Conspiracy theory: The writers are increasing the length of the script to keep Simon preoccupied. That way, they can -dig the secret tunnel out of the basement- have some more free time to refine their mushroom soup recipe.

Hello everybody! It's me, today's writer! As you may have noticed, the video is a bit longer than usual, and there will be another 2-to-3 hour episode of mine shortly. I would be super happy to get your feedback on these super-deep dives. Is this something you appreciate? Or would you rather have it shortened?
Also (SPOILER!!!) I have a factual correction to make: The bomb in Hanover actually had a killswitch - a fact I only became aware of after the episode had been recorded. I was misled by another incorrect account and didn't realise it in time. I am sorry about that!

Honestly, the Mad Trapper of Rat River and this video are my favorites out of all your videos. There's just something so intriguing and endearing about hearing a case covering an anti-hero who keeps foiling the police or, in the Mad Trapper's case, keeps escaping death (until he didn't). A really important part for me though is that they do not kill anyone. There are a seemingly endless amount of videos on youtube covering serial killers but very little covering cases where no one dies. The videos stand out against the sea of killer cases.

I'm only an hour in, but hearing about his childhood (abuse aside) he sounds like he might be autistic. As a Mother to neurodivergent children, it breaks my heart that he couldn't just be left to sit with those chickens where he was happy and safe, away from the confusion of the "real" world. Yeah, there's a couple of channels that he takes this approach with. Casual Criminalist often is nowhere near this lighthearted, because a lot of the stuff that it covers gets *really* dark. Decoding the Unknown has a similar format but is a skeptical take on various conspiracy theories. Can be fun, but comes at the cost of somewhat poisoning your recommended videos list because TH-cam's algorithm seems to be incapable of telling the difference between conspiracist nutjobs and people who are debunking, lampooning, or just providing education about the reality that said nutjobs distort.

I'm not a doctor so I can't go throwing diagnoses around but I AM neuro-divergent and Arno very much seems to have a lot of the same traits. His childhood behavior- retreating from reality and his laser-like focus on the few things that stimulated him- are very much behaviors that kids with autism, adhd and other neurological differences can exhibit. The impulsive behavior as an adult, as well. The description of the energy, rush and happiness he felt once he started making his first plan sounds exactly like how it feels to fall into hyper-fixation; at least from my own experience.

I liked this episode. I would like to add my own experience with depression (of which I do take medicine for)
Sometimes, I have moments of impulsivity in a desperate attempt to feel better. For me, this usually means using Uber Eats to order overpriced junk. Usually, I immediately am filled with an instant sensation of guilt and shame.
I say this as an explanation of how Arno could meticulously plan a bombing in a diminished mental capacity while also feeling guilt.

I know this is from some random person on the internet but you may find it interesting.
I used to binge and have the same feelings afterward. When I first started working on my eating disorder, ED, I would vigorously exercise for 10 minutes after a binge. It's very important to point out that exercise was NOT a part of my ED. The exercise raised endorphins, burned some of those calories, and made me accountable for my actions. It worked for me because I'm lazy and I hated that intense workout.
TLDR: my laziness helped me stop binge eating

At first, I was disappointed when Simon refused to read the gory details. But now I'm grateful for it. Simon, his writers, and his editors actually seem to have helped me with reframing some traumas that have resisted therapy.
Before the Casual Criminalist, I would spend hours every day for weeks going through Wikipedia lists of serial killers, rapists, terrorists, etc, until the nightmares got so bad that I'd have trouble sleeping (the fixation side of ADHD can be a real bitch sometimes). I experienced CSA and I suspect that some of my fixation was a case of "Get over yourself, look how much worse it was for these other people. See, THIS person fought back, why didn't YOU? This person suffered for DAYS, you only had a few uncomfortable minutes". As though trauma has an objective scale and you must score high enough to have "legitimate" PTSD, and anything less is just weakness. I have a degree in Psychology and I've been to therapies, yet I couldn't be understanding towards myself. And because I was reading these accounts by myself and with only my own interpretation, things could more easily get out of hand and start me on a nightmare doom spiral, which would prompt me to stop reading the biographies until the nightmares went away. But once gone, I'd start feeling that urge again to revisit those biographies and find new ways to be cruel towards those memories of when I was a scared child.
It's been a long time now since I last became fixated to the point of nightmares. I no longer feel that strong urge to look up the details of the abuse suffered by victims when Simon refuses to read them. I think this is because each story is being processed by at least three other people before it gets to me, and each person is processing them without any judgement towards me and instead usually places the majority of the negative judgement on the people who are actually responsible for the crimes. The writer takes the information they have gathered and is the first person to process the events into a script, and typically spends the most time in that state of information processing. Sometimes during that processing, they might experience some of their own difficulties on how to process the information, they may think a detail is an important CSI when it's actually more Saw, but generally they do a really good job of honoring the victims. Simon is the second person to process the information, and given the cold read format, it's essentially in real time. His reactions have often helped me remodel my maladaptive response of comparing myself to the victims into the adaptive response of recognizing the victims as people who had/have their own agencies that are utterly separate from my identities and are deserving of my compassion, but not my comparison. The third person to process the events is the editor. Their choice of music and use of silence have been especially good cues for when I need to pay attention to particular emotions or be mindful of someone else's experience (whether it's a victim, an investigator, Simon, or the editor).
I know that people can develop new traumas from reading, listening, or observing traumatic events experienced by other people. But it never occurred to me that a person could experience a sort of observer-mediated therapy with repeated exposure to a nonthreatening modeler of appropriate emotional responses to traumatic events. Makes me wonder if this is a reproduceable effect?

