Why is brood sometimes capped?

  • Why is honeybee brood sometimes capped and sometimes not capped? Brood moves through developmental stages: egg, larvae, pupae, adult. Eggs and larvae are in open cells so that worker bees can feed the larvae, and pupae are in closed cells because they are finished eating until they mature into adult bees.
