Living on a 4 Season Houseboat - Beautiful Floating Tiny House!

  • In this video, we meet Bonnie from Wakefield, Québec, Canada who is living on a gorgeous tiny house boat that is full of character and charm. The River Den (or La Tannière) has custom-made asymmetrical windows, a classic ship's wheel, antique fireplace, and hand-built furniture - all of which give the boat a warm and cozy feel that makes you feel at home as soon as you step on board. The boat is docked on the shore of the Gatineau River and Bonnie lives in it as often as she can when she's not renting it out on Airbnb (www.airbnb.ca/....
The tiny houseboat was designed by Bonnie and her boatbuilding friend, Denis Tremblay, who is known locally as the Wakefield Pirate. Denis and a few of his friends built the boat by hand, including the aluminum frame and the custom windows, the cabinets, and the grill floor in the loft.
The boat is built on 5 pontoons that are designed to provide flotation while still taking on some water to keep the boat weighed down in the water for stability. The pontoons are also designed to freeze in the ice and are made by a local company called Les Quais Navigables (www.quaisnaviga...).
It's a 4-season house boat that is fully insulated and has an antique wood burning fireplace to provide heat in winter. For power, they installed a deep cycle marine battery that provides 12-Volt power for the lights, bilge pump, and navigation lights. They have a Separett composting toilet from Sweden (www.separett-u...), and a sink that pumps water from the river for washing dishes. For refrigeration, Bonnie uses a cooler with ice, but she might invest in some solar panels so that she can power a proper fridge eventually.
The main floor has a kitchen, toilet, dining room and living room, and upstairs there is cozy a sleeping loft with a grill floor that allows heat to rise through the floor, and sun & dust to travel down to the main level. One of the windows in the loft opens up onto a gorgeous rooftop patio with a cedar deck and has space for some solar panels if/when Bonnie decides she needs them.
The boat has a gas motor and can be taken out on the river which is quite impressive considering it's size! To make sure the boat was still road worthy, they built a wedge roof over the loft that can be taken apart if Bonnie wants to transport it to a different location. The boat is currently docked in the quaint little town of Wakefield, Québec where there are cute cafes, restaurants and shops right across the street.
If anyone is interested in renting this house boat, check it out on the Airbnb website here:
    www.airbnb.ca/...
    Thanks for watching!

The grill floor is by far one of the best features I have seen in tiny houses so far : it's lighter than wood, lets dust fall, allows heat and air to circulate and it's way better and healthier for the mattress (no moisture accumulated, less germs and odors...). I wonder why it is not more common in tiny houses !
That said, lovely boat and owner and great video ! :)

+Patriot Jefferson That grated floor was more than strong enough to support her.
I really doubt a professional builder, would use materials for a floor. That couldn't support the weight of someone standing on it.
Plus she rents that boat out. Do you think she tells people? "Don't step on the grated bedroom floor. It's just for show. Only step on the support beams."
Someone would be a fool, to creat such a liability.

    • @earthwizz
      @earthwizz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Look again. Her first foot was on a beam but the angle of her leg suggests her out of sight second foot was on the mesh. Depending on how it's fixed it could easily support a person over that span. You're right it's brilliantly practical, but you might like to calm down on the insults.

Loved every part of your boat tiny house and am jealous. I wish I could go back in time and do that instead of apartment living when I got on my own and was working as a nurse. What fun.
Your filming and editing were just fine, too. Loved the quiet background music. Have a great rest of your life. Be safe and stay close to God on that narrow path. Believe me when I say this and also if you get married, don't marry unequally yoked like I did. Especially after the kids are grown is when you have to start paying attention to each other again and if you've drifted apart, it's really hard if you were not equally yoked in the first place.

The sailboat industry has a thing called a 'cooling plate' for refrigeration purposes. I suggest a top loading to keep the cold air inside the box. They are nice size and the plate uses a small amount of energy. There is also a solid state battery charger that creates more energy than it uses producing a charge into a battery or battery bank to keep them charged. The best setup is two battery banks that can be switched back and forth with the charger working on the bank not being used.

