Old "O&K" lift - Tesco. I'm surprised this is still running

- Tesco High Wycombe.
The long term plans for this building, actually let me rephase - it has no long term plans! Tesco is the eyesore in the middle of a new shopping centre. The reason these lifts have never been modernised is due to the uncertainty of the building. A lot of the store needs refurbishing, the ceiling tiles for an example!
These lifts are the original ones installed in the early 80s.
The right lift has never been touched, whilst the left lift has new buttons and COP (car op. panel) to accommodate wheel chair and disabled users - although this was probably done to satisfy new regulations, rather than part of a refurb.
When I was younger, I went up that ladder into the motor room when workmen left it open one day. The machine is painted yellow with a big fan over the top of the motor. As I've said before, this was before camera phones were around, so no photos of it.
I might go back one day and see if I can sneak a photo through the gap in the middle of the motor room doors (they don't shut properly and there is a gap)
I used to work in the store whilst still at school in the evenings which was about 1985 ish , They were a bit of a death trap then . Always remember my mate donuting his BMW in the car park on top summer of 1991 and smashing into one of the walls !! Classic.
Great video love the motor start up noise
Hadn't seen this one! That motor noise, brilliant!
Now That Is An Official Tesco Repair At The Beginning
Theres a couple of old Hammond & Champness lifts at our local hospital that sound just like these lifts.
The stair case is completely enclosed (a concrete stairwell) but there is a door that leads out to each level. I think you can just see it on the left at 0:12, oh maybe not, but that's where the stairwell door is. On the first floor, the stairwell door is directly on the left of the lifts
Woooooow that sounds good!! i wanted to see the machine room xD
Next time I am in town I will video it, but the only difference is the left lift has a lower down COP (car operating panel) for disabled people to use, other than that it is the same. Actually, I videoed it on this trip, but when I went to edit the movie I found there was nothing on the phone! (didn't record it!)
I will try and get that picture through the machine room door, although this will be a little bit dodgy - I will try and wait until the car park isn't busy to do it.
>alarm doesnt work.
Yeah, I got stuck in a hydraulic lift once. This woman come out shaking and said "you don't want to go in there, I just got stuck in it", so of course I had to try it - it couldn't level on the Ground floor and stopped. Alarm button didn't work, but after 1 minute it ascended to 1st floor and doors opened. I spoke to security and they said "yeah, that alarm button hasn't been working for ages" (how about getting it fixed then!!)
Your English is perfect. There are not many O&K lifts here, the only ones that I have seen are in Tesco stores.
(someone else said what you said - O&K escalators, but not lifts)
That's my phone, my wife is wondering where I got to!
G & 1 are store levels & 1, 2 & 3 are parking levels
Yep, will try and do it soon.
There at Rotherham General Hospital. I`m going to try & film them sometime this week or maybe next week, but i`d better be quick because they`re going to be replaced very soon despite working without any major faults since 1978
ok.
"I" am only interested in older stuff, lets say when light bulbs were still lighting up the floor indicator panel, before LEDs.
New motor-room less lifts, anything after 1995, well, I'm not particularly interested, but that's not to say that other people won't want to see it.
We have some like this at our old Tesco car park . Mansfield walkden street . Well worth a visit Matt
Hi Paul, would these be them? www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.143788,-1.1998855,3a,75y,331.31h,90.24t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sXvuoRZ3ao0doAGRA3qOj6A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
mrmattandmrchay yes mate certainly are.
@Cazkumali Hi. Probably never. This building has been there since the late 70s and is the eyesore in the middle of a new shopping centre. If you go into the store and look at the ceiling, every ceiling tile is sagging and the whole shop needs a refurb. The thing is, the future of this store may be is uncertain, so they will not spend any money on it. Just my guess! I love the store though!! Matt
@stylethemile but I wouldn't :( Love the old classic lifts. Not too bothered by modern MRL stuff, it all feels and looks the same for me.
@mrmattandmrchay O&K lifts that must be going some years back
omg, 5 months...! sorry for late response :P
Yes, but they are classed as 'travellators' - moving walkways for trolleys. Both are at the back of the store going from G to 1.
Yeah, sounds good! What town are you from (or going to film)?
I quite agree and never said that they weren't
@hannahcross24 Yep. probably both have by now. Wonder if they will get a new padlock for the motor room hatch?
yeah yeah yeah, film them if you can. I have been looking for some Hammound and Champness models for ages.
Are they the ones with the big triangular arrows (light up white) at either end of the floor display, whilst the floor indicators are kind of a 'cube' that light up yellow?
The call buttons used to be square that didn't go in much, but were quite bright when lit. Would be great if you post these before they are gone! Thanks, Matt
Also looking for old Bennie lifts
@Oli92Technik I have another motor room vid coming soon... the hotel that I was in left the lift motor room door unlocked (this was in Milan). Editing now, probably post in the week sometime (It's a good one!)
Would be great to film them, where abouts is this?
@mrmattandmrchay allright, thank you very much! i'll take a look on it :D
@mrmattandmrchay what year were these lifts installed?
@mrmattandmrchay when will the right hand lift get new buttons?
I'm not going to be able to get in there as it's locked (but there is a reasonable gap to take a photo through)
@Oli92Technik You can...search "don't leave your motor room unlocked"
Very similar noise to the old M&S Slough Furse Lift! Do these still exist?
The Furse lifts were twice as loud but I know what you mean ;) Nah, these were replaced in about 2015, but I did get the motor room in the 'afraid of lifts this is why' video.
By the way, "O&K" means 'Orenstein & Koppel' of course! Look them up on wikipedia.
is there esclators in the store
They did made elevators until Kone acquired them in the mid-1980s.
Yes it did
What year was them lifts installed?
Why would you say such a thing, and I haven't been called a "twit" for about 20 years lol
@mrmattandmrchay okay thats pretty cool! Yeah i wanted to see it =D unbelievable that the door is unlocked, thats a little bit dangerous heheh, but thanks for the quick answer
Shouldn't mock the Official-Tesco-Repair :P

To Mrmattandchay is the elevator beside the one that you were filming in this video cleaner or dirtier than the one you were filming in this video.

+Transport Elevation (Elevators Since 2012) Not the same though, already the metal border in the middle of the car is flattened by trolleys ramming against it - that only lasted a year or two! These were modernised I think 3 or 4 years ago now.