      @frankiemillcarek6976 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

Really appreciate your thoughts here. I go through bouts of true crime/spooky fixation (usually when left home alone of course) and only stop when I inevitably get nightmares. It is not the healthiest way to operate so I have always appreciated Simon's team refocusing on victims for me *and* pointing out that despite my interest I don't NEED to know the gory details.

@@frankiemillcarek6976 Yeah, my fixations would get worse when my partner and I were physically separated for work or school, and also during periods of deep, unmedicated depression. While I still get fixated (my ADHD is intentionally unmedicated, but I manage it with behavioral strategies), I happily have not sought out the lists of serial killers on Wikipedia in a long time.

EMDR is an actual therapeutic tool for helping with trauma, so it makes sense that something like this could also work for it, too.
Using an outside source to help you re-regulate your emotional response to a more normative level, by watching someone else model a more usual pattern of reactions.
(no formal psych training or knowledge, but my autistic ass did have to aftermarket kludge together a social module, and then I got into a pilot program for getting us shrinks to help with the transition into high school, and adult society, which is how I escaped getting any noticable amounts of late chidhood to adulthood trauma)l

Dennis... Simon... This was by far my favorite episode of the Casual Criminalist to date. Not only did I not mind the duration, were it shorter, I feel I might have been left feeling unfulfilled. As a veteran of Whistle-Boy's content, I can proudly say that I have been here since the very first CC episode (in fact, I recall prior to the channels nexus, Simon suggesting he might do such a project...Business Blaze?). I 100% agree that you, Dennis, could and likely should actually turn this into a book. I would gladly read it. On the topic of your regular reliance on gore and horror, which I do admittedly love, this episode left me with a feeling of positivity and lightheartedness that is a very welcome change from the usual shock and awe I'm left with from other more brutal episodes.

While i feel absolutely terrible he had to suffer through it, it warms my heart and makes me feel a little more understood. Migraine sufferers hear, “its just a bad headache” and other dismissive and ignorant comments about the absolute pure hell we go through while dealing with a migraine attack. @Denizdix great episode! To me, the stories take however long they take to tell well. I started playing the Casual Criminalist episodes when I was working and had commutes between clients that the episodes fit wonderfully. I no longer work but listen to or watch every episode! (I think I'm subscribed to all of Simon's channels! ) This episode, I viewed over three days/nights. Thank you for your excellent writing and thank you to Simon!

As somebody who was "forced" to repeat a school year (partially because my teacher hated me as i know now) i can clearly say it creates more problems than it solves. Specially in lower education years the difference is so big that i only got top results in my second year while actually being incredibly more lazy than before. In some way this was the year i learned how to beat school with very little efford and i never had problems again. Nowadays i understand that i learned the worst things back then and that all i really would have needed is adults to invest some actual time into me.

I absolutely loved this episode. Firstly it is thoroughly enjoyable to see Simon enjoy himself so much - in fact I skipped the Watts Episode because I didn't want to see the pain on his face once he realized what this devil had done. Secondly I really enjoy these long episodes. Thank you Deniz, Jen & Simon for this fun autumn afternoon - can't wait for the next heist episode! Cheers from Cologne, Germany - I'm now off to the next Karstadt 😉

I love how Simon's attempt to empathize with the subject's harsh upbringing was to say, "One of my homes in the countryside only has well water that I have to push a button to pump." 😂😂😂

As a german born in the early 80s i can recall this case was as big as it gets. Growing up i took some deep dives into this case by myself over the years.
This one was incrediblely well researched and the quality of writing was extraordinary.
By highlighting different perspectives and especially going into possible reasons/intentions behind his decision making this coverage felt way more complete than many others out there icluding german media. I really enjoyed every second of it.
much love to everyone who reads this may your day be a good one

Mad props to Deniz for only documenting his interview with Arno via notes AFTER the interview. That is really hard!

That was 3½ hours?! The writing, delivery and editing made it feel like 30 minutes. Superb job done by all! 🎉
Can we please have more book-length episodes? Pretty please? With whipped cream and a cherry on top? 🍒

An absolutely immaculate episode. Deniz, thank you for going above and beyond with your research and writing. Was an absolute joy to listen to and a nice change getting a long non death related crime story. I imagine this was also a great relief for Simon. I do hope we can get more of these in the future 😊

I loved this episode SO MUCH. I love long episodes, I never listen to them all in one sitting but I enjoy them broken up into several pieces over a week. I love the story of Arno Funke, as a German he is a well known legend to me. I genuinely like the dude and I'm so glad he found happiness.

Absolutely one of my favourite CC episodes! For both the subject choice and the writing ❤
Shout out to Deniz for the mental health mention! I’ve been thinking for a while I need to increase my anti-depressants, but my broken brain says “you’re wasting the doctors time”, this gave me the push I needed. Waiting for a call back today :) fingers crossed for no anxiety meltdown when the phone rings 😬🙈
Anyone else out there that suffers with this incredibly unpleasant disease (yeah despite being a native English speaker, my creative flair in language sucks, nothing on our Deniz), shout out to you guys. This thing can feel so isolating, but there’s millions of us out here, right by your side 😊