Lavinia, If you sleep 1/3 of your life in a bed and your eyes are closed when sleeping, you don't notice there is a castle surrounding yr bed or a shoe box(as long is you are comfy, not to hot ,not to cold) you will be happy. I prefer this view over any new york penthouse, maybe this gets boring after a while to live their , especially in winter time, but for a holiday I would be very happy being lodged there, I also think she is asking way to much as the build is not so expensive and you lack electricity, a tent on a campingsite with a good shower and toilet and a few neighbours to talk to would cost you a lot less.maybe to cold at night unless you have excellent sleeping bag

I hang off the edge of a twin sized bed when it is just me, and it really isn't comfortable with another person. One if the only universal comanalitues that all homes have is a need to supply a good sleeping space, a good bed is one of the few aspects that is pretty much universal.

Shane Mane - She mentioned that as a possibility and other changes, but she got it on impulse (no long forethought and planning). It also lacked refrigeration - she said "for now" (published in 2016). She rents it through air B&B hinting that cash flow is a factor as it is her primary residence. For a person as young as she appears to be, it's amazing that she has been able to create a relatively carefree life. I'm impressed. Eventually she'll probably have the other necessities and can rent it for more $.

If she is by power, you can put a bubbler in the water, basically it’s a fan that brings up water from the bottom that’s warmer , and it keeps the water from freezing around boat.
Also it’s not the worse thing to have a boat freeze in, most think it will crush it etc.. usually not the case, as the ice will usually push up on to shore first...
Last thing ... she’s on a river with a current. If she keeps the ice off her boat, it prob stays ice free all winter.
I would say the worse thing could be is when the ice break up happens... I would be worried about a large chunk of ice smashing the hull. She may have a dock etc protecting her.
Hope some of this helps ~

I lived aboard and cruised a 33' sailboat for 7 years including a 40,000 mile circumnavigation and have always thought about moving aboard a small house boat. I'm through with ocean crossings but living on a houseboat and being able to travel around on rivers and inland waterways sure has a lot of appeal.

Wow...you are living my dream...(huge sigh)...LOVE IT! ... I was seriously on my way to alternative living when my beautiful grand daughters met with misfortune and were going to be separated ... so of course, one does what one has to when family is in danger of losing one another...so I am blessed to have them all safe and sound in my care today...and TOGETHER...I have no regrets, but boy oh boy, I cant help but be a bit envious of your lifestyle...I have not given up on finding ways to fulfill my dream, but need a little more time now to make some adaptations to include three little peanuts! A house boat would definitely be such a blast for them...We might see you on the river...we aren't too far away...(East of Toronto)...Sure wish you many more happy days aboard your "home"...great video!

Wind and solar compliment each other solar doesn't work at night but wind is often 24/7 . You can get a wind/solar charge controller too. On the water wind is good!

    • @redwolfexr
      @redwolfexr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

On her scale a battery charged by solar is a better option. I notice she pre-wired the walls with sockets -- likely for shore power. So she charges her battery when she has shore power as well as anything else. But she doesn't have enough house battery to depend on for a refrigerator when away from her home pier. I doubt she regularly totes out that heavy battery (you can see the wall plug behind it)
Which is why she hasn't sprung for solar. She isn't spending enough time "boondocking."
It would make more sense to add a Reverse Osmosis water system than a solar system -- which would make drinkable water. She has freshwater so just needs a basic RO with a pump.

OK, but she didn't say how much it coast to build or if she has to pay rent for a dock space. Where my dad has his boat in California people pay up to $1,000 a month for a dock space.

What part of California, ...California has quite some expensive areas. But I'm sure it's similar here. I think there is a race between, California, Ontario and BC to see who can be the most expensive place to live

Zoch Buppet My dad has a sail boat in a harbor just north of sanfransico, my uncle also has a bit houseboat not far from there, they are both in the sanfransico bay. When I was a kid it was very cheap to have a boat there but now developers have changed everything.
