DM being as possessive as he apparently is, I am not shocked his past 3 relationships didn't work out.

While I'm tempted to give the GM some slack (some people just have lousy luck), it's also possible he just got too possessive and ended up alienating them all.
Either way, I think we can agree he blew his chances and generally made an idiot out of himself.

An observation from someone who's confident in claiming to have been a player/DM longer than at least half of the other commenters have been alive (35 years): it's been my observation that, with VERY few exceptions, DMs/GMs fall into one (sometimes two) of three categories. The first is the ones who REALLY want to play, but nobody else is willing to run the game. The second (the best, imo) is the ones who genuinely enjoy creating a fantastical world and sharing it with people willing to participate in it. The third, bluntly, is the control freaks, the people who use running the game to "assert their dominance" over the players. Based on the background info given, the DM in this story is most assuredly in this last category, and OP is far better off putting as much distance between herself and him as possible.

Sounds like she went above and beyond what she needed to do. She even tried to save the relationship. He just wouldn't put in the effort. Best outcome she could have hoped for in that point in time.

The weird thing is I've seen this trope of "female players lie about dice rolls" a lot on Mann Shorts videos but played with a twist. The female player is the Power Gamer, the Min-Maxer who builds the most broken characters and takes advantage of all the systems. Her low rolls pass what ever checks are needed and she always does massive damage.
However, she is not above lying about her rolls to ensure she is always the one doing the most damage or causing the most chaos. She has been called out on it by other female players and the DM on occasion, but, again, because she's the Power Gamer and not a "female player."

Tbf, while yes its not good to be cheated on, having a previous relationship end early bc of bad n possessive behavior is a good clue that majority of those relationships were probably at his fault. Whether that comes down to someone just wanting to find someone else or being the final conclusion on their sexuality, if all you do is push people away n be generally awful then there is nobody to blame but yourself. This isn't a trust issue, this is a self issue

It felt naive to hope that this end with a positive resolution for the entire group, but even I was shocked by how out of order DM's behavior was at the end. I still hope that the girl still stayed in touch with the other guys, since they seemed cool for standing up for her.

A DM cannot demand to roll for a player. Inform the group and tell him no.
DMs are not special, they can be and should be replaced when they prove unfit.
In my experience, guys have been the ones more likely to lie or cheat about dice rolls as well as being more likely to try to rules lawyer the mechanics to some advantageous interpretation. Most women that I have played with have always been honest and accept the rules as written. Perhaps it has to do with maturity, I have been playing this game more than 3 decades...

    • @addison_v_ertisement1678

What are tou trying to say with that last part?

    • @craigtucker1290
      @craigtucker1290 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@addison_v_ertisement1678 That males seem to have some fundamental need to "interpret" the game to how they believe the game should work, like some sort of ego thing. Such has been the case since the game was first created, and there are still grognards trying to rules lawyer the game to be what they "feel" it should be on the old school forums trying to convince others that is the how the game is supposed to be played (dragonsfoot for example). The sad part is that many have been playing the game incorrectly for so long that they literally have no idea how the game is supposed to be played, yet are positive that their way is legitimate.
This is not the same as homebrewing, but rather an inability to recognize they have been using house rules, understand what the rules actually state and just as importantly, what the rules do not explicitly allow. In my experience, more female players seem willing to accept the rules as written and not try to rule lawyer some bizarre interpretation just to gain am advantage. They also, in my experience, seem less prone to cheat.

      @craigtucker1290 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@addison_v_ertisement1678 LOL, that isn't sexist, but nice try.
It is just what has been my experience that a certain group tends to "interpret" the rules and try to cheat more than another group does, typically. It has more to do with Western culture and how we are raised than it does with anything innate to the sexes. Guys are taught that losing is bad and not to be a loser, even if it means cheating (which only matters if you get caught) or bending the rules. There is also the power dynamic, which is more common to makes to abuse power when they have it.
These are facts and just the reality of the world that you apparently don't like. Perhaps you are one of those types seeing your "interpretation" of sexism...

