    We started sleeping on these Japanese style beds, years ago in NY. Our apartment was small and had no actual bedroom. Now hubby and I live in a place three times as big, and still enjoy the floor sleeping experience.

    I used to tell myself that life is too short and so making one's bed is not worth one's time. However, this man makes up a beautiful and practical bed (takes up no space during the day) in less than five minutes. There is no excuse.

      I am a beginner Japanese learner so if someone wants to correct me please feel free. :) But here is my best guess at what he said:
      「いやどうも。ありがとうございました。」
      「ありがとうございました。」(Here the guest said thank you very much while the hotel man said something I couldn't hear.)
      「おゆくりどうぞ。おやすみなさい。」
      Somewhere more literal translation: "Yeah, if you please. Thank you very much (past tense).
      My pleasure/if you please. A very good night to you."
      Basically he could have been saying, "Okay, there you go! Thank you so much for allowing me to serve you. It's my pleasure. Have a great night's sleep." A very very polite and hospitable way for a hotel staff to speak. :)

    My future bed setup :) Moving in a while and planning on getting two 200x80cm tatami mats and futon, regular beds are fine but I sleep better on more firm surface and its better for your back. Later I think I'll maybe get nice wooden frame where to put the tatami mats to make low platform bed.

    • @ifyouloveChristyouwillobeyhim
      @ifyouloveChristyouwillobeyhim 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Apollo440 I didn't "hear" it, I've just always found that the harder a surface is, the more sore I am after sleeping on it. Furthermore the older you get, the harder it is to sleep on hard surfaces. For the truly elderly it is brutal.
      So could you get a little more specific than, "Like everywhere?"
      Thanks! :)

    • @Apollo440
      @Apollo440 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ifyouloveChristyouwillobeyhim it is actually common knowledge. Therefore I wondered where specifically you have read or heard that soft sleeping surfaces are of any good for your back. Eating veggies is also harsh on some people, but that isn't proof that veggies are bad. Yet you say about the reaction of older people to hard surfaces as though everything that isn't "brutal" for them was the measure of its healthiness.
      I am not saying that doctors are the pinnacle of health knowledge - but I know people who had their doctors recommend sleeping on a hard surface for back problems. And I have never heard of soft beds being good for anything. I bet you can find information about sleeping in books and on the internet.
      I was just wondering whether you have some information on what you claim, because people usually stick to what they know and tend to ask others for their sources of information, although they don't have the slightest idea where their own beliefs came from.

      I am not Japanese, and I don't really know. However, to my understanding the "mattress" or first piece he laid directly on the floor is called "shikibuton" and the "think blanket or cover" that he put on after the pillow is called "kakefuton". Also the word "futon" is a more general word that encompasses both. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong, onegaishimasu!) I hope that helps a little. :)

      to show great respect and underscore their own low status in comparison. Similarly to how people kneel to emperors and the like.
      At a high-end ryokans guests are basically treated as pretty much royalty. In addition to bows and such, special super-polite forms of speech are used as well.

      This is a blanket, not a duvet. You cover yourself to keep warm and that top part typically contacts with your face, so looks like an extra hygiene precaution. Esp. since there's no "right side" marked on it, so today you might be facing what your feet touched yesterday?
      I have no idea what this is called, though to confirm and as such cannot really verify this theory.

      In a way yes. Sine I paid for the hotel root for that night, that turns me into a very honored guest. In Japanese culture the guest is considered superior to staff, so you get all sorts of bows and respect. The more traditional the place is the more of that you see. They also use a different sort of speech forms when talking to you belittling themselves and praising you (very annoying to learn).
      There's also a special way to talk "from the high horse" to servants, but I think nowadays it's considered impolite ;)

      OHHH that makes sense now. I knew about that sort of thing but it didn't occur to me that you where in a hotel room. And I also know what your talking about with the different language. Based on what I have seen, almost every language except English has different ways to say words when it is "proper" to someone who is important. Now do they do that every night then? Do you just call them and they setup the "bed"?

      Ah, I though Ryokan made it clear. Ryokan is a type of a traditional Japanese hotel. They do make up a bed for you every night (usually they do it while you are away having a dinner) and move it out of the way in the mornings (while you are having a breakfast), but you get to see it if you decided to have food in your room.
      It's important to have the bed removed during the day since it takes so much space in the room (and space is at a premium obviously, in the video it is an unusually large room actually).
      As for the English not having proper way of addressing your superiors this is not entirely true. You just use more formal expressions and titles, though it's not as extreme as in some other languages (like the Japanese), but you still don't talk in the "yo dawg" style to the Queen and probably not even to your boss ;) Examples include stuff like "I want"->"I'd like to", "Do "->"Can you"->"Could you please"->"Would you be so kind to"->...

      Well if you think about it, a job as a waiter or cashier or cleaning lady or teller or receptionist is called "guest services" even in English-speaking countries. Most people in most jobs these days are performing a "service" in a sense. I think a lot of people forget that they are in fact servants, which leads them to take their jobs less seriously and show less respect.
