General Butler gets my vote. Not for his Medals of Honor. Those were subject to far different criteria back then. He gets my vote because he told the truth about how big money attempted to overthrow the United States Government. Read his book "War is a Racket." Priceless.
no lie GI , he has no price on his chest he was never for sale butler is the man , taking away nothing from his brothers but for me it's butler , ortis , carlson , and a few others whoses names are known to the corps
All three Generals were outstanding leaders in their own respective era. General Lewis B. Puller should have been awarded the Medal of Honof. Although General Smedley D. Butler received two Medal of Honor in two different combat events, but he had a fallen out of the Marine Corps due to his outspoken criticism of the military industrial complex. Major General John A LejeuneI brought the Marine Corps together after WW 1 and standardized our Marine Corps Birthday. I didn’t service during their era but if I had to choose one during my era from 1972-1994 it probably be General Alfred M. Gray and General James Mattis. Both of whom I have served with during my time in our Marine Corps. Semper Fidelis Marines
I’d say Gen. O.P. Smith. If it wasn’t for his instincts and leadership at the chosin reservoir, the first marine division would of been wiped out. He simply wouldn’t be bullied by Generals MacArthur or Almond into making bad decisions that would have left his Marines vulnerable to a Chinese attack which he knew was coming. My opinion, I’m sure there’s more learned opinions out there, but he should be on the list also.
Chesty will win in a popular poll just because he is more well known and his legend is something a recruit even knows about. It’s a tough one for me to choose between Lejeune and Butler.
General Lejeune did far more for the Marines with his leadership in leading the Corp into the modern war fighting unit it is today than winning medals.
No doubt it General Lejune is the greatest Marine General of all time, if it wasn't for him fighting for the Marine Corps to exist they would never exist, Semper Fi.
I knew his Navy corpsman In W W 2 Vincent Sam Grey. Louis you have to get off your feet. Chesty hands down. I read the the story and know That Gen. Puller was the finest Marine of any Devil Dawg!!!
General Butler no doubt with 2 MOH and a Brevet. He beats Dan Daly (Sargant) with 2 MOH and a navy cross while Puller brings in third place with 5 navy crosses. The level of the awards and their number are key determinates in my mind. The Brevet is hair below the MOH if not arguably the same, so, Butler for me.

Chesty of course....no other. Fouled mouth but a fighter.
Gen Lejune is the best hands down due to his far-reaching contributions to the Corps.
I was stationed at Camp LeJeune two times Jan-Jul74 and Sep75-Oct77. Semper Fi
General Lejeune did far more for the Marines with his leadership in leading the Corp into the modern war fighting unit it is today than winning medals.
My vote goes to General Butler. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant

Chesty, “take me to the brig so I can see the real Marines”
Maj. Gen. Oliver P. Smith commanded at Chosin .
Call. Terence Ryan reporting as ordered. I got promoted...saved again.
oorah
Smedly wasn't the greatest marine he was the greatest person. He fought wars, watched men die, and told the entire world to knock it off.
Marine Generals are badasses. I was in the army and it's sickening how General "woke" Milley destroyed the army with his CRT and white guilt programs.
VOTE VETS DONT LIKE YOUR MAN , WHO CLAIMED THAT THE WW2 VETERANS WERE SUCKERS , TAKE YOUR DRAFT DODGER AND LEAVE.
