    What would you rate your recent budget on a scale of 1-10? 👀

      5/10 for my budget recently. I spend way too much on going out to eat.

      100!
      I'm not budgeting anything. My father used to keep a journal for expenditures. Every evening, he was busy creating new records, calculating, and analyzing.
      I remember I asked him once, "OK, this is the journal for expenditures, do you have another one for incomes?"
      "I do not need a journal for income! I have a single record for income: monthly salary!".
      "Oooooh", I said, "I think that's the problem! I think it should be the other way around, you should have a journal for incomes and a single record for expenditures. You are doing it all wrong!".

    Isn't it so stressful to budget in such a detailed and categorized way? I do it reversely where I take my net income, subtract my fixed expenses, then savings/investments, and then have an amount left per month (or week) -- I can use that on whatever I want to/need to.
    just think categorizing and tracking every line item is obsessive and tedious. This way is more flexible. So if you have, for example, $200/week to spend, then that's what you have to spend. Doesn't matter if it was personal care, or an uber, or a sweater. If I wanted to see all $200 on jeans that week and not eat, then I can do that, you know what I mean? I think it's easier to decide and proritise what to spend it on

      I write down every. single. thing. It's def tedious but not bad if I don't every day (anything over two days makes it harder). For me, it's extremely valuable because it keeps me accountable. When I'm like, oh my groceries are reasonable then I look back and see stuff that I could have pulled back on, it helps. I definitely have a bias towards my perception of my spending that my numbers keep me honest on. And now that I've been doing it for a few years, it VERY interesting to look at how much costs of things (like food) have shifted. Plus, with all that data entry done, I keep changing my Excel sheets and want to use tableau to learn so I've got data to work with. Tedious, yes; valuable, yes. I get why you wouldn't want to drill down that much but I've had crazy money issues (not with spending, with earning) so now having a consistent salary and time (ex freelancer) it's actually fun and I feel like I learn a lot.

    Hi Steph and Den! Loved the video LOL! I downloaded your budget sheet but noticed there wasn't a section to track every day spending like you did in this video. Is it another template?

  • @becky1633

    Nice video Steph + Den! I am a few years older than you and I think that you'll look back on these budgets in the future with a little more kindness towards yourselves. Saving $1000 / month (or more) is extremely impressive for anyone, but especially for young entrepreneurs in a HCOL area like Toronto!
    Some of your personal spending costs seem very reasonable. Buying a book for $20ish is a great way to support fellow creative people (the author, editor, illustrators, and folks in the publishing industry). Plus you get hours of entertainment from reading the book, and a lower-cost social event with friends in your book club. Seems worth it to me!
    Keep up the good work and try not to stress too much over those small charges, especially the ones that add value to your life.

    $50 for shellac is pretty good actually. If you're removing shellac, it generally costs $10 but then if you are getting a manicure or pedicure after, then you have to pay for that service. It might seem expensive but the people doing it need to get paid so understandable. The Uber cost is a very minimal cost compared to the other expenses listed in the budget.
    In my opinion, I do think that life is to be lived. So if you are still hitting your savings goals, it's okay spending a little over budget once in a while, especially if this isn't a constant thing you're doing.

    • @stephandden
      @stephandden  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was $50 for the removal only! I didn't get anything done again afterwards 👀
      Thanks for watching + for your comment 😊

      @@stephandden Oh wow! Nevermind. That's expensive lol

    • @TheGoodLifeStarterPack
      @TheGoodLifeStarterPack ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's extremely good ($50 shellac actually). It's typically $55 here in Atlanta + $35 for a pedicure, not including tip. And that's every 2 - 3 weeks. Being a woman is much more expensive than a man (feminine products, hair products, nails, makeup, clothes, waxing, etc.).

    Stumbled upon your channel and love that you're Canadians!! I'm pretty good at tracking each of my transactions, but i was wondering how do you record when you get an etransfer from friends? For example you paid for the $100 meal and they transferred you their $50 portion? I guess a similar example is when Steph paid for the groceries, but Den pays for half of it. Curious on how you track that. Does making it a "negative" transaction in your regular expenses category work? New follower and looking forward to your 2024 content!!

    • @stephandden
      @stephandden  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Jessica! So glad that you're here 😊
      Good question - I (Steph) usually divide the original expense in half, in anticipation of being paid back. So for example, we pay for groceries using my credit card, but I'll only input half of the cost into my budget tracker. I find that works best for me!

    I'll rate you a 7. For the books, I'd suggest to use the library and buy a book when you can't find it there. Definitely can find ways to cut in those certain areas, like Den said.

    My question is how did you get an Ubers for ~$10?
    I have to spend ~$30 USD minimum/before tip for a 20 ride in my area (major metro in TX)
    P.S.: Thank you for your great content!

    • @stephandden
      @stephandden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much 😊
      And wow, that's an expensive spot - the lower cost Ubers are for short-ish rides during non-peak traffic hours in Toronto - sometimes they can be WAY more than that!

    I feel I need to keep track of my budget every week. I spent all of my budget for eating out in 1 week. If i didn't check check in I would have went way over for the month. But I'm relatively new to budgeting so that just might due to my own personal inexperience.

    • @stephandden
      @stephandden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point - checking in helps you stay on track, and also not stress and feel guilty all month.
      Glad that you’re learning over time! 😊

    Uber Eats is a killer to any budget. Drop that down to like one a month and you'll be fine. Also, I got a kindle last year as a xmas gift and it saved me a ton. E-Books are cheaper than paperback. I say 7 on 10 as you were pretty close if not bang on with the other categories.

    • @stephandden
      @stephandden  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm still attached to paperback books, but I feel like I'm getting closer to buying a kindle! It definitely sounds easy / less expensive 😊
