In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Alaska's sale to the United States, also known as the Alaska Purchase or Seward's Folly, was the acquisition of the territory of Alaska by the United States from the Russian Empire in 1867.
At the time, Alaska was a remote and sparsely populated region, known primarily for its abundant natural resources such as furs, fish, and timber.
In 1867, Secretary of State William Seward negotiated a treaty with Russian Minister to the United States, Eduard de Stoeckl, to purchase Alaska for $7.2 million, or about two cents per acre.
Today, Alaska is the largest state in the United States and plays an important role in the country's economy and national defence. The Alaska Purchase remains a significant moment in American history and a testament to the foresight of those who recognized the potential of this remote and often overlooked corner of the world

People in Alaska do get some money from the government. But it's not as a benevolence. Alaska is one of the most expensive state to live in. It has snow most of the time and the cities have sometimes almost no mode of transport except airplanes sometimes run by small private companies. And since it's a remote location everything including milk has to be flown in. So the cost of basic things is double or triple or sometimes even more than what anything costs in other cities in USA.
