To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.

Mike M LOL if you think those are “extremely major flaws” I can’t even imagine wtf you think actual problems are. People take the most nickpicky shit on the planet and then act like something is unusable because of it 😂

    • @MikeMPharmaCyclist
      @MikeMPharmaCyclist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@philorgneopolotin8762 there's a large chasm between your ridiculous statement that I claimed the headphones were unusable vs observing the lack of very basic desirable features at a high price point. These Apple headphones are perfectly usable, but for $550 there's far superior products in all respects except noise cancelation. Try some real headphones, you'll thank me. Maybe the Hifiman Deva Pro BT planars unless you really need closed back with noise cancelation; $330 of wireless bliss. It's mind blowing but they support USB-C, aptx, and LDAC! 😂

Great review as always Joshua, it felt very balanced. Happened to be watching/listening on my Mobius (having just finished WW84 - nonsense movie but great workout for my headphones) and was pleased to see you mention them with regard to the spatial audio. Not an Apple fan, but very happy to give credit where it is due and would be interested to hear these compared to the Sony ANC cans (of which I am also not really a fan) - yes, you're right, there is a big difference in price but I would be willing to pay a premium for truly great ANC (which the Sonys have) and a pleasing quality of sound reproduction (which they don't, IMO). Thanks for continually pumping out reviews which are entertaining, throrough and trustworthy. Hope 2021 is very good for you :)

Good review Josh! Although I take issue at 9:50 when you said a main goal of audiophile headphones is to sound like a pair of speakers in front of you, I do not think that is the goal of audiophile headphones, but I suppose its a matter of opinion. Also, on the topic, have you heard of the Smyth A16 Realiser? Oratory said on a post that he could not distinguish if a sound was coming from a speaker or his headphone using the A16. It definitely seems like the kind of tech you would be interested in. Cheers!

Btw Josh... there is an interesting, but kind of hidden feature on the AirPods Pro that you might want to look for on the Max
The Pro has a certain degree of EQ that is located under Accommodations-headphones. It is under accommodation because it is designed for hearing impairment. As such, it is not a general purpose EQ. But it does allow boosting the high end and adjusting the degree of boost. Interestingly... it is also possible to adjust the volume of the outside sounds in transparency mode in this setting section
Voices- the voice issue that you mention might also possibly be addressed in the accommodation section by turning in the “voiceEQ”... and setting it to the lowest impact ... worth a try

I heard the abyss guys saying that those aren’t all that loud because apple’s probably limiting the volume to prevent the driver from distorting.
So does that mean the drivers have reached its limits when it comes to eqing and tuning?
Do the airpods max have an ambient sound mode just for voice? I remember the Sonys having them.

This review is looking very professional, good job ! Also great description of the headphones itself. Thanks for it. I would like to ask for advice. I have been using Samsung Galaxy phone with Sony XM4 through LDAC which was great experience, however recently I had to change android for iOS with AAC codec.. which unfortunately decreased sound experience of my XM4 drastically with iOS connection. Then my question is, does it make sense to replace XM4s with Air Pods MAX ? Will ecosystem of apple utilize AAC connection in better way ? similar as Samsung scalable codec ? or is better to buy a player like SONY NW-A105 and keep XM4s for now and in future use potential of the player with some good wired headphones ?

  • @Akaite79

Thanks for providing the comparisons to audiophile headphones, especially the 6XX. I feel like the Airpods Max is audiophile pricing without audiophile quality in exchange for features I've had available for years on other devices and I never use. The passthrough, for example, sounds like a great technical achievement but it's so easy to just pull of your headset. Most of them seem like technologies built around edge cases.

What you touched on there is why I'm seriously considering these. I've found myself deeply invested in the Apple eco-system. I had a Sony Vaio that needed major surgery in terms of parts replaced within the first three years, now on a 2014 MBA with 1450 charge cycles that still has solid hardware. Hinges, keys, everything works just like when it was new. That's what you get with Apple.
Now, I just have to convince myself that I need these when I already have a set of AirPods Pros.

It’s BT only... so what codec or standard or whatever is it using 🤔
I would look if I was buying but think it’s a good thing to include no matter what

How does it compares in terms of sound against good sounding anc headphones like the Momentum 3 or the PX7 ?

You consider the PX7 a good sounding headphone? It’s very colored and bassy.

Review the B&O H95s! Then compare them to the Airpods Max, it'll be interesting to see.

Always appreciate the level of attention and detail in assessing all aspects and elements of the audio/user experience when evaluating a product of this caliber. The thing that many underestimate is that this is a general overview and experience. What is most subjective is the user themselves. The type of music they choose; the type of format (quality)/device they choose to listen from, and lastly their age/condition of hearing (quality and detail diminishes with age - biology). I do think, as with most devices within the Apple universe these are at the very least 15 to 20% overpriced. An accomadation that most Apple admirers/supporters are willing to accept and pay for in continuing to compliment their 'universe'. Great job Joshua as always. Thank you.

I love your videos. Would you do a video on thrifted HiFi? I set up a pretty solid mid-fi system for $50 with a used Technics SL D202 turntable, a Yamaha RX v590 AV reciever, and two kenwood 6 inch speakers. I would love if you had any advice for thrifted systems

They sound great. It’s just the volume. They just don’t get loud enough and I might return them. Need to try the xm4s and see if they get louder.

I'd advise you to go to your iPhone settings, then Accessibility, and Headphones Accommodations under your device.
There, you can personalise the EQ behaviour, to some extent. That's what I did on my AirPods Pro, which sounded a little bit too flat. Now they are much brighter. I don't know what it would be like on the Max tho, because I haven't listened to these, but it's worth trying.

Is right grey/left black color your aesthetic signature? I thought your Max unmatching ear pad colors was cool, only to later realise its not actually your own but a loan from Jonathan. But then later realised you have a similar color scheme for your speakers in the back. Very cool of him to match it if that's the case.

The only true comparison is between the APM and the B&O H95, these seem to share similar build qualities and features, way beyond the consumer churn that are the Sony, Bose and others. I have the Bowers & Wilkins PX7, Bose NC700 and B&O H9i and it’s easy to tell that the AirPods Max are in another league as such they sit at the higher price point.
From my personal experiences owning all mentioned, I can say the AirPods Max are the best I’ve heard. And I completely agree, pass through / transparency mode is outstanding, it’s like hearing everything around without headphones on, you have to hear it to believe it. Great video. 👍

Great review as always, and I think iPhone listeners with no other devices will enjoy these. I was hoping they'd also sound good with my hi-res player when on the road, so the lack of a 24-bit codec is a deal breaker. Hopefully Apple will come around to apt-X HD one day.
