I love this old house and segments like this make it even better. The skill that he possesses and the calmness that he does that skill with is wonderful. And it's always great to see Tom even if he's just assisting!

Quick question. I've seen several people make boxes this way where they attach the top to the lid by gluing it. Wouldn't this make a cross grain glue joint? Is the top small enough that there wouldn't be enough wood movement to cause an issue? I'll have to try that finishing technique.

I had a narrower width of plain-sawn red oak split in a similar situation, so I'd say it's risky, but I'm interested to hear what others say.

Matthew Ziegler I've made dozens of boxes this way with all sorts of different types of woods and never had an issue gluing the tops on.

Jarod Myrick thanks for sharing your experience. It seems to go against conventional wisdom, but it's worth a try. There seem to be a lot of people doing it that way. It yields a great looking result.

I'm wondering how he kept that PU glue from staining his fingers/hands? When I heard "the plan" I "assumed" he was going to use latex gloves during the "rub in" part to keep his hands clean, but was then surprised to see him just pick up the gauze and rub it in "bare-handed", and also hold the piece stationary with the other hand. PU glue is notorious for being impossible to remove from bare skin, and generally one has to "wear it off" once you "accidentally" touch it during the glue-up process. Fortunately it's not as allergenic (for most people) as uncured epoxy resin!

I don’t like how Tommy was so against him using the glue at first and didn’t seem like he wanted to hear about it. Seemed very off putting, to me at least.

You're too sensitive. Any old craftsman, when he sees something he knows used in a way he doesn't know, is suspicious. I was also suspicious about what's going to happen to the bubbles - polyurethane glue foams like mad while curing, and bubbles in the finish are any painter's nightmare - there's no way to remove them other than complete sanding and restarting from scratch. The frequent wiping during the first 45 minutes of curing are the secret, but you can't guess it before you see it. And it also explains why the finish has to happen before cutting and glue-up.

Well maybe they could say the box is for keeping weed in it and have a rapper trying to make the box. Is that better?
