2:00:50 Yeah, this is a random fun fact I like to tell people. Cannibalism is entirely legal, it's just ordinarily nigh impossible to obtain the flesh to engage in cannibalism without breaking another law (murder, desecration, etc) Related fun fact, there was a guy who had his foot amputated, I can't recall why, and he was able to be given it to take home. He cooked it and served it to a few friends (who were fully aware and informed about the meats origins, as deceiving someone about that could also be a crime). Iirc a state prosecutor was morally outraged and tried to find a way to prosecute him for a crime. However after much ado about nothing, he realised his hands were tied and there was no crime he could even plausibly be charged with. This is also a contributing factor in why it's usually very difficult to be given removed organs or amputated limbs. Not the primary reason as that's usually related to the organ/limb being dangerous due to the reason it's no longer attached to you, so it needs to be appropriately disposed of as biomedical waste, but it's definitely not NOT a factor.
Back in the 90's, I read about a case in Japan where two miners were trapped after a cave-in for only 30 hours. When the rescuers got to them, it was discovered that only one was alive, the other had, in the total darkness, freaked out and lost track of time, and thinking he had been there for days, had started eating his dead companion. This is a big no-no in Japanese culture, and the family of The Devoured One pressed charges. The surviving miner was shamed and lost his job. A Psych evaluation was ordered, and I think the survivor was declared mentally unstable. A very weird story.

When you were talking about how much things change in 17 years it hit me because I had a kinda similar experience. In 2006 at 23 years old I got very sick. I spent the next 10 years barely getting out of bed and several more years not getting out much. I watched TV during those years and some friends and family came over to see me so I wasn't completely disconnected but once I started getting back out it was the little things that changed. One weird thing was I was at a concert and all the sudden almost everyone took out their phones to wave the flashlight around. Another is how much dating has changed. So much is now online (which I'm terrible at) vs in person (I am pretty decent at that lol). Going through what I did I can only imagine being completely cut off from changes especially in a time like that where things changed so much. In the last 20 years our world has changed a lot, in some ways maybe more than any time in history, but maybe not in such a visible way. Our changes are more in the access to information. It is crazy to think up until the mid 1800s someone coming back to society after 20 years probably wouldn't have noticed all that much change. Since then things have moved so fast. Cars, airplanes, radio to TV, communications, space travel, and so much more!
Hells yeah... let's go! Yo, this episode was on point! I attended the Univ of Colorado in the 90's and had the opportunity to see the play... Which was f*ing hilarious! As a student I also frequented the Alfred Packard grill to grab a bite to eat between classes.

as a Colorado native and a CU alumni, this story is legendary!! I even have an Alfred packer magnet on my fridge! However, I had no idea about all the post eating legal nonsense that happened after the fact. Mostly you hear about him wondering into the camp with his crazed look and the bodies being found and that still to this day no one knows for sure if he ate them out of desperation or not. There are of course lots of ghost stories about not only himself still wondering around but also his victims still seeking justice.

'Friend jerky', somehow the funniest way to think about cannibalism
Former Colorado resident here: Nice job pronouncing Ouray correctly!! Or maybe helping Simon pronounce Ouray correctly.
Amazing video as always Simon.
I just re-watched Cannibal: The Musical this past weekend. GLORIOUS. 😅
Please, everyone watch this no-budget film. It's the best worst movie ever
I attended a theatrical performance back in 1999(?) and loved every minute.
Let's build a snowman!
Hells yeah... let's go! Yo, this episode was on point! I attended the Univ of Colorado in the 90's and had the opportunity to see the play... Which was f*ing hilarious! As a student I also frequented the Alfred Packard grill to grab a bite to eat between classes.
This is one of those that’s gonna do NUMBERS, Simon
I’ve been watching old episodes for months now and the brightness of the studio (Simon doesn’t look like a levitating head anymore) and paper scripts coming back is a bit funny.
THANK YOU FOR THIS XMAS GIFT!
I like how Simon asks chatgpt a long rambling question, then gets impatient when it starts a conversational answer.
2 hours on Alferd Packer?! Let's goooo ❤
Hell yes back to proper length vids
This introduction.....
Simon should consider doing books on tape.
Tangents included of course.
I nearly spit out my tea when Simon went " bowchica wowow"😂
Simon dear, we most certainly are not bigger than pigs- for the most part (domestic pigs are like, 300-600 lbs)
Hi David! I have really enjoyed your books, well done! I am sure this script is awesome too.
Thanks!!!
Me: oh no, short episode 😞
Me, looking at the length of the video: YES! I LOVE WTs (Whistleboy Tangents) and I get the feeling there will be a lot!
18:08 As a native Coloradan I want to commend you on your pronunciation of “ouray”. I’ve heard it pronounced many ways (Ow-ray, oo-ray, etc.) and I appreciate that you pronounced it correctly!
Merry Christmas Simon and writers ❤❤❤❤
Happy Christmas Eve everyone have a great Christmas and a happy New year 🎊
Thank you ❤ Merry Christmas to you and.your family
The most detailed rendition of Packard I've seen.
Why, thank you.
David is the real MVP 🎉
:)
Love Simon’s pink and green shaker cup! ❤Fits perfectly with today’s topic. 😂
It goes without saying: "The past was terrible". Another bad guy got away, but at least they made him spend some time in prison.
There’s a picnic area in hinsdale county called cannibal top. There’s a few picnic tables and a plaque with the names of the victims that were found on the spot.
I camped in Hill City once to visit all the local museums and courthouse, it was really cool.
It took almost 2 hours for you to shout out Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Cannibal! The Musical, but I’m so glad you did! That’s how I learned about Packer initially but you definitely filled in some of the gaps, especially with all of the trials and appeals. Seriously, watch this gem of a movie, it’s campy and catchy, and is a fantastic view of the guys, pre-South Park.
Shpadoinkle!
What a surprise the thing that fits in dismembered appendices got put in dismembered appendices. Also how could have Simon mentioned judging by his reaction Simon didn't know this play existed in the first place
Current leather shoes are not entirely leather, lots of glue and leather bound to fabric. Also, leather isn't Tanned anymore, it's made leather via chemicals now. So, don't eat your leather shoes.
Alfred is buried in my home town. About two miles from where I live. Every day I drive his grave. I politely say hello to him. Just in case he returns as a zombie.
If you ever need a snack...
I live in FoCo and am frankly jealous that our cemetery has no famous cannibals
Merry Christmas! Hopefully the writers get to see sunshine this Christmas day!
😂 That eyebrow raise at 21:20, obviously reading the pronunciation guide for Saguache... later followed by several mispronunciations of the word.
When Alfred said 'I'm feeling a bit peckish...' they should have run.
The sky is blue, and all the leaves are green…
The sun's as warm as a baked potato!
I think I know precisely what I mean
@@loc978 when I say it’s a shpadoinkle dayyyyy
I wonder if they got a christmas tree in the basement... Jingly bells on the locks. Garland on the chains... Sing for your supper, writers! Lovely work though!
as a Colorado native and a CU alumni, this story is legendary!!
If only Leanne hadnt run off, Packer would have had a clear mind. Damn horse 😂😂
