Memphis city council just approved the transferring of stadium ownership from the city to the university of Memphis! It is now officially the Memphis Tigers ON CAMPUS facility! The money is approved as well and it's renovation cost is up to $270 million. They also got a $50 million donation from Fred Smith and phase 1 begins this year.
Memphis & the state of Tennessee wanted to renovate both the FedExForum (Grizz & Tigers) and the stadium. Money was tight because the state is also helping out with Nashville's new stadium. Enter Fred Smith of FedEx. His foundation kicked in $50M to ensure both projects got the go-ahead. One caveat... the City of Memphis would transfer ownership of the stadium to the University. Plans include modernizing the load-in area to allow for concerts.

It should be stated that the vast majority of college football stadium renovations will reduce their facility's seating capacity, not increase it. Nebraska is shrinking by 10k, FSU's Doak is shrinking by 15%, etc, etc. Why? They're having a tough time getting people to fill seats because the in-person experience is so horrible. The solution: shrink capacity and charge much higher prices to those willing to attend games.

How much do you have pay for a roof on your stadiums in the good ole US of A. Well north of a billion dollars by the sounds of it. As clearly 400-500 million renovation gets you bit of exterior work and premium viewing area and if you are luvky seat upgrades and I thought construction was expensive in Europe.
