall colour, sofa. Clothes wise, I'd rather have 10 tops of variety than stick to few pieces, repeating it for years. Yes, I do save $, but I also believe in spending it the way you want and yes, everybody is different. At the end of the day, when we die, we can't bring it with us. Might as well, enjoy our money after working so hard, instead of just keeping money in the bank . People say things can't make you happy but for me it does make me happy. My variety of clothes, shoes, bags, household stuff...I enjoy them all.

Altho I agree w you on dont buy 10 SHEIN tops cuz youll have to buy more later cuz the quality sucks. I do think I've convinced myself too many times to spend more unessesarily with the intent of having it for a lifetime. By that I mean, I've bought tops that are 400$+ but are no better quality than my uniqulo 100% wool tops. There is a point where money does NOT buy better quality it kind of plateaus at a certain pricepoint. Additionally I like trying trends from time to time, I prefer trying trendy products that are a bit cheeper since im not sure it fits into my wardrobe and lifestyle yet. But 100% agree SHEIN is a no no. Trying things on helps with not overcomsuming trendy items even if its not the exact item you want.

My only thought for the beginning is the warning that just because the top is $100 doesn’t mean it’s going to last you 10 years.
Don’t buy into the lie that expensive = durable or well made. There are people who from grandmas generation to today, have some knowledge of what makes a well made garment and will last. Some of whom actually go into high end brands and judge the new products to say what is well made vs shoddily put together and not going to last.

I only own one Stanley in which is officiant for my needs and use it for cordial drinks for fizzy pops I use a collectible cinema cup in which I purchased two by myself.
And cinemas are also catalyst for overconsumption by selling collectible movie tie-in merchandise you see influencers on TH-cam buying dozens of them for there display to show off.
And the other being conventions where there’s tons of stores that sell
Merchandise from various franchises that they make tons of money from customers at these events.