  • @thibni_

    Oh my. 😶
That is some serious self destructive mechanism that this DM has.
Not being able to reflect on yourself, to do some introspection and reconsider who you are as a person when people confront you about it and instead you just go RIGHT back to your behavior when they all told told you to to change yourself and then you blatantly shove it back in their faces by telling them that THEY need to think FOR you?
    They aren't your lackeys...
I've been DM for a year now, I took the Leap.
    It wasn't easy.
But I've been doing my best to be as fair in every opportunity and moment.
To not put one player above the others but to bring the group together as much as possible. ❤️

What a misogynistic jerk--he acts as though he were a perfect angel who did no wrong when he was dating OP---it really makes me question his stories with what really happened with his past girlfriends seeing as they only got his version of events. And he really does sounds like one of those guys that when their girlfriend breaks up with them and tries dating someone else, he goes around calling them cheaters even though they aren't together anymore.

I feel like leveling with everyone was a good start until the end. Fwiw, I think the answer he needed was to check himself and his biases and trust issues at the table (and with his friends in general)
Unfortunately he handled that the worst way possible and it's doubtful he'll salvage it. Glad op found another group

Having gone back and relistened (Yes, Crit did cover this story before), there are key differences between both him and AllThings. For one, Crit does a bit of a moral compass/interjection into the story between his experiences and how he feels they should be handled whereas AllThings tends to stick to the story then offer a bit of commentary in the end. Both awesome creators that I appreciate and enjoy and will continue to listen, whether the story is covered already or not.

Yeah, this DM really needed a reality check. While he might be unlucky with his three relationships, he had no right taking it out on someone else, and his misogynistic opinions are his own fault. Plus, his explosive reaction at the end shows he just wanted to do something simple to be forgiven and have it all be water under the bridge - IOW, he might have been ashamed of his actions, but he wasn't willing to put the effort in to improve, just do something and expect things to blow over. That, or he wasn't really remorseful and just wanted to do something to please the group and get it over with, effectively never changing.
So yeah, OP tried her best to make the GM see reason, but he just blew up in her face. Good on her for finding a better group elsewhere. The rest of the players weren't bad, but the DM made the whole thing not worth it. Hope he enjoys sabotaging the rest of his relationships for the rest of his life, because he clearly can't take a hint.

Yeah, this story, where she buries the lead:
    Small town
    Dated before
    Bad experiences
Just can't give up on the group though uwu
I come from a small town, taught K-12 in small towns, play D&D, am female, and dealt with the usual everyone has a crush on me garbage where I made it clear I was just there to play and didn't reciprocate. It's not fun. But starting the story off with, "The DM's just being sexist, IDK why he's like that, here's some examples..." and _then_ explain the situation? Makes me both not trust her and scream at her to be more responsible, have a backbone, and stop letting people walk all over her just so she can get a fantasy fix. There's no excuse for not setting boundaries, beyond choosing to we manipulatable... and again, been there done that with diagnosed anxiety/ depression/ ptsd with a dumb hourglass that ruins the table if I'm not careful. No excuse though, if you don't respect yourself you can't expect others to respect you.

The DM clearly wrote some things he shouldn't, but the player in this case is taking this "lack of trust" thing to an uncomfortable level. Sometimes we say and write things without thinking, but to not even try to ask for an apology and rather be vague on how to regain trust and turning his friends/other players against him is actually diabolical. Since they have had history together, so I'm pretty sure this was some sort of revenge.

He turned them against himself by his own poor behavior. He didn't do the work to fix his own poor behavior. It wasn't too far because this was years worth of problems he wasn't fixing. Letting the dog bite you for years means you have to go big to get him to stop. In the end he was given the chances he deserved to fix the problems and he chose not to fix them because it was hard.
