It blows my mind to think what kind of man almost pulls down a third Medal of Honor. And Butler had a Marine Brevet Medal, which would have been a Medal of Honor had they been awarding them to officers at that point. So the two guys who had two Medals of Honor should have both had three each. That is just nuts. (You should do a story about George Oldroyd, who's the most-decorated Scout lifesaver in history. He's the only one in B.S.A. history to receive the Honor Medal twice since it was constituted in 1923, and the only one to receive the top valor award from Scouts in two different countries. He received one of his Honor Medals with Crossed Palms from the B.S.A. National Court of Honor, and the Bronze Cross for Gallantry from the B-P Pathfinder Movement in the U.K. He was going to go to West Point until he broke his neck in a car wreck, so you can just imagine the kind of soldier he might have become.)
Now and then I've used the phrase "a soldier's soldier" to indicate a superior military person of whom men in uniform would follow into battle without question, such as General Patton. However, this phrase falls short in describing Sgt. Daly: he was well above that level. Great episode within in a great concept ("Marking History"). Love all of these shorts because I learn much.
I think he regretted fighting to defend US corporate interests. He was not fighting for his country but for the United Fruit Corporation etc. See the Book, "War is a Racket" bu Smedley Butler. the movie "Amsterdam" is loosely based on him. He hated what he did.
@@billspeer1213 Just speculation that a rational human being would love putting his life on the line to defend corporate interest for nothing in return except for a medal. Butler had the courage to put it into writing. Some who were in Haiti refused to talk about what they did there in suppressing democracy there. the Marines were a huge part of it even during WWII. Shame on the USA. A totally racist and morally corrupt policy that was employed in Haiti. No where did Daly fight except in WWI did he defend America.
The USA handled colonialism differently then. After the Boxer rebellion the European powers demanded an indemnity. As did the US. But the treaty terms guaranteed the USA and OVERPAYMENT. THE USA, alone among the western countries: After the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, the United States remitted about half of its share of the Boxer Indemnity to the Chinese government in 1908. The US was the first country to do so, and as a condition, the funds were to be used to establish schools in China and send Chinese students to universities in the United States. The Qing imperial court used the funds to create the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program, which sent students to universities in the US, including MIT. The program also established a Chinese Educational Mission office in Washington, DC, and focused students on science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and commerce.
Great video. GOD bless us all.
This video should be shown to every Marine recruit at Parris Island or San Diego! It is truly inspirational!
Thanks for your kind words.
@@MarkingHistoryChannel Really? Except for WWI they were corporate pawns. Where in China or Haiti or Central America was the USA threatened?
Great American Hero.
RIP, Oorah and Semper Fi.
Looks like you support suppressing democracy and self-determination for US corporate interests.
The fact he told em I'd rather be the best sergeant in the history of the Corps.,than just another officer, says it all!
Sergeant Major Daniel Daly, thank you for your service & sacrifice. From one veteran to another, Thanks Bro.
Another good vid, Bruce! Quite a character Dan Daly was 😊. And I learned more about the Boxer Rebellion.

A man among men !!!
If anyone could have received a third MOH, it should have been Marine Sgt Dan Daily. R.I.P. Semper Fi.
Semper Fi
Teuful Hunden Dan Daily!
ACTUALLY THE TRANSLATION TO ENGLISH WAS COVERED IN THE STORY!
Teufel (Toy-fel) = Devil; Hund = Dog (Hound) and Hunden be Dogs
This is the only way to use the word hero . Not just any service person .
Increadible
Smendley what a name.
Even better his middle name was Darlington. Smedley Darlington Butler.
Come here from Netflix movie, what a great and heroic story,im not even american btw
Great videos but when can we expect a new one to be posted?
Working on a short documentary on Jimmy Stewart B-24 WW2 bomber pilot. It will be a fascinating story. Thanks for your interest. 👍
Coming soon.
you failed to mention his time in Mexico. A possible 4th medal of honor?
Thanks for noticing. I left out his time in Mexico to keep the video short. I left out a lot of story to keep it short.

Daly is not Butler you have no evidence of this.

Ah, research!@@theraplawyer
DALY ITS a cork name. IRISH.
They won two MOHs because it was the only medal.
So in other words he fought for colonialism

We fight for our country and we follow orders. Oh, and we do it better than anyone. If you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything.
