  • What do macaroni penguins look like? Where do macaroni penguins live? What do macaroni penguin eggs look like? The facts NEED TO KNOW about macaroni penguins.
In this feature Tom will answer some of the top questions about macaroni penguins!
Did you know that the Macaroni penguin was named by English explorers. In the mid 18th century, flashy young men wore feathers in their hats, they were called "Macaronis". The English explorers thought the yellow crest feathers of this crested penguin species looked just like the flashy young men.
At Living Coasts, one of three zoo sites held by the Wild Planet Trust, we have 76 penguins! 13 of which are Macaroni penguins.

Wow, so adorable! I love all animals & I was sad to see that one of their predators are seals/sea lions. It made me want to learn more about them too. Thank you for this informative video! I hope they all thrive forever. 🥹♥️🙏🏽

Cool and all but why keep them in captivity?

Hi Azarilh, that is a very good question and a very complex one to answer in one comment. Our friends at ZSL have written a great article about this subject that may shed some more light on the question: www.zsl.org/news-and-events/feature/case-zoos-scientists-perspective
For our part, Wild Planet Trust aims to create a safe haven for endangered species and across our two zoo sites we look after many animals that are on the IUCN red list of endangered species, even some that are extinct in the wild. If you would like to know more about we do in and outside of our zoos you can find out more here: www.wildplanettrust.org.uk/wild-conservation/

@@WildPlanetTrust Saving species in spite of the individuals, ignores their individuality.
Why does this need to be a zoo? Sanctuaries can also save species, without all the ethical implications that zoos have. And if we are really concerned about saving wildlife diversity, and would actually be rational and scientific about the approaches, the methods would look nothing like zoos. Zoos are for the benefit of the humans only. Everything else is excuses to try justify them. Using zoos to save species is just as silly as hunters controling the wildlife populations by killing animals.
